「最古の古来種」 (Saiko no Koraishu)
“The Oldest Ancients”

After all the fun of continental adventures we’re right back to island hopping – or as Log Horizon knows it, setting up for the grand finale. Sure, four episodes might be a bit of a stretch for something as simple as a Genius threatening Akihabara (again), but as I think we all know by now, nothing in this series is ever really that simple.

While I’ll probably get some flak for it, I honestly don’t like Minori and the younger group all that much. Whether it’s their personalities, the group dynamics, or simply last season’s arguably excessive focus on them (and them alone), this side of Log Horizon just comes across as annoying at best and cringe at worst. The good news (for me at least) is that the promised focus on them this week didn’t amount to anything major – just a quick reminder or two of who’s who and the setup for the fun at the end of this season. Also the added benefit of placing it in the middle of Shiroe, Naotsugu, and the other older members (a major plus!). Of course, such thoughts may change next week when we return to the perpetual conflict that is securing Shiroe’s romantic attention, but I’m not expecting anything too egregious. After all, we all know Akatsuki is going to win that fight. No, no doubts allowed.

As for the actual premise of this arc, again no major surprises. Although it can be a little irksome we have another Genius once again threatening Akihabara (something something variety being the spice of life), the inclusion of our two Ancient wolf girls and Tetra’s hilariously on-point rage at poorly designed fetch quests and the allure of rare pixelated goods does their bit to show this latest challenge isn’t exactly the same as the last. Something is clearly drawing all manner of alien intruder to Akihabara in place of other cities (e.g. Minami), and it’s not the difference in Adventurer caliber. Anyone’s guess what that could be right now, but one thing is for sure: whatever it may be is bound to have a significant effect on Shiroe’s plan to get to the moon.

Well, at least after figuring out the method to reach the moon. Something tells me that bit may prove to be more trouble than it’s worth.
