「記憶の中の真実」 (Kioku no Naka no Shinjitsu)
“The Truth Within the Memories”

In hindsight I’m getting a bit of a chuckle out of Eminence in Shadow’s latest episode falling both on winter solstice and barely a few days before Christmas. For all the seasonal hype ongoing we also have the first real taste of, shall we say, depth in this series (not to be confused with volume, beginner’s mistake), something I think nicely rounds out all the real-world festivities. Sure, it’s nothing really unexpected, but even comedy needs a bit of foundation every now and then.

Much as could be deduced a few weeks ago, the arm of Diablos wound up being a major factor in well, everything to date. Demonic powerup drops? Rare demonic powerup drops granting immortality and explaining the whole Knights of Twelve shtick? We got the answers to all of that, plus some confirmation of why the heroes are so important to the big bad cult. Honestly nothing here should really surprise (outside of secretive sci-fi lab clashing with the above-ground steam era aesthetics) so if anything the big takeaway is that we finally have a tangible baddie to focus future Cid-isms on. If Mr. Archbishop is only the Knight of Eleven we’ve got ten more to work our way through – and best be sure there’s one overactive imagination all set to tear them limb from limb.

Mind you Cid’s and Shadow Garden’s fight against evil is only half the picture here – we also have a pair of princesses as a potential spoiler. While easy to write Alexia and Iris off as veritable comedic relief (in terms of their plot role) they are admittedly set up to do more than that. Iris for one has already mused about fending off both the cult and Shadow Garden, something which could still materialize if the princess decides her younger sister happens to get whacked by whatever proceedings accompany the literal trip down memory lane. Such an occurrence wouldn’t even be that farfetched for Eminence in Shadow given that such a development is right up Cid’s alley and the kid will do what he can to live up to secretive mastermind expectations. Will it actually happen? No damn idea, but I think we know by now not to write anything off in this series.

After all, still got to see what ridiculous (yet assuredly amazing) ability the kid pulls to get out of this situation.

  1. That’s a nice looking research facility. But really, with that kind of resources, technology, and labor they should have studied nuclear physics instead of dabbling in occult and creating wannabe auschwitz.

I mean, as Clarke puts it “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic”

      1. …..I don’t think i can take someone who repeatedly bashed his own head in frenzy (both literally and figuratively) in search of magic, mistaking his own concussion for so called enlightenment and end up killing himself can be considered as smart. But, okay…. i still admire any tenacity and persistance no matter how stupid the reasons usually is,…

  2. They certainly did build up on Epsilon’s boob jokes. It was rather obvious that Beta did “see it” and is rubbing it in. Poor priest had to deny it, but Beta had motive, knowledge and ability to really rub it in. Inadvertently made Alexia want to let her die even more though.

The princesses should be plot relevant. They’ve just relegated Beta into a non-combatant. She was giving orders before they fell on her. Whatever happens next episode, that probably has some effect.

One thing I’m not sure about is how Alpha relates to Olivier. Is she some one that is related from Olivier or did they refine her to be as close as possible?

  3. This show makes zero sense, but it’s pretty fun to watch. To be honest, aside from Bleach and All Saints Street, that’s the only show of the season I continued watching.

Chainsaw Man, that s*** a*** Gundam, Isekai Ojisan, Beast Tamer, Tensei Shitara, Blue Lock, Muv Luv… These are the other shows I tried to watch, but ended up dropping.
