「不死」 (Fushi)
“Undead”
As it turns out, the dead do indeed tell tales after all, and some terrible ones at that. Hoshijiro in particular—at least, some Gauna reproduced and/or corrupted versions of her—returns with a vengeance, making it a cruel twist that really makes one’s stomach churn a bit. Granted, there is some consolation in the fact that Kunato’s totally mind @#$%!-ed as a result of this fight, but it’s ultimately very little considering how much it’ll take to get Hoshijiro’s creepy laughter throughout much of the episode out of my head…
That said, it’s another superbly executed episode that does much in terms of building on what we’ve already been shown. Sidonia no Kishi’s been nothing but clockwork in this respect, and it’s a notion highlighted not only by the aforementioned fight, but also the sudden flashback to the Fourth Gauna Defense War from a hundred years ago. Appropriately fitting considering the focus on Tanikaze and the new threat they face, there’s much to be said about the revelations that come about from this look into the past, and it doesn’t look good at all.
As Hiyama notes herself, she has a “bad feeling” about the situation in general, and one can’t blame her considering how things are repeating themselves here. Mirroring the situation 100 years ago, there are once again people calling for the discarding of the Kabizashi, Sidonia’s reeling after a recent near breach and an attack by a new type of foe, and Saitou’s highlighting their efforts against the Gauna again—albeit in the form of Tanikaze, who’s revealed to be not Saitou’s kid, but a clone with immortal characteristics.
Needless to say, the phrase “it all makes sense now” can’t be more appropriate here, as the latter explains not only why Tanikaze’s shown a propensity to survive even the most devastating injuries, but also why he’s constantly being deployed despite his experience, and why he’s been chosen to pilot the Tsugumori out of all the possible candidates. The fact all of this comes together so nicely is just a testament to the great storytelling that’s going on here in Sidonia no Kishi, and quite frankly I’ve been rendered rather speechless at how the pieces fit together here. Ultimately, there ain’t much to ask question-wise now that they’ve revealed so much about Tanikaze, and the fact that they’ve covered this so well means any vital questions we still have are likely to be addressed in the future at some point—making this the quintessential example of “doing story-telling right” and a show where you really can afford to sit back and watch without having to worry about fridge logic at all.
All in all, it’s just a mouthwatering episode that highlights the horrors that await in the vastness of the final frontier. The thing is though, isn’t in particularly risky holding on to that Hoshijiro placenta sample like that? I mean, I get chills running down my back every time they showed of her, and the last moments of this episode really don’t do any favors in that regard. There’s something especially sinister about her presence—literally and figuratively—but I guess it’s par for the course considering the fact that Sidonia’s being run by an Immortal Council (that’s hiding the technology to render people immortal while they’re at it) and the fact that they seem to be relying on a man who nearly led to Sidonia’s annihilation as a basis for the archives and some of the knowledge/tech they possess. The Sidonia’s a powder keg waiting to explode, and things just look worse and worse as the days ago by—all this despite Tanikaze’s expected rise in the ranks. It makes you wonder what would’ve happened if Kobayashi never discreetly cloned Saitou back then in the first place…

Placenta Hoshijiro is even hotter than the original that I would photosynthesize with it.
That’s hot? Wait till you see that OTHER Hoshijiro that ran away in the fresh.
Apparently a little insane makes girls sexy as hell.

Ooh, I see someone into tentacles too…
…and since The Gaunas made swarms of her copy, There’s one for everyone!
Samari is pretty smooth in executing that Gauna. No wasted movements, just 4 shots from the squad and an elegant thrust at the core.
That’s true leadership from the ground up. No wasted breaths, no wasted movement, no wasted commands, and aware and in control of the situation.
As expected of someone that tells others to cut the non-sense chatter, and get back to the task at hand.
She’s the real Elite of Sidonia – cool headed in action and execution and that shows in her team. No Freakouts whatsoever.
…And then Ichiro Seii gonna fight i the front again.
They should be the model on all engagements for now on for Sdonian Pilots
Well with the death of the top 4 aces, she is nr.5. Also the top ace right now
Nah, I believe She’s actually Nr.1 or 2, just that Tsuruuchi and The Rest of her team aren’t proud Jousting Champions nor in Top 5. Nevertheless they are functioning as a team much better than “Elite” 4.
Hiyama getting all cozy with Hiro was cute, with the way she kind of rolled on him and all that =03.
Short-hair Kobayashi > long-hair ponytail Kobayashi =03.
Hiroki, even as an old man, was pretty badass as a fighter. We can see where Nagate gets the talent for his quick reflexes from.
Really (O.o)? I thought there was something very…serene, maybe a bit sad, about the end there, with the gauna Hoshijiro. The music, the slight pausing in her(it’s?) words as she tries to say Tanikaze’s name, the very minimal movement and stillness of her eyes, that ‘dead’ expression on her face… they all make me feel like I want to cry (;_; ).
Quoted for Truth
Adult Izana is a plus! But a bear in a spacesuit? That’s enough anime for today.
dr. Shinatose Yure really like experimenting doesn’t she?
She made her own “grandchildrens” Intersex, surely a pride amongst her creations.
From her field of expertise, she must be behind The Honoka Series Clones too. Nagate is just 14 year old kid…why not make expendable clone pilots using accelerated growth of 5 years to maturity.
that fight to me, seemed a little confusing. didn’t Tanikaze destroy the one Gauna at the start? Seemed like there was an extra one on the battle screen roaming around, as it looked like there were 4 red flashing Gauna symbols.
Kunato’s freaking out was disappointing. Pretty lame for all the shit he’s pulled just to be revealed to be a coward. His karma scale is way out of whack.
and the flashback, while it gave some good back story, seemed a bit like an info dump. it happened so fast it was confusing. I didn’t know what was going on till Hiroki busted out of there with his clone. I had to re-watch it to get a batter idea of what happened. Gauna war, immortality, clones, yada yada yada.
I hope next episode has some better pacing.
“His karma scale is way out of whack.”
Ha, considering what will happen a few episodes later that is the one hell of an understatement.
Kunato’s freaking out because he never expected to hear Hoshijiro again (in a twisted sense).
BTW, it took me 3 reads in the manga to even grasp the flashback’s events, though to be honest, they skipped years in between scenes.
ps. The control center crew on Sidonia love their way to zooming in within the tactical maps…
In manga Kunato didn’t freak out.
True. The Kunato from manga was more composed at every point. Still, that made his betrayal to Tanikaze even more despicable, because it wasn born out of cold-blooded calculation.
“The Gauna will leave us alone if we disarm ourselves” – war and useful idiots never change. Did they forget that original attack by Gauna was hundreds years before the Kabzashi were even found?
I wonder what else surprises do we have after that – the immortality of the council was hinted when the Captain and Hiyama were been mentioned as veterans of previous war, and I suspected Tanikaze was a clone already before.
And, lets consider for a while the possible repercussions of zombie Hoshijiro being kept under research – the fact that she didn’t disintegrate when “her” Gauna’s core was destroyed means that either she is her own not-entirely-human entity, or a little Gauna itself that they willingly took aboard Sidonia…
#whatcouldpossiblygowrong #temptingfate
Yeah, that’s what I thought too at the time I was watching the manga too. It is just so obvious that a Guana breakout is waiting to happen.

GaunaJiro didn’t disintegrate because she was separated from the true body before the true body was destroyed.
I’d rather they just kill off Hoshijiro once and for all. For her to “return” in this form is just sad and painful to watch 🙁 Credit to the writers for good storytelling.
Oh wow, you just had to go there, didn’t you?
You think this is sad? You just raise the endless torture flag for Hoshijiro right there. We are talking about the manga series that the Mangaka of Attack of the Titans admits he is a fan of & the reason he started AOTT.
We all know sh*ts are hitting the fan for the next 4 episodes but it is apparent you don’t know how much sh*ts there are going to be.
Indeed, I’m not too familiar with how the story is going to go as I didn’t want to spoil myself with the manga. I can only guess that there will be endless experimentation to follow.
What? I didn’t know of that relation between the two SnK. That would explain a lot, actually.
Isayama Hajime is already a big fan of Tsutomu Nihei, but of his older works, not Sidonia no Kishi per se. KoS was serialized in April 09, where AoT in September 09.
Hajime, when KoS airs, went “OMG,OMG,OMG, Y’all have to see this!”.
But still, this didn’t spare Nihei from another author suffering, as he himself tweeted. It goes something like this:
Nihei’s Daughter: Daddy, Daddy
Tsutomu Nihei: What is it sweetie?
ND: Aren’t you a mangaka, you make manga.
TN: Well, of course darlin
ND: So, why don’t you make a cool manga like Shingeki no Kyojin?

You all know the female artist madonna, right?
Her daughter is or was a fan of britney spears…
It is nearly the same 😉
First thing first for those post above me: There’s only the manga’s creator to thank for this kind of pacing, the production committee did not have to alter much on the script (not that I noticed much alteration).

https://randomc.net/image/Sidonia%20no%20Kishi/Sidonia%20no%20Kishi%20-%2008%20-%20Large%2039.jpg
and I can’t wait for the reaction from the other viewers next week regarding her, it’s mind blowing.
Seemed to be a few different types of immortals there. The zombie variant, where they grow clones and do brain transplants, the medical variant, where they have an anti-aging serum, and the genetic variant.
I was a bit confused over which was which though – the dudes in the sarcophagi are a shoe-in for the brain only versions, Hiro was evidently the medical variety, given he aged when he stopped taking meds, Tanakaze is the newer version. Not sure where everyone else falls, although there’s evidently some overlap given they wanted to do a brain transplant job on Hiro ( presumably the medical version just halts aging, it can’t reverse it ).
I suppose it makes sense as newer versions of immortality that aren’t necessarily backwards compatible.
If you observe closely the entombed immortals eyes move. Whether that is their actual eyes, or artificial, who knows, but the line between man and machine for life is blurred when they’re willing to perform aforementioned methods to prolong their ‘lives’.
There aren’t “newer versions of immortals”. Nagate is a one off because they wanted Hiroki to fight for them eternally and Kobayashi seems to have feelings for him.
Kobayashi only have feelings for Gauna extermination. Hiroki was their ace for god knows how long so he is needed his abilities.
My take is that she’s more complex than “kill em all”

Excellent episode. We still didnt get an explanation of why hiyama is a bear thougg, she was already a bear in the flashbacks and no one seemed to care(except for tanikaze at first)… Hmm did she transplant her brain into a bear? Why would anyone do that? And whats with her mechanical hand?
Not even the manga readers know why Lala ended up in the bear.
If you remember the flashback to the alien structure they found containing the kabi, they fought a gauna inside. Lala’s arm was crushed in that fight.
Oh thank you, because here was only show us in a school leason
I like to think she ended up a bear as a joke that caught on to her liking. Perhaps it was what was readily available at the time, even if the real reason is just to scare Tanikaze and the viewer in that initial scene and empathize with a mother bear later on. Actual explanations tacked on afterward.
Just in case – Manga spoiler warning!

…What have they DONE to her?!
It’s like what happened to Kerrigan in Starcraft, but with about 20 times more emotional investment on the part of the viewer.
Heh yeah, when I was reading this part of the manga I was like: “Holy hell, this is totally the Zerg & the Queen of Blades right there. Guess someone is a fan of StarCraft.”
ALL SHALL FEAR THE QUEEN OF BLADES ALL HAIL THE HEART OF THE SWARM
Sorry couldnt resist
Dunno about Starcraft, but Nihei is known as an Halo player, and once made a part of an Halo Graphic Novel, about escape from Flood Quarantine Installation.
Does anyone know how well Sidonia is doing for Japanese sales? I soooo want a second season.
Me too. Domo arigato
Holy crud, I just looked up the studio doing Sidonia, and when you look at their resume it is no surprise they excel action CGI. A lot are my favorites in the genre.
To name a few:
Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (2002 Production I.G. Mamoru Oshii-directed anime film; 3DCG animation parts)
Transformers: Prime (2011 CG TV series for Hasbro and The Hub)
Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2011 Cartoon Network)
Tron: Uprising (2012 Disney XD)
Heck even games
Onimusha 2 (2002 Capcom video game)
Dead or Alive 4 (2006)
Resident Evil 5 (2009)
Lollipop Chainsaw (2012 Kadokawa Games)

First i thought they are some subcompany of the GT PS3 game company
Pretty solid episode, I have to say except for one little thing. Bows, are you kidding me, they have mechs that have arm cannons, they have planet busters, yet they can’t even make some shotguns or pistols? It seemed that was only there to show how much of a badass the original was. That was the only issue in the entire episode.
Depending on the nature of the weapon, firearms can cause over-penetration, not something you want when you are in a giant tin can surrounded by vacuum. And delicate machinery keeping you alive.
Blah, just use Gauss Guns with adjustable velocity – so able to launch either Tranquilizer Darts or XREP Taser Shells.
Hook up that gun with Laser Rangefinder, Scanner,
Ballistic Computer; so the gun can adjust the power automatically depending on what the gun are aiming at.
Hell, if the Arrows were laced with Tranquilizers, Hiroki would’ve simply collapse on the spot.
You’re telling the creator of the Graviton Beam Emitter to use NON-lethal rounds to LIMIT collateral damage?
In Nihei’s mind: “Does not compute, does not compute”
Nah, he’ll think about the full-powered lethal mode of the gun first : Shoot needles at hypersonic speeds. Punch through frontal armor in tiny entry hole, exits through with 20 metres of pink cloud and red stains…
Besides, The Graviton Beam Emitter was …arguably designed with collateral damage in mind; uh, you know… thats why it got power settings…
I mean, uh, the recoil …,uh,most likely ,uh…won’t kill the shooter.
It’ll just dislocate joints…or break your bones…or rip your arms out of the socket…
Do not gunpowder need oxygen to create a reaction?
No external oxygen source is needed. Gunpowders both blackpowder and modern smokeless powder contain an agent that provides oxygen so everything is self contained.
Gunpowder already got Nitrates as oxidizer.
Ah okay, but underwater it will not work because it gets wet? That was my base around it
Old-fashioned blackpowder is hygroscopic and is vulnerable to water, modern ammo is less sensitive to water immersion. Firearms can be fired underwater but unless you know what you’re doing its not very safe.
AKM fired underwater: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cp5gdUHFGIQ
Though I have no sympathy for Kunato the anime is going hard out to make him look contemptible. In the manga he didn’t freak out in that fight.
Yep, he can fight just fine.
Yeah, at least in the manga he wasn’t taxing his suit’s waste reclamation capabilities.
Even so I enjoyed to see the little bastard cry.

MAKE ALL THOSE KITS HAPPEN KOTO!
Kits…According to Nihei own words:
“Two months until Sidonia no Kishi deadline. Neither the name nor a single page was done. What the Editors really see was a man in his Fourties grinning widely while holding his own self-made kit, inside a foul-smelling room full of plastic kits.”
He made the Guardian model himself out of random parts from assortments of kits he bought in dozens.
Kotobukiya already made Sidonia Guardian Kits…well, not Kunato Development Type 18 nor the antique Toha Heavy Industries Type 5 like what Yuhata was assembling in the scene…but yep, you’ll guess it, Toha Heavy Industries Type 17 “Tsugumori” complete with Kabizashi SpearShow Spoiler ▼
i wonder what g through Kobayashi mind when she was crying , if she loves hiro she would be like “You can’t leave me ever , you have to save sidonia with me , even if you die , i will clone you forever” sometime living as an immortal is kinda lonely
Highlander the movie. In the end he was lonely, saw his belowed ones die with old age and he still yong. His immortality was more a curse then salvation. But perhaps she was crying to lead the last hope of survivors. They was near on dieing.. now we know why they used clonig…
Perhaps on the last survivors, she was the highest rank. And they choses her as captain. The old original crew was dead
I’m getting some serious ‘possessive girlfriend’ vibes over here.
Good to know, that the Captain has someone to lean on, that she can trust. But, to be honest, i am curious too why “Mama bear” is stuck with this Suit. the attack was not the cause, because she already was inside of it. Perhaps a bit of “Ghost in the Shell” vibes here? Only her Brain is Human, and lost her Body because of some virus?
Has the manga elaborated on what the Gauna truly are and what they really want?
No
Okay, there is a single big difference that made the destruction of a planet seems so trivial:Show Spoiler ▼
Yeah, I wonder why the anime didn’t show that part, at least not in this episode.
Awesome ep imgo, the way they put Benisuzume to screen was awesome. Beyond what I expected from this sequence.
Tanikaze may be a clone with extra updates, but in a broader sense is like the Captain’s and Hiro’s son. No wonder the Captain, despite being very calculating, is protective of him.
I’m glad the anime chose to reveal that at this point. In the manga there was some harmless filler, and I think the gravitas of the revelation felt more natural at this point of the story.
oh and i thought we were gonna have a triangle between Tanikaze , Izana and Hoshijiro … it seems is just Tanikaze and Izana now (is s/he still undefined or is a woman now? … i still see him/er wearing shorts so i guess undefined yet)
the last 2 episodes been “wow” … waiting for the next one! (should i be scared?)
PS: mm gues Tanikaze IS really immortal lol…

I'm glad that kept the part where Hiroki calls Mother Bear cute, he says it more than once in the manga though, if I'm not mistaken ;p
Shall we add Hiroki to the Badass Grandpa Hall of Fame?
With Episode 09 fresh in Mind…
Can it be that these speer’s are something very important for them?
If my Mind not fails me, they found these Tips on the Spears’s inside a alien structure, right?
What if this Structure was some kind of graveyard for a God?
A new Power source prototype structure that failed, or this Power source called the Gauna in their dimension (kinda freezing manga)
But then, these tunnels on the surface could be the way that they created when moved to the core section of this structure.
Question:
Did all Seeds ships left Earth, at the same time? or did some of them went ahead first? then perhaps this are leftovers of some earlier seed ship. Or a DNA Experiment went terrible wrong, and all civilians on board became this Seed ship thing…
Joke speculation:
If someone would use clue to put them back together, perhaps they get a sphere. And a higher life-form would appear out of the blue. because this is a beacon 🙂
