「未来の記憶」 (Mirai no Kioku)
“Memories of the Future”
It was amusing last week seeing some of the comments about it being the first major twist of SnK’s final hurrah and how it changed everything – because if anything such remarks were just a tad early. You want twists it’s all here this week since after these casual revelations I’m sure more than a few are left with slacked jaws and raised eyebrows. Oh and the best part? You haven’t seen anything yet.
As promised at the very start this season was going to be a ride and Grisha of memory nonchalantly revealing the Attack Titan having the ability to see the future is the first major bit of that. Besides MAPPA really nailing the impact of this twist (nothing better than faces boring into soul) it also throws open everything regarding what’s happened in SnK to date. If Eren has the power of clairvoyance, just how much up until now was deliberate on his part? Just how many developments, how many changes, how many deaths did he consciously allow or make happen? As shown with Grisha and how he acted only with “encouragement”, Eren has clearly had an overbearing effect on everything up until now, so how far does that power go and what is its extent? Right now the sky is the limit and we’ve barely left the ground.
Given the far-reaching effects Eren’s new (old?) power has it’s pretty easy to see why this arc is known for going right off the rails, especially when paired with the chaos which is Zeke’s euthanasia plan. Zeke after all, for all his daddy issues, could’ve wound up where he is with his mindset because the previous possessor of the Attack Titan decided to steer him and Grisha that way using the Attack Titan’s power. His plan could’ve been a part of a larger plan, a convenient ploy or distraction from something greater and a way to move the pieces as the mastermind so deigned to do. It’s honestly hard to get a true grasp of just where SnK heads from here given the sheer potential held through such foresight, and it’s something which is probably best left to mull over instead of me hypothesizing too much (read: keeping spoilers to a minimum) at the moment.
After all, we still don’t know what Eren exactly has planned, but we won’t have to wait long to find out. Keep the popcorn handy, this ride is only just getting started.

By the end of episode, I went from WHO is Eren to What is Eren ?!!
Or better. WHY is Eren?
What the fuck is the author doing???
I liked the idea that you could change the past by interacting with it from the future, what Orson Scott Card termed “temporal backwash”.
