I stopped watching Terra e… a long time ago, but perhaps I shouldn’t have because after today’s episode, they aired a teaser trailer for the next Gundam series called Gundam 00 (pronounced “Double 0”) coming this October in the Saturday 6PM JST timeslot. The trailer, which is 16 seconds long, comes at the heels of a lot of rumors that started as early as last year that the series will be directed by Mizushima Seiji (who also directed Fullmetal Alchemist). As you can see above, the trailer had some text in it which translates to:

Gundam Meister – four pilots who operate mobile weapons
Mobile Suit Gundam 00 – October, 2007, Saturday evenings at 6PM
Rebirth begins through destruction
My first thoughts on seeing the trailer were “It’s about time” (yes, echoing what was said in the Starcraft II trailer). The four boys shown above are most likely the four Gundam Meisters (that name reminds me of Otome) along with being rather bishounen, and I would speculate that at least some of them start out as part of this Solestal Being group. The mecha designs at first don’t look horribly original, but we’ll see what they look like in full once more information starts coming out. In any case, I’m excited now, and this just adds to the list of shows I’m really really looking forward to October (others including CLANNAD and hopefully the next season of CODE GEASS).
Is it really too much to ask for a new UC Gundam series? (Probably so, considering most of the fan-base that watches these newer Gundams has never seen the originals, and if they have probably can’t handle old-school animation).
Well, it already looks better than SEED (character design-wise), so let’s see if they can pull of a decent Gundam outside of the UC timeline (with the exception of Turn-A, I’d argue that they haven’t; SEED borrowed way too much, and failed towards the end).
The head design on the blue one does not look like standard gundam fare (not the samurai Kabuto as seen in the first shot, or the classic mono-eye)

well, ive never had much luck with gundam series, or octobers for that matter. but ill be sure to check out the first few eps just in case its good XD
anyways, its been a great year so far and its about to get even better. so many awesome series coming out. higurashi no naku koro ni kai, zero no tsukaima 2, school days, otoboku 2, da capo 2, clannad, prism ark, kara no kyoukai, and possibly even the last 2 eps of geass!!! *drools*

The character design looks rather bad compared with the design of characters in Seed. Why can’t Sunrise just stay with the Seed franchise?

People, you do not need to worry about yaoi scenes in this new Gundam. While there are obviously a subset of people in JApan who like that stuff, Gundam is far too much of a mainstream show, one which children likely watch, for there to be yaoi integrated.
they should make some change and have a girl pilot the mobile suit xD
@omni: Yup, you really shouldn’t have dropped Terra he… I would have probably suggested dropping Idolmaster XENOGLOSSIA in a heart beat & just do Toward The Terra instead, but that is just me. If you watched all the way to episode 8 also, you’d see that the anime is actually pretty darn nice, even considering it’s old school anime style.
Anyway I’m guessing the fourth bishounen guy there with the scarf will be the main protagonist in Gundam 00
I agree with Heiae–while I like some of the alternate-universe Gundam series and I’m glad that this isn’t another SEED series, I really, seriously wish they’d make another UC Gundam. Hell, they could even do a remake of the original to reacquaint today’s audience with the story, because all I really remember about 0079 was that Char was absolutely nuts, but somehow remained likeable.

@Eirias: I’m somewhat reassured. But I don’t necessarily agree that there won’t be any yaoi integrated just because children will end up watching it. I’ve seen other animes/mangas that are clearly geared towards children that still have shounen-ai in them… but I guess shounen-ai and yaoi are totally different in degrees. No boy-love in Gundam 00=I will watch Gundam 00… Well… I take that back. I’ll still watch it even if there is, I’ll just cringe a lot and fast forward… but hopefully there won’t be any. (: no offense to all those who enjoy shounen-ai and yaoi! (:

Nice! But I’m not gonna get too excited lest my hopes be dashed like SEED :(. The formula sounds strangely like Gundam Wing though – and the last bishounen is slightly reminiscent of Hiro. Ah well, I saw that series when I was still a kid and loved it. I just hope the plot and characters actually have substance this time :P.

@Nobunaga: The designs look bad compared to SEED? excuse me, but I think I’m speaking up for many people by saying that the characters in SEED are plain and almost all of them have the exact asem face. Pretty? yes. But far from good characterisation.
I’m intrigued with these new series. They seem to be going down the original path, and that’s never a bad thing. I hope they try to give it a new spin to the Gundam saga, because it is getting a bit boring already with all the classical designs.
@Kaito: yhea Well…That’s not gonna happen..according to the interview with Bandai/sunrise’s CEO, SEED is one of the most successful anime in the 21 century(THE most successful for Sunrise)…so like hell there gonna drop it.
– Seed movie is still in production, going for a winter 2008 theatrical release..
– Seed 3 is in planning…I think it will go into production after Fukuda is finished with the Seed movie..
And no, Gundam 00 is NOT going to replace Seed. According to the interview, Gundam 00 is going to create a new “3rd fanbase” for the Gundam franchise. (same age group as Seed fans, but mostly males)

Here’s an idea… how about answering to fan demand and animate Mobile Suit Crossbone Gundam? That’s the biggest opportunity for the franchise to do something new while resonating with old school fans of the Universal Century!!
This looks good and I hope that it won’t turn out to be a craptacular show like Seed Destiny.
I was never a fan of any Gundam series, my fav mecha anime is Eureke Seven and Code Geass, however the fact that the story is by Mizushima Seiji will make me watch at least the first two episodes.
Mizushima isn’t writing it, just directing it.

I concur. I hated the character designs in the SEED series. And if the rumors are true and this is from FMA’s director, that’ll be even more incentive for me to watch.
Well it has the shininess of Seed, but unlike Seed it has a competent director, there may be hope for this yet. Let’s just hope it doesn’t throw away all its potential like Seed and go down the crapper. Still, I would have preferred a GundamUnicorn Series or OVA, but just not having to live through another Seed series is enough for the time being.
I got to say that from the image of the main Gundam (it’s got to be, it’s got the red, white and blue thing going on) I like the fact they are at least tinkering with the designs and not completely changing them, a la Turn A “Hige” Gundam. I am intrigued by the fact that Tohru Furuya is doing the narration, might he actually voice a central character in the series?
I do wonder how the story will work out with the Dancouga Nova-ish slogan. I just hope that they don’t drop the ball like the staff of Seed did with Seed Destiny.

Maybe you’d like to discuss UC with others of your kind who thinks UC = automatically better gundam series than the rest without having no substantial reasons to back them up. Your credibility diminished the moment you pointed UC gundam series having “old-school animation”.

Oh give me a fuckin’ break man. I liked Seed, I liked a lot of the newer Gundam shows and yes, I watched ALL the older UC shows.
The UC continuity has been bled dry and that is not of any fault of newer viewers. Let’s stop the elitism here.

A Gundam being placed in the Universal Century doesn’t automatically make it better; saying that is stupid, and I certainly didn’t say that.
As the record stands, the Gundams outside of the Universal Century haven’t been all that great. Wing lacked direction, X wasn’t too bad but the plot couldn’t live up, and SEED was alright but ultimately just borrowed too much from the original (meaning MS Gundam) and didn’t have a satisfying conclusion. Destiny? Well, it threw the new main character in the back-seat half-way through and just wasn’t all that great all-around. Yes, I have seen them all. And yes, I have reasons for not digging them.
Turn-A, on the other hand, had direction. A great plot and deep characters.. That’s what Gundam needs. Not needless action and under-developed plot-points and characters like it has been getting these past few years in all the other spin-offs. Tomino’s Gundams have something that others don’t (Tomino directed Turn-A and many of the UC Gundams).
Hey, I’m not even saying every UC Gundam rocks. ZZ Gundam is AWFUL for the first half. The UC continuity just has so much history it’s just a shame to let it just sit there like it has been (in the world of anime, anyway.. aside from the movies).

Really now? That’s a silly point. I know plenty of Gundam fans who won’t sit down and watch the older series because it lacks the flair of more modern Gundams. People like that exist. They’re out there. I promise.

Oh, it had a lot of holes plotwise. It was passable because of the recurring roles by Char and Amuro. Other than that, it didn’t hold up as well as Char’s Counterattack and MSG IMO.

Is it just me or do all of the four characters look sullen and petulant? Not to mention that the first two long-haired guys definitely don’t look like “good guys” to me. My bet is on the shorty with the scarf as the main character, too. Finally, it’s a long overdue goodbye to SEED!
And my first impression of the third character was that ‘he’ was a girl. @_@

This looks interesting! The mecha seems to be going to the direction of super robot wars…especially that blue one. Or you could say it’s a mix of the strike and stargazer gundams >.
Hehe, I think the consensus is that the purple haired character is a “girl” (I have my doubts) and that the character in the last image (with the scarf) is the hero.
I don’t have any problems with the bishounen look, but I do hope that this series isn’t portrayed in the way Seed and Seed Destiny were. Having watched all of Gundam (that I can get my hands on, even that Canadian-made movie :P, with the exception of Wing and G for now) I felt that the UC series were more realistic in their portrayal of war. I mean how realistic is it for one mobile suit to be able to destroy hundreds of grunt units so easily (Freedom)? Although other suits have done as much, it just seemed like the portrayal of Freedom was way overboard and made it a tad bit unrealistic.
Not to say that I did not enjoy Seed, it had its good points here and there, but they could have done much better with Destiny. It’s like the writers gave up on Shinn and boy did they turn Athrun into such a mess.
I do hope that in this series they can try to develop a rivalry between scarf-boy and his antagonist in a manner befitting a Gundam series.
Oh yes, someone mentioned elsewhere (might have been on the Suki boards) regarding how this series is supposed to be geared towards high school and college students, any truth to that?
Uc isn’t flawless. Seed/Destiny didn’t totally suck. This will hopefully be great. People need to get over getting another UC show. It’s not gonna happen anytime soon. It’s going to be this and then the Seed movie and other specials in UC. As much as people hate Destiny here, the francise is far from dead.

If anything, I think we can all agree that the new show will create a lot of buzz and speculation. We didn’t have that for a Sunrise show since Mai Otome. Thought there’s gossip-worthy tidbits in Gurren Lagann and Darker than Black nowadays.

CODE GEASS created a ton of buzz and speculation. 😛 It is one of, if not the most, popular shows I’ve ever blogged.
In fact, with this new Gundam series, there’s a very real possibility that two major Sunrise properties will be airing in the same season if CODE GEASS gets it second series also announced for this fall.

We all keep forgetting that $unrise is the creator of Gundam anime, and this latest one.
I guess I need to remind you of the couple of fat otaku who added “onscreen sex with female” to Amuro during Gundam Seed; and created that “great protagonist shift” to Seed Destiny because of “”fan demand.””
I’ll also remind you that $unrise was responsible Mai-Otome’s happy couple of Akane and Kazuya being viciously separated by guys in hoods (that look freighteninly like the hoods the KKK wear).

Im little displease the character design of those 4 pilots is like a bunch of serious eyes punks faces. Its not quite enjoy to watch without girls. It similar to me like Gundam Wing just five of them against a whole army without any logistic support its too exaggerated.
Well Im looking forward in a new series: Devil May Cry(TV), Suzumiya Haruhi 2nd Season, Zero no Tsuikaima 2nd Season, True Tears, Otome wa Boku ni Koi Shiteru 2nd Season.

Are there any incomming seiyuus for this newtype Gundam series, My Wish is the Japanese Seiyuu who dubbed “Ichitaka Seto” from I”s Pure will be the seiyuu of the new main character

While it’s generally nice that the designers are targetting alternative audiences, as a girl I still have to say that the bishounen character designs are frankly kind of gratuitous and silly. Oh well, the art can still be redeemed as long as the story is good and not full of the emotional wangst and sucky characters that a ton of shoujo are prone to.
finally, a Gundam sires to be looking forward to, I loved seed, and I should love this too.

Whoa, so thats a gundam show!? Its finally come, I saw ur poll & just know about it. Well, im quite looking forward to it. That must be a battle between this show & Code Geass. (if Geass really air at this fall) But whatever, I’ll watch both of it. This 4 guys are quite bishies i admitted it but still I cant forget Seed looks. I know its nothing related to Seed but um…Im too affected by that show. It went deep inside my nerves, still up until now.

I just can’t understand why those booster packs on the gundams back are so damn funny shaped lol looks like that pointy thing that comes out of a turbine….well as for the seed series i was disapponted that it ended but hopefully i’ll be looking forward to their move (if they are really making one cause i haven’t seen trailers or anything). Well guys they jusct can’t stick to seed forever they have to change the story somehow. As for the character design I think its fairly a new design i’d call it and the pictures aren’t that abd. Hope this gundam 00 series won’t be boring.

Gundam 00…can’t wait for this series! Really hoped there’d be a girl Gundam pilot or so, but after watching the second trailer (30 second…youtube) I’m seeing what might be girls as commanders? Design of these characters looks cool too. I see theyre moving away from the outright younger style of characters that were abundant in SEED.
That being said, I loved SEED (not Destiny) but hopefully there will be some surpise Gundam pilots or MS pilots later who are girls :D. In any case, Gundam 00! Bring it on! (Code Geass S2 as well hopefully! I wish for same season so I’d have two amazing series to keep me happy :))

nanashiがあまりにも見苦しくほっといたら日本の恥になりそうなのでちょっと失礼します。
本来英語で書くべきだけどこれを英語で伝えるのは自分の語学力では無理そうなので
知ってのとおり日本のアニメってジャンルや展開から問わず色んな作品がありますよね？
日本は表現の自由が認められているので一方的な考えを押し付ける作品もあれば多角的に考えさせる作品や偏見に満ちた作品も当然あります。
ただガンダムという作品は象徴的なんですが
Ａという組織とＢという組織が敵対する場合
Ａは一方的に正義だけどＢは一方的に悪だ！っていう見方はないんですよ。
ＡにはＡの正義があるしＢにはＢの正義がある。
それぞれの立場から物語を作っていくのもまた物語の魅力なんですよ。
だからこれだけガンダムという作品は日本人に好かれているんだけども。
一度「主役だから正義」という考えではなく一歩ひいて公平な眼からみてこの作品を楽しむと多分かなり面白いと思います。
だから放映を待ちましょうｗ
*SEEDだけは例外 だから昔からのガンダムのファンはnanashiみたいにとにかく毛嫌いするんですが
いちいち自分の国がでたからって当てはめることはないです
日本人だって例えばエヴァとかみたいな日本が崩壊したりボロボロにされたりする作品あるけどいちいち気にせず楽しんでますよ。
海外で人気があるエルフェンリートは原作では日本の自衛隊は全滅してますからねｗ

just watched the first episode, its awesome, no yaoi, THANKFULLY. and it didn’t suck like SEED or Wing, It was awesome, and no HAX suits like in SEED.
I watched teh 1st ep. is interesting. hm, well, the guy characters arn’t gay for each other!! YAY. um…watch it its good, FMA director… If you want new UC, go buy an import dvd of the Zeta gundam movies.
i dont understand how anyone likes Gundam 00. Already 4 super powerful gundams come out of nowhere, all extraordinarily strong vs less than zaku equivalent mobile suits (huge clunky suits with fkin machine guns on their chin). I actually like the look of the clunky mobile suits and think it looks fkin cool but theres no balance, theres no real plot. There cant be a climax because one of the meisters just tore apart “the best pilot” from one of the factions in a second. In wing hiro simply couldnt kill zecks, there were things his super powerful gundam could not do, he killed tons of newbs but he had an equal. After seeing the best pilot lose in a second i cant see these gay meisters having an equal so there cant be a climax. Seed was amazing, intense, nice plot, balance – destiny was super strong but he wasnt the only super strong gundam either. This is one random group of people with a bit of money that somehow miraculously became 10x more advanced than huge governments, Gundam 00 sucks
my bad on that i meant freedom was amazing but had an equal. Gundam Seed Destiny just plainly sucked cock as an anime and nothing made sense, so many contradictions
i really dont under stand how you people like the character design…i mean….it just sucks, no offence but, out of the 4, only 1 looked “good” i mean like, that scarf guy…jus looked too feminine…and the guy with the curly hair reminded me of a pedo….and lastly, that purple haired girl/guy looked like its from “The Grudge”
lastly….i dont really like the new gundam looks….just not that…normal

Gundam 00 – Excellent, Setsuna really is quite the character. And i see no overpowering. So its fine.
Seed & Destiny sucked pure arse, it was patheticly lame. Im suprised i didnt quit seed after seeing the annoyance that is Kira. Destiny sucked due to them switching mains to that annoyance.
And Wing, wing was gold. Yes, gold. It was old and managed to keep its shine.
Finality, you’re retarded. How can a guy with a scarf look femenine? I dont even think you know what femenine means. The gundams were done alright, i only disliked the Phat one. The purple guy is what you were suppose to call femenine.
