「科学室のふたり」 (Kagaku-shitsu no Futari)
“The Two in the Science Room”
This week’s episode sees the formal introduction of two new characters into the Leilla group The red hair girl Mei Yoneme (Yabushima, Akane) and Shiki Wakana (Ookuma, Wakana) but the little twist here is that Shiki is the one who up and decides to join Leilla. It looks like things are going to be easy for her as she already has some innate abilities down to the T. Meanwhile Mei is forced to keep her distance and become only an observer. For a little while at least. Shiki’s feelings are in the right place. She knows Mei wants to join the school idol club but doesn’t want to intrude. Meanwhile, Mei is way too stubborn and won’t admit to herself that her dream might actually be becoming one of them who stands on that stage.
So Shiki takes the initiative and asks the Leilla girls to help her out by giving Mei a helping hand and realizing her true feelings. In reality, Mei is just but a sweetheart who puts on a tough front, and always end’s up being misinterpreted because of her scary look. When in reality she refuses to wear glasses, and thus always ends up staring and glaring at other people like they’re beneath her in some type of way. But not really, she’s just a sweet girl who gets mistaken for being mean. But I do hope with the rest of the cast now present in the group, that Mei gets more screen time and ways to develop her character.
On the other hand, in the story of how Mei and Shiki became friends, Mei rejecting the popular kids to follow her own accord, and Shiki just wanting to be alone and read her science books, they found a type of middle ground along the way and discovered that they both wanted the same thing, that being; Be left alone to their own devices, but have some company along the way. To be able to do what it is they want to do, to be able to pursue their dreams and hopes with no judgment or any type of review from others. And that’s what I loved about them both. Shiki wishes to go into science studies, hence the white robe, Love Live tends to be very literal like that sometimes, and Mei the tsundere who is not actually a tsundere. I like that actually – her character really got out of her shell for me in this episode.
On the other hand, the YouTuber girl is still to turn around and become likable to me, even though she works hard to support her Youtuber endeavor, her reactions to others has been so far irrelevant to me. I don’t really care for her just yet, we will have to wait and see if in the next episode there’s any change with the introduction of her backstory, only time will tell.
Oh! Let’s not forget about the big development of this episode, Kanon not actually becoming the president of the club, I personally think Chisato is a great choice for becoming president, and her reaction to Kanon after the little flashback of how Kanon helped Chisato become a better person during their childhood, tells me that Kanon was also very happy to see Chisato take the helm, especially after they told the news to the girls (formally) and Kanon just smiling all the way through, I just found it super wholesome and loved this direction. The friendship between these two girls is immediately intrinsic.
I personally love the wholesome aspect of the show, and how it superbly mixes in drama with the girls, funny moments throughout, and songs that are catchy and enthralling at the same time. Even though I’ve noticed some shortcuts in the production of this second season, there is still a lot to love with Superstar! It’s a series that has moved its way into my heart and made me fall in love with it all over again!
