OP1.10 Sequence

OP: 「全力☆Summer!」 (“Zenryoku☆Summer!) by angela

「ドライブ! アホガール」 (Drive! Aho Girl)
“Drive! Aho Girl”

This was another fun episode of seeing Akane warm up to Yoshiko as she tries to pierce her own ears while her mind races everywhere in fear. It was cute to see Akane lowering her guard for a second as Yoshiko tries to calm her down, even though she tried scaring her beforehand about the procedure being the worst pain she could ever imagine. The heavy focus on Akane is making her a lot more likable since we have been learning that she’s not as rough around the edges as she seems, but it helps a lot that she’s still funny to follow as an outgoing girl who secretly hopes Yoshiko can help her goof off and relax so she can look charismatic enough to find a boyfriend.

It was also funny to learn that the rivalry between the Public Morals girl and Yoshie wasn’t a one-off since they continue where they left off now that Yoshie notices she’s trying to win over Akuru’s little sister. From then on, it becomes an intense battle for the Public Morals girl as she fights to keep her dignity while Yoshie uses her stealth attacks to try and strip her of her panties. The whole battle was a hilarious game of wits as they evoke the Jotaro/Dio fight with enough lightning-quick movements that slow down time and muda’s to spare. The “Beware of Perverts” sign was a nice touch for the backdrop of the scene with the lengths the Public Morals girl would do to save face, even if it means stealing Ruri’s panties, and Yoshie’s desperation to humiliate her to ensure the path is still on course for Yoshiko to be with Akuru.

Admittedly, there isn’t as much to write about this week for Aho Girl since many of the other segments placed more emphasis on comedy. The race was a humorous skit where Yoshiko taking her dog out on a walk turned into an Initial D-style race with a motorcyclist who is horrified with how much quicker her dog is than his bike. The action figure scene with the playground kids was funny too with Yoshiko taking it too far as she creates scenarios too problematic for the kids to process. Thanks to Yoshiko’s imagination, Micca and Michael were able to get together in the end, but not before Micca tried to get revenge on Godzilla only for the monster to unintentionally strip her of her clothes and reject her offer for him to use her body how ever he wished. Between this and Public Morals girl stealing Ruri’s panties, there was a lot of depravity to go around this episode, but one of Aho Girl‘s best strengths is seeing how far the characters are willing to go to satisfy the id that drives their impulsive behavior.

I was already hearing Initial D‘s signature Eurobeat music in my head as soon as that segment started. (“No One Sleep In Tokyo”, a.k.a.: the “Inertia drift?!” scene music.) The eyecatch in the vein of the anime’s First Stage was a nice touch too. And to a certain extent, as soon as I heard the first few notes of Bach’s “Toccata and Fugue in D minor” in the Micca and Michael segment, I couldn’t help but hum “Back On The Rocks” (Takeshi Nakazato’s leitmotif and the unofficial theme song of the Nissan Skyline GT-R in the show).

Akane’s well and thoroughly trapped in Yoshiko’s pace now…
