Suzumiya Haruhi 2009 – Super Driver (New OP)

As expected, there was a new episode of Haruhi today, Endless Eight, and with it came a new OP: Super Driver by Hirano Aya. As you might know, I’m not a very big fan of hers when it comes to singing (bad memories of LOVE GUN still linger), and this didn’t really change my opinion any, but regardless of whether or not you like her music, the animation that goes with it still a fun watch.

The song isn’t that great, but I heard worse. The animation is pretty neat though, and (dare I say it?) quite original.

  • June 18, 2009 at 12:46 pmdood

Let the flood of massive group dances commence !

  • June 18, 2009 at 12:51 pmrai

lol Kyon has another Wtf am I doing here moment at the end.

  • June 18, 2009 at 12:57 pmbgsm

    At least there’s a new OP unlike last time.. o_o;;
But I’d have to agree with you, the song isn’t too great..

  • June 18, 2009 at 1:07 pmjaalin

one sex tape away from japanese paris hilton

  • June 18, 2009 at 1:12 pmMiss Y.

I’m not a biggestfan of Haruhi as a whole, but nevertheless, I love the western comics imaginary in this OP. The thing looks very cool and even the song matches.

  • June 18, 2009 at 1:12 pmfragbet

Doesn’t have the charm of the first OP. But its random and crazy enough, so it makes for a great Haruhi series.

  • June 18, 2009 at 1:15 pmMD

It’s not that bad, I think it’s pretty good song, and it fits the anime (the atmosphere, not the sci-fi stuffs).

  • June 18, 2009 at 1:16 pmJR

    Arcs listed chronologically:
    Bamboo Leaf
    Mysterique Sign
    Lone Island Syndrome
    Disappearance of Suzumiya Haruhi

With Lone Island Syndrome being ep10 and ep11, and ep12 being Endless Eight, does this mean they skipped the Disappearance arc and the whole of volume four? :<

It was *easily* the best one. Endless Eight wasn’t bad – will be interesting to see how they’ll portray Nagato as bored – but the Disappearance was just epic. Epic, I say.

  • June 18, 2009 at 1:17 pmMD

And I like the animation and original ideas of the OP ^^ (sorry for the double post, my hand is just to quick).

  • June 18, 2009 at 1:22 pmPhocus

If last season’s Hare Hare Yukai dance promoted otakus to dance in the streets, then maybe this season’s Super Driver will promote otakus to jog through the streets.

    Exercising ftw XD

Seeing the content of my physics classes in the new Haruhi OP ? Sweet… (last one had more Chemistry than Physics I think).

Anyway, I love it; quite catchy and upbeat, I could even dare to say it’s more catchy than the first one, but that’s a matter of opinion.

  • June 18, 2009 at 1:23 pmhjk

Song isn’t that great, but the animation was pretty good. What’s with the running in both the new OP and ED? I mean, I don’t mind it but why use it in both?

  • June 18, 2009 at 1:40 pmGundamaniac

Bouken Desho Desho was so much better……………..

  • June 18, 2009 at 1:44 pma

    Fan video > op video

  • June 18, 2009 at 1:47 pmsuguru

That OP was giving me flashbacks to the old Adam West Batman series…

  • June 18, 2009 at 1:54 pmShirachi

Way better than the first, which was just plain boring. I actually like the song.

  • June 18, 2009 at 2:07 pmNecoDelero

Endless Eight happens in summer, Disappearance in winter, so there’s pretty much a long time to go until then.

  • June 18, 2009 at 2:12 pmblinx01

    @ jaalin
LOL. She’s not that airheaded is she… oh, wait… haha

  • June 18, 2009 at 2:20 pmisayama yomi

wow, i found the op song already (Tv size of course)

I love the Kyon Face Palm

  • June 18, 2009 at 3:11 pmahbonk

omg Shamisen moved his head according to rhythm… reality-altering will of Haruhi ftw

  • June 18, 2009 at 3:17 pmSol

New song doesn’t have the charm of 1st season OP, but at least it is new, right? I’m happy enough with the new episodes anyway. The ED is great too.

  • June 18, 2009 at 3:24 pmKaioshin Sama

You can tell they’ve designed this one in a way that it is familiar to fans of eroge with it’s still imagery and colourful style (Kyoani has been doing the names under the character opening for a while now), but has just enough gimmicky movements that mimic dance (footaps, shoulder shrugs etc.) that niconico can still make parody vids out of it. In short it’s basically the K-On opening with less going on animation wise.

  • June 18, 2009 at 4:00 pmcbhl

Hmm… Initially I found this new OP to be a bit underwhelming… I wonder why?

On the other hand it feels like it would make for a good animation for those strange screen-tapping-to-the-music games you find on the Nintendo DS… >.>

  • June 18, 2009 at 4:38 pmrainnydaiis

I’m not to happy at all with the song either. I think she shouldn’t sing

  • June 18, 2009 at 4:51 pmLlora-chan

I like Aya Hirano, but there are some songs that she doesn’t sing well (including this one).

  • June 18, 2009 at 4:59 pmpenguintruth

I liked this one more than the first OP, but the first ED better than the new one. Aya Hirano is a fine singer, either way.

  • June 18, 2009 at 5:11 pmS

LOL. Aya has had her screw ups. *coughbikinicoughincident*

  • June 18, 2009 at 5:15 pmFeylin

Song totally does not match the show, song sucks, and the new OP is nowhere as great as the first OP.

  • June 18, 2009 at 5:51 pmMeery

There’s Kyon and Yuki in this video with some musical accompaniment. I must approve.

  • June 18, 2009 at 6:27 pmkureejii

…I liked the old opening better…But ok.

  • June 18, 2009 at 6:47 pmAwesome.

This is a reasonably good OP. There are a ton that say “Well, it’s not better than the original 1st OP”.

Hey, at least we have a 2nd Season.

The OP and EDs are good. Though may not be as super catchy and the dances aren’t apparent here.

    Still great nonetheless.

  • June 18, 2009 at 7:19 pmugly_1

i hope omni sumarizes the complete new haruhi series.

  • June 18, 2009 at 7:33 pmKaliayev

The new Haruhi movements consist of sprinting, lifting one’s arms nonchalantly, and shaking one’s head? That’s not very inspiring.

  • June 18, 2009 at 7:34 pmmb

If I had to listen to that song every time I watched an episode of the show then I don’t think I would bother.

  • June 18, 2009 at 7:52 pmCherubium

Gah half the time the music is alright, other times i just want to bash my head in the moniter.

  • June 18, 2009 at 8:30 pmmegalith

Ohhh… Sorry don’t like the OP. First season was way better both in animation and music.

I actually cringed when I heard the song. >:(

  • June 18, 2009 at 9:10 pmlialiakicks

Oh Kyon, how I love your voice…. <3333

But dude, this episode felt like a filler. Ah well. At least there was a new opening. :D

  • June 18, 2009 at 10:09 pmKaisos

Wow, there’s a lot of really angry people here.

Go fuck yourselves, angry people. Seriously. It’s just a fucking television show.

No need to take it so fucking seriously.

  • June 18, 2009 at 10:52 pmShebear

wait what…??!!! Love gun? as in the song by KISS?

  • June 19, 2009 at 12:30 amOmni

  • June 19, 2009 at 1:46 amMeery

Oh noes, despair. While my opinion is that this OP may not be as catchy as the original run’s, I think it’s better than many others aired recently. The comic-book styling is pretty cool. I don’t know what to think about this “dance,” though.

  • June 19, 2009 at 8:06 ammegalith

Ughhh… I still can’t make myself to love the OP…. Is it because of “No Dance” thing or the way she sang this song…. Really… WTF….

  • June 19, 2009 at 11:33 amzpi

seriously whats up with people and the want for a dance op/ed? it was never original to haruhi anyway…

  • June 19, 2009 at 5:40 pmvin-nii

I actually didn’t mind love gun (in fact I liked it). But this OP is inferior to desho desho

  • June 19, 2009 at 10:01 pmkm

I think you people should stop your ranting and whining, be happy there’s a 2nd season.

  • June 20, 2009 at 12:49 amA. A. Player

the ED sounds a lot better, this isnt so bad but not great thats all i can say :P

  • June 20, 2009 at 1:17 pmArglbargle

JR has his names wrong. The next arc is the Grief of Haruhi Suzimiya, then we get some old episodes and a filler episode, then we get the dissapearance, and then we get the last episode. (At least as I understand it)

  • June 20, 2009 at 4:28 pmKuro-rin

    OBEY! Haruhi-sama or ELSE!

  • June 21, 2009 at 5:27 amSr

    Кризис, и здесь бюджет урезали…

  • June 21, 2009 at 5:59 amnice

i don’t know why, but I like the total OP

  • June 22, 2009 at 3:01 amLollercoaster

Yet to find a better Aya Hirano song than god knows.

  • June 25, 2009 at 5:32 pmTigerfire

Ok, how can you not like Aya Hirano? Thats impossible! Shes the best seiyuu evar!

(sits back and watches start of flame war)

  • July 4, 2009 at 5:47 amD.Z.

That opening feels more like something you’d tack on a sitcom than an anime…

  • July 6, 2009 at 3:01 amKabi

NOt as good as the first OP, but a fun one anyway. And the mini-dance is fun too!
Not I’m not much of a fan of her music, I even bought her cd and the Haruhi concert to support, but some of the songs are just so… ugh. Especially some of the songs in the concert! She was waaaaay too flat FOR THE WHOLE SONG!?

  • July 20, 2009 at 4:50 pmTigerfire

Why do no bloggers like Aya-sama?

  • July 23, 2009 at 3:30 pmOcean

She’s just awful at singing. Like, she just sounds like she’s yelling.

  • August 12, 2009 at 8:18 amMoy

    I like the song. ;^^
