「冷たい春」 (Tsumetai Haru)
“A Cold Spring”
And to absolutely no one’s surprise, it’s Lev who’s off to space. Yeah yeah, sounds a little tart, but for all the satisfaction of seeing it I think I can be a little exceptional with the post-mortem opinions on this one. After all, it comes with a high chance of death guaranteed to affect one little vampire no one wants to see shed a tear.
Much as called last week, Lev was effectively a shoe-in for first “true” man in space courtesy of that opinion and mindset of his. It’s often forgotten these days but the Soviet-era space program, contrary to on-planet debates, had a healthy degree of optimism and positivity associated with it: man is venturing into the great unknown and it is a future everyone can look forward too. Regardless of the revolutionary trappings, it very much was about leaping forward for the benefit of all. Lev was selected precisely because he embodied this idea best, wanting to go into space for the sake of going into space no matter the consequences to himself, a mindset which works best for Zirnitra as it enables them to show off a feat of human ingenuity (since Lev is doing it for the sake of space itself) while also reinforcing the act was possible because of Zirnitrian developments. There’s a lot tied up in the theatre of geopolitics, and Lev’s journey to main man shows it best.
Of course, there’s more to this story than just space these days as Irina can attest to. Probably no shocker, neither lovebird made any confessions of importance, though Lev skipping kissing and going straight for bloodsucking definitely had me raise an eyebrow – lack of voiced confession or not, there’s no mistaking what that move implies! Doubly so considering Irina herself is now in the open crushing stage with all the tell-tale signs of a girl hopelessly in love regardless of her ability to actually admit it. No matter my irks over Tsuki to Laika’s implementation of its setting, the gradual and arguably organic development of Lev’s and Irina’s relationship has been quite pleasant to watch unfold.
Things may soon get more challenging for the duo going forward however, as between Irina’s uncertain future and the potential Lev himself might run into trouble, there’s a good chance the current wave of happiness might soon encounter a cold wall of dread.
