「麗しき刃「亀鶴城メアリ」」 (Uruwashiki yaiba, Kikakujou Meari)
“The Fair Sword, Mary Kikakujo”

Pricks, dicks, and some fantastic references to mother in laws—welcome to Busou Shoujo. The show has certainly found a pace now three episodes in: angry girl picks fight, Nomura and girl have a throw down, Nomura wins, and another girl gets angry. Repeat the cycle. Yeah there’s some deviation from those guidelines, but all three fights thus far have stuck with the strategy. While potentially problematic over time, there is some ingenuity behind the scenes. The potential harem twist fits damn near perfectly, especially when we have resident tsundere duke it out with our tongue-tied French sadomasochist over who can watch the bad boy. There’s no guarantee all the future fights will end with love stricken maidens, but part of me secretly hopes it’s the case. You know, for science.

The interesting bit though lies with the Empress Amo and the first real development on her backstory. Probably no surprise she knows Nomura and thoroughly thrashed him previously, although her strength definitely is unexpected. While there’s room for Busou Shoujo to potentially play the trap card given Nomura’s gender confusion, I think this one will stay a girl—fits the show’s premise better considering Amo is now basically an end boss. Also have to give purpose to those not so subtle butterflies fluttering around her Highness’ chest; cannot deny the harem its sacrifices. The curiosity for me, however, is how Amo’s role will play out. Seeing how she crushed both Mary and Rin effortlessly, there’s room for the Five Swords—if only a few—to come around to Nomura’s side for revenge on the Empress. Rin and Mary are guarantees given that flashback, but they first have to settle on the division of Nomura, which from all accounts won’t be an easy negotiation. Couple that with dick shell shocked Choka who won’t be happy with big sister and Rin’s junior detective and the whole misanthrope monolith suddenly possesses some dividing lines. If Busou Shoujo actually morphs into a Five Swords free for all with Nomura at the centre I’ll be seriously impressed. Can never go wrong with a little more battle variety.

Where we immediately go from here, however, is anyone’s guess. Mary has been firmly ravished—if not in her desired manner—and now Nomura has two lovely ladies watching his every move. Well, almost every move. There’s no question Five Swords round three is an inevitability, although the lucky candidate has yet to appear. Personally I’m guessing Tsukuyo will be the next fight just because of her scene time, but how she winds up confronting Nomura is the wild card. Needless to say Busou Shoujo has won me over and I’m definitely covering this one through. It may not be the best show on tap, but damn does it ever meet the guilty pleasure standards.

  1. Oh look. The first capable male delinquent that comes by their way and the Swords instantly trip over themselves like lovestruck maidens.

God damn it. This is why you don’t turn a school filled with cute sheltered young women into a correctional facility.
