「尚哉登場とゲーム会 PartII」 (Naoya Toujouu to Geemukai Part II)
“Introducing Naoya and The Gamers Meetup Part II”

Another fan-freaking-tastic episode of Wotakoi.

General Impressions

God, I love how subtle yet heavy-handed this show is when it comes to advancing Narumi and Hirotaka’s relationship. On one side you have all these subtle, non-verbal cues that quietly garner your attention as it tries to make a point. Be it Hirotaka glancing away when something catches him off guard or Narumi having some kind of internal struggle after thinking too hard (usually followed by a great Hirotaka follow up), the whole thing just feels “real”. And the thing is, even though each and every one of us can have a different definition for what’s “real”, I think most of us are getting are needs fulfilled here.

However, if the subtle stuff isn’t your thing, there’s also the heavy handed typically comedy filled situations that this show executes nearly flawlessly. This week being no exception to the rule, you have Kabakura and Hanako taking on the role of cranking things up to an eleven this week. That said, can you blame the two for being so suspicious when it came to someone possibly trying to steal Narumi from Hirotaka? I know I couldn’t, and even though I had this lingering feeling that Naoya was probably going to be an angel at heart, I personally would have behaved almost exactly like Kabakura. A friend has to have another friend’s back — even if that friend is as dense as a piece of plywood.

With this week’s episode taking on a bit of a serious tone, it makes sense that there weren’t as many opportunities for some of Wotakoi’s unique humor to spill out. Luckily we were graced with what may have been the funniest “warning there’s a normie here” scene I’ve ever seen. Anyways, all’s well that ends well and it’s nice to know that we have a backup character who can help ground all of our otaku’s to the real world just in-case things start to get out of hand. Hopefully we’ll get to see some more of Naoya in the future and hopefully he too will also discover something that can bring him closer to the Otaku world.

In any case, I’ll catch you guys next week where I can’t wait to see whatever crazy situations everyone gets into. See you then!

  1. Having already read the manga I knew Nao was just a really nice cute boy, but even when watching I agreed that Kabukura had reasons to be worried. He’s so nice that it’s easy to assume he has some ulterior motives (like when he happily offers to walk Narumi to the station). He’s such a good boy that he doesn’t fit with the rest of the weird cast – which actually is what makes him fit into the show. I love him.

  2. They actually improved upon the Thumb magic trick gag from the manga. In the manga it was just mentioned that Hirotaka was quite serious about never showing that trick again. In the anime, they exacerbate the pain Naoya felt when Narumi managed to get that trick out of her boyfriend again (this despite many years of begging by Naoya).
