「天恵武姫の邂逅」 (Hairaru Menasu no Kaigou”)
“Encounter with the Hyral Menas”

For all I’m disheartened by how Maou Gakuin is turning out, the bright side is knowing the reincarnation shtick ain’t dead – it’s simply switched genders and gone full comedy. Oh yes, to say Eiyuuou has won me over would be an understatement, because nary two episodes in and I’m already awaiting what happens next week. Who knew Mondays would be so awesome.

One of things I particularly like about Eiyuuou right now is strong yet simplistic nature of its magic system. There’s no chanting, phraseology, or other magic tropes at work (at least yet), just a basic resource in mana which can be effectively refined into more potent aether and runes which allow the average person to wield abilities and weapons otherwise restricted to them. Part of enjoyment too is how Inglis slots in with this system. Yes she possesses all the power – but where’s the fun in simply snapping your fingers and eviscerating the enemy on sight? A willingness to literally prevent becoming part of the system in favour of working one’s way up the ladder is a very nice touch here and shows that Eiyuuou’s battles are going to be fun in part from having Inglis being deliberately forced into fighting on a more even playing field. Only need to look at the first such duel to get an idea.

Speaking of battles, oh the humour to come regarding one repeat offender. While major expectations of deep and complex story shouldn’t be expected in Eiyuuou, the presence of some mystery regarding the lapse of magic use, the status of so-called Highlanders, and the reaction by weapon-made-cute Eris towards Inglis’ name do indicate some interesting shenanigans incoming once the updated history of this world become known. Not a big leap for example to suspect Inglis’ patron goddess Alistia might have reconfigured things in the years between Inglis’ death and reincarnation, or that certain magic aspects are being deliberately throttled for the sake of power and status. Not like we’re lacking in hints to point in that direction.

The one thing which can be confidently said, however, is that whatever the upcoming twist, we at least know how Inglis will handle it. Whether swords or fists, this girl is going to happily beat on the competition, and I for one am looking forward to every glorious (and gloriously cute) moment of it.

  1. After watching this episode, I immediately purchased the three manga volumes available in English. Hopefully this will sate my need to read ahead because there are already ten volumes of the English translated light novel.

  2. I broke down and bought the first light novel and looked at the covers for the rest of them. I am currently fascinated that the anime opening had to show us ALL of the fifteen looking girls in the cast while the light novel covers just show the main character wearing different clothes.

    1. Not particularly surprised, light novel covers are much more limited in space than anime OPs so you aim to maximize what defines the story in question, and that here is most definitely Inglis. It’s also why the ED focuses hard on her 😛
