“Present For You”

I wouldn’t mind a whole episode of just Kuzehashi-sensei.

Resting Bitch Face

Intentional or not, people who are plagued with this natural expression have to deal with a ton of unwanted stress in their lives. Constantly giving off the image that you’re unhappy or displeased with something or another because of the natural state your face stays in, RBF or Resting Bitch Face is something we all have to recognize exists!

In Kuzehashi-sensei’s case though, it’s a damn shame her outward appearance takes on such a stark contrast compared to what she’s feeling inside. While it may have that polished professional look at first, it’s impossible not to feel bad for her as any attempt to show empathy gets misunderstood as being cold, stern, and strict. And as the episode played out, I could feel the slight tinge in my heart from last week slowly get stronger and stronger. Because I mean, it’s not her fault that her face takes on that kind of expresion!

Luckily though, with a combination of Karen’s stubbornness and Karasuma-sensei’s hip knowledge of how kids work, things started to turn around for Kusshi-chan as everyone started to realize she’s not as scary as they thought she was. And even though I’m sure this will come back since it’s just too good of a plot point not to, I’ll take the little wins we can get!

Afternoon Tea Time

Another thing that I love about this show has to be how much it tries to integrate English-type things into everyday life in Japan — except it never seems to work out. This week’s attempt at an Afternoon Tea Time was fun to watch but ended up being more of an Afternoon Baking Time. Something which I have absolutely no problems with since that’s usually what tends to happen when I try to do the same thing. I mean, when was the last time you tried to do something on the fly with friends only to get caught up by something else?

Also, did you notice all the little tidbits the characters dropped during all of that? From Youko breaking Ayaya’s hearts in half to Karen bringing the most Japanese thing possible to an English Tea Time, it’s hard not to giggle a bit thinking about the potential hidden meanings behind it all.

Looking Ahead

As with any slice-of-life, it’s tough to try to predict what’ll happen next week. What I hope to see though, is a continuation of all the great things that make this show such a fun watch. See you next week!

  1. This show makes me question, is cute moe overdose a type of mind-altering drug?
And if it is, does it come in the pill form with concentrated formula?

I want prescription strength of what I’m feeling, I want to be so high on moe overdose that it takes me a week to come back down.

  2. Sometimes I get that. “Why are you mad??” “I’m NOT mad! …well NOW I am because you’re making me!” Not everyone can be totally ‘on’ at all times.

I suppose this is tea party and baking week :3 I’m glad you are blogging this!

  3. I find it quite surprising that many scenes in the ED look an awful lot like the places in London:

    1. There was a scene with a red bus – that’s outside the Royal Metals Exchange (left) and the Bank of England (right), on Threadneedle Street, looking back towards the tube station.

    2. Westminster Palace and Big Ben

    3. I’m guessing the Charing Cross bridge looking back towards Waterloo bridge (though they took it out and used the next bridge: Blackfriars Bridge instead) and Royal Festival Hall. The left side (near the Strand) is better looking than the scene shows however.

    4. The scene with them crossing the road is probably in Bloomsbury, Chelsea or Kensington.
