Gundam Thunderbolt – 02

This is the Gundam we truly deserve – gorgeously animated and harrowingly cruel.

「泣くのは弱いからじゃない。耐えられるのは強いからじゃない」 (Naku no wa Yowaikara Janai. Tae Rareru no wa Tsuyoikara Janai)
“Crying Doesn’t Mean You’re Weak. Enduring Doesn’t Mean You’re Strong.”
This week on Grimgar we focus on the three things needed to grieve after losing a loved one: tears, cuddles, and alcohol.

This was as faultless as they come – subtle, emotional, and thoroughly entertaining. The only thing that dampens the mood is knowing that death and despair awaits us beyond the horizon.

Short-form anime just keep getting better. |
People often say it’s the quiet ones you have to watch out for. That’s certainly the case with Tabi Machi Late Show, which came from nowhere and proved to be an ambitious little show that deserves more attention than it has received.
「灰の舞う空へ」 (Hai no Mau Sora e)
“Sky Dancing with Ash”
This episode is a game changer – gorgeous, brutal, and tense. If you thought things were going too slow, you’re in for a whopper.

After last week’s dramatic war story, things are going swell until a certain geisha steps onto the scene, throwing a spanner in the works.
「ゴブリン袋には俺たちの夢がつまっているか」 (Goburin-bukuro ni wa Oretachi no Yume ga Tsumatte iru ka)
“Are Goblin Pouches Filled with our Dreams?”
The details of a living in a fantasy world, the perversion of teenage boys, and the killing for a living – that’s what Grimgar is all about.

Not enough anime focus on stories set in Japan during WWII, but more often than not those that do dip their toe into that era end up packing an emotional punch. Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu is no exception, delivering a gorgeous depiction of the horrors of wartime and the trials it puts through everyday people who don’t deserve to suffer.
「見習い義勇兵の長い一日」 (Minarai Giyuu-hei no Nagai Ichinichi)
“Long Day of the Trainee Volunteer Soldier”
Hai to Gensou no Grimgar is a tale of two halves – of bloody murder and casual slice of life.

The key to successful storytelling is to deliver your words with a smile – yet the ability to have the audience in the palm of your hand is the absolute sign of success.
