「お休みの日ととくべつドーナッツ」 (Oyasumi no Hi to Tokubetsu Doonattsu)
“Day Off and Special Donuts”

Even without touching on sappy things, this week’s episode of Amaama still tugged at my heart a lot harder than I expected it to.

New Characters

After her brief introduction last week, I was really hoping that Shinobu would get some of the spotlight to really show us who she is. Unfortunately, it looks like the writers have a different opinion than me and literally gave her a few minutes of time at best. Which I suppose isn’t necessarily a bad thing since they’ve painted Shinobu as Kotori’s good friend who probably helps keep Kotori grounded.

Then, as if the story wasn’t done playing around with my feelings, we got to meet another new character! With eyes fiercer than Shinobu from Re:Zero and a smooth smoking face just like Sanji, enter Yagi Yuusuke. Kouhei’s friend from high school and overall good guy, it was actually kind of fun watching him play around with Tsumugi. Taking her around and offering snacks like any good oji-san should be, it was nice to know that Kouhei actually has a friend who can help him out when he really needs it. That and even though he didn’t get much time on screen, it was pretty clear that he has a good heart and even though it looks like he’s a man of few words, he’ll speak up and follow along when the time calls for it.

Homemade Doughnuts

So, even though I ended up being totally wrong, I have to ask – was I the only one who thought the show was going to dive straight into some connection between Tsumugi feeling a little odd about doughnuts and Kouhei’s wife? It might feel like a bit of a stretch after you’ve watched the whole episode, but something about the way Kouhei responded after seeing Tsumugi’s reaction to doughnuts shot me straight in that direction. In the end though it didn’t really matter since there was still a super big heartwarming moment when Tsumugi decided just what doughnuts meant to her.

Looking Ahead

With the show moving ahead at a fine pace and the formula behind each episode changing little by little, I’m actually really surprised Amaama has managed to avoid giving us a stale episode. Then again, even with a premise as simple as cooking, there’s no denying that the additional elements of broken families and “growing” up as well as all the little things definitely spice things up. In any case, I can’t wait to see what else the show throws at us since there’s still a ton of episodes left for them to play with our fragile hearts as much as they want!

Catch you guys next week!

  1. I’m not sure how spoilery this is, but here it is anyway: both Shinobu and Yagi WILL get their place as part of the main group later in the season. And it will be glorious.

    1. My wife showed this to me, and I can see why she thinks it’s kind of adorable.

With that said, I found it fairly unsettling that she didn’t get a chill down her spine pertaining to the obvious student x teacher romance – we have a daughter, I reminded her. And we’ll soon have another God-willing. And granted, we’re not even thinking of putting them in public schools, but the idea of this possible “romance” was creeping me out.

    2. Well I guess it really depends on where you’re comin’ from. That kinda thing isn’t so looked down upon out in Far East Asia though it’s still kinda problematic when both individuals are currently in the same organization or institution.

  2. I also thought it has connection to tsumugi’s late mother.
Im really looking forward to this animes new episodes.
But i really do laugh out loud in the previous episodes
After they manage to do more efforts and acts still tsumugi really a wise cute girl. 😀

  3. I actually thought Yagi, given his hair color, was Tsumugi’s uncle and Kouhei’s brother-in-law on top of being his friend. I guess I was wrong there. I guess they don’t have Dunkin Donuts or Krispy Kreme in Japan. Tsumugi should know that there are cream filled donuts without holes too!
