Summary:
The girl in the cat costume leads Minoru and Maria to a cosplay karaoke bar, but when Minoru tries to question her, she misunderstands and takes off her top instead. Though surprised, Minoru notices a special mark on her side that’s the same as the one he saw on the old man’s forehead, however he isn’t able to question the girl about it because the bar’s owner throws him out. The two of them are fortunately able to find refuge from the rain in another hotel, and although they’re forced to share a room, Maria is depressed because Canaan won’t know where they are. Canaan, however, shows up outside their window the next morning to take Maria up on her offer to play. Minoru tries to question her about herself, but she just wants to go play, and so he has no choice but to let the two girls go.
Canaan and Maria spend the first part of their day shopping and sightseeing, and while they’re taking a break, Canaan comments on how this is her first time playing with a friend like this. This reminds Maria of their past together when she had taught Canaan cat’s cradle, and Canaan had revealed that she used to have a sister. Canaan had lost her family in a conflict, and Maria remembers seeing all the weapons in Canaan’s room. Canaan had also shown Maria the snake tattoo on her arm, and she had told Maria that it matched one on someone she likes. Back in the present, Canaan observes that Maria uses the word sugoi (lit. great, wonderful) a lot, and she uses it to describe Maria herself. Minoru meanwhile runs into the cat costume girl again, realizes that she’s a mute, and feeds her a bun.
Canaan and Maria’s next stop is on the Shanghai Bund sightseeing tunnel ride, but halfway through, the ride shuts down, and Canaan senses something and goes to investigate. This leaves Maria alone with the other passenger on the ride, the younger brother of the old man that Canaan killed. By the time Canaan returns, Maria is gone, so Canaan uses her synesthesia ability to track her down. She eventually finds Maria in a sewer area with a time bomb strapped to her head, and the kidnapper is somewhere in the room, but Canaan can’t see or sense where. The kidnapper claims that it’s because they are broken, and he explains that the village where he was born and raised was made the subject of an UA Virus experiment. He and his brother went through a sort of mutation where they were able to regenerate internal organs, and the brother that Canaan killed had two hearts but suffered from advanced aging.
The kidnapper describes himself and his brother as creatures created by the UA Virus, just like Canaan. She responds to all of this by charging towards a narrow pipe shaft on the other side of the room, and a bullet comes out of it, wounding her in the arm. The kidnapper, who is able to contort his body in every direction, then emerges from the pipe shaft and approaches Maria. Since time is running out on the bomb, Canaan pulls out her gun and tries to get him to hand over the release switch, but it turns out that he’s swallowed it. Remembering how the kidnapper had told her earlier that he had no intention of killing her but that he expected Canaan to dispose of him if he put her in danger, Maria now tries to stop Canaan, but she shoots the guy in the stomach. When this doesn’t stop the timer on the bomb, Canaan rushes towards Maria, but she’s too late, and the timer goes off. The bomb, however, turns out to be just a toy. Canaan then unties Maria, who is still in shock, and after she realizes the color of rejection in Maria, she walks away.

Episode three served up more humor and action, plus some Hakko fanservice (she’s more likable every appearance she makes), and they seem to have struck a really nice balance. I feel like I’m repeating myself, but in this case, that’s a good thing. Minoru’s a much less serious character than I originally thought he’d be, and I really laughed when the water fountains went off during his second encounter with Hakko – it was very good comedic timing. Maria and Canaan’s relationship, on the other hand, is taking a more serious turn, and it looks like Canaan killing that younger brother/kidnapper guy estranged Maria.
That’s partially thanks to how the younger of the two brothers (who’s incidentally listed in the credits without a name) came off as a surprisingly sympathetic character, and I wonder if the series will be divided into mini-arcs with more characters like him who were affected by the UA Virus. That’s a long way of saying that I’m hoping that Alphard instead makes a bigger splash in the story soon, though I’d also like to see more with Yunyun since it appears now that she’s not just comedic relief. In any case, the next episode looks to examine more of the past, which might be enlightening for me who hasn’t played the original game.
I should also mention that visually, the series still hasn’t let me down, and this episode even had a nice CG segment when Canaan was using her powers on the computer system (it’s interesting that she’s even able to do that). I was amused too to see them show actual tourist attractions in Shanghai like the sightseeing tunnel since I’ve ridden on it before.
Bad show, it is the worst show ever.
Hmm, I’m liking the distancing being put in between Maria and Canaan at the end. I hope those types of emotions are further developed, and isn’t something that Maria gets over quickly by the next episode.
oh! Lots of Cat pr0n! Very nice =3
“Bad show, it is the worst show ever.”
Says the troll.
Gotta wait for the subs to come out before I understand what Canaan did with the wiring. I know it has to do with synethesia but the rest is lost on me, even though I read a definition.
This was a surprisingly serious direction the Maria and Canaan relationship turned, but I’m confident Maria will somehow rebound/come to terms with what Canaan did. I’m more interested in what kinda relationship Alphard and Canaan have. On a completely different note. I’m still hoping Canaan and Mari will eventually follow the path of yuri.
Hello, I would like to offer you the opportunity to blog K-ON!
I know you think you are too good for this anime, but could you blog it?
I am in denial it has ended, so could you continue the blog?
@CHIBI
you’re kind of freaky dude…
Best show, it is the best show ever.
Well not really, but Canaan is shaping up very nicely. It has a good combo of various things, but doesn’t screw them up. The animation quality is top notch, and the characters are like-able.
Looking good, favorite show of the season
I’m calling a “Burst Angel” romance development between the two girls….
UA Virus,weeee!
Great Episode just great. I wanna no more about the UA virus.
How nice…we got to see Canaan use her powers on a computer but she didn’t even bother to figure out if the bomb was even real or not. She completely fell for the boy’s plan. Oh well, some more info on this cliché UA virus is very much needed. BTW, don’t get your hopes up on the yuri.
Awesome episode =D I kinda liked the boy…too bad he had to go so early ;_; Though it’s weird how if Maria wanted to stop Canaan, instead of calling her name (which provokes Canaan even more to shoot) she should have just yelled “stop”. (I mean, the kid swallowed the switch already..)o.o That aside, love the lol moments in this episode such as the Hakko & Minoru scenes XDD And Alphard is looking hot in this pic: https://randomc.net/image/CANAAN/CANAAN%20-%2003%20-%20Large%20Preview%2002.jpg (that IS Alphard right?)
Canaan is like something from a long gone golden age. None of this trashy rehashed stuff. Goddamn, good job Omni – glad you like it as much as we do.
How about Umineko no Naku Koro ni? Hopes for the show to be blogged.
To rin ~
My Japanese is far from fluent, but from the few words I understood, it sounded like the kid was telling Maria that the only thing she could say was Canaan’s name or something bad would happen (then he really would blow her up?) If I’m wrong about the translation, then I completely agree with you that Maria should have said something to the effect of “don’t do it!”
i dunno what this is so i am abit curiuos, but i have watched this episode with difrent sources of stream and in each of them this happens so i aint sure if it is trolling or what it is. In the middle of the episode (the commercials) there is some text on the screen and some japanese speaking in the background the subtitles translates it to sumthin like “Lelocuh was the cart driver watch his and furry kallens adventures in code geass 3” im just wondering if this really was said in the commercials or what it was but sadly i dont understand japanese, so could any1 tell me what is going on?
Please drop this and review other decent animes
So the snake pattern matches the other snake leader..those two like each other? Because I remember the snake leader not doing anything about Canaan this episode =/
AWESOME ANIME! Keep on reviewing 😉
They just had to synchronize the fountains with Mino’s reactions.
@Alex
Omni is blogging this show on his own free will. So, you telling him to drop this and blog about another anime won’t convinced him. Use some common sense, okay?
@bout Canaan
The show is getting better and better. Still don’t really understand Canaan’s power though but I gotta say that it’s one of the coolest power ever. I want to hack a computer using my own body.
i think the reason she could do the electric thing was, because she felt the electricity and since her senses are mixed she could also see through it as well
Canaan evidently has former connection to the Snakes… renegade assassin?
There is a undisclosed agency represented by meganekko long-black-hair woman who is liaison to Canaan set up as enemy to the Snakes.
UA virus is much more than bio-weapon it seems.
More experiments with it by the Snakes is expected, in the facility with under-pressure rooms to avoid contamination, presumably.
Eagerly awaiting more background disclosure. Feeling like Minoru right nw, trying to complete the puzzle.

Nice head gear
So that guy did all that just to shock Canaan’s friend? No one else finds that incredibly lame?
Anyone know no-name boy’s voice actor?
So that guy did all that just to shock Canaan’s friend? No one else finds that incredibly lame?
The kid works for the Snakes; and the Snakes are after both Canaan and Maria. The kid’s actions resulted in creating a rift between the two, which could possibly be good for the Snakes next time they go after one of them (especially Maria).
That, and maybe he just misses his brother and wanted to see him again.
quit feeding the troll’s dumass’s.
It’s really odd how Canaan can hack into the computer system but cannot do the same with the bomb… And did she really think that if the release switch was destroyed the bomb would stop or Maria would be freed? No comments… It makes me want to never see this show again.
Maybe Maria didn’t say anything but Canaan’s name because she truly believed Canaan wouldn’t kill the boy. She wanted the boy to be wrong, to know for sure that Canaan had a heart, just like any other girl. Her state of disbelief after the event supports this.
No, the boy made Maria to only say one thing and that was “Cannan”. if she tried to say anything else, he will blow himself up.
is it me or does the UA Virus sound sorta like the Marburg Virus with mutations? But overall this series sorta reminds me of NOIR / MADLAX without the extremely ginormous plot twists
