Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card Hen – 17

「さくらとおかしなお菓子」 (Sakura to Okashina Okashi)
“Sakura and the Crazy Sweets”

A surprisingly fun episode with the reveal that we’ve been waiting ages for.

General Impressions

It only took 17 episodes to get here, but the plot has finally decided to advance forward toward something! And as sarcastic as that might sound, I’m genuinely excited to see that we’re finally getting closer to whatever climax Clear Card can muster. Because after almost two-cours, I’m sure we’re all getting a little tired of watching Sakura do the same thing day-in and day-out without really progressing anywhere.

However, before we dive into that, let’s talk a little bit about this week’s ridiculous Card capture. And by ridiculous, I mean pretty cool since this week’s card put up a pretty darn good fight. Seriously, when was the last time you saw a bunch of rollcakes combine into a single giant sugary monster? All jokes aside, I thought the capture overall was a pretty fun watch since it looks like these cards are caring less and less about just how disruptive they’re being and Sakura ends up in pretty interesting situations because of that.

That said, let’s dive into the really juicy part about this week’s episode — Kaito. Ever since we first met the guy, I’ve always felt a little iffy about him. Besides being too perfect as a butler, the show would always pan away as it drew our eyes to some real ominous shadows surrounding his eyes and for a show like this one, it’s pretty obvious what the show runners are trying to say. The thing about all of this that’s really irking me though is that we still don’t know what Kaito’s true intentions are. Based off of the way he treats Akiho and his rather blunt comments to Momo as he unleashed some magic, it definitely feels like there’s something going on beneath the surface. The problem being we don’t know exactly what’s going on and why it involved Sakura and the creation of all these new cards.

All in all not too bad of an episode that’s starting to set us up for things to come. Hopefully we’ll finally get some true answers since things seem to be ramping up rather quickly. In any case I’ll catch you guys next week where it looks like Touya and Yue will get another chance to have some deep talks with each other. See you then!

I would like to see Sakura grow into a true magician. It’s like how she put the cards away and didn’t use them after she captured them. I dislike the whole ‘magical girl just wants to be normal’ routine. She has so many people in her life accepting of magic, knowing real magic not just cards passed down from another magician. I wish there was more strife involved in losing all the cards which had essentially become her friends, but then it seemed like she had more or less abandoned them anyway.

I dislike the appearance of a competing “magical girl” but I’m unsure of where we’re going with the butler thing. I would like for Sakura to come out of this with a real desire to explore her heritage and her true magic with a respect for who she is as a normal person but also as a magician.

I like and dislike how Japanese cakes are so cute.
You like their cute artistry, but dislike how difficult it is to eat and destroy something of such cuteness.

Kaito seems to be a new masters type character (like Sakura and Clow Reed/Eriol). While Momo is like the Sun servant (Kero and Spinel). Maybe Akiho is like the Moon servant (Yue and Ruby).

I’m not sure what to think – Akiho is meant as a substitute for Sakura? It’s obvious Kaito is trying to steal all the Clear Cards as soon as Sakura gets them all again.

But the bunny and the butler are using Akiho, not helping her. Unless Akiho is dying of some kind of disease only the Clear cards can cure. Which I doubt.

Well, Kaito did say something about Akiho’s time running out, so I’m almost beginning to think that he isn’t a bad person as such. But even if that’s true, he’s acting solely for Akiho’s benefit irrespective of the implications for other people, especially Sakura.

Perhaps I missed something but I don’t remember any other plushy speaking voluntarily besides Kero. I’m thinking this the only scene where the “wabbit” actually spoke?

“Because after almost two-cours, I’m sure we’re all getting a little tired of watching Sakura do the same thing day-in and day-out without really progressing anywhere.” if you get that impression and get anxious about it, even when is a weekly chapter, imagine for ones that’re reading the monthly manga, where there isn’t much to say right now. but perhaps yeah, is all a set up for a climax or revelations, who knos

Someone else noticed that Rika is going to the same school Fuu of Magi Knight Rayearth goes? O.O

Kaito is somehow holding some secondary personality of Akiho with his “D” power. Clocks crumble when Sakura understands who the white figure is looking at her.

This seriousness now has a great deal of mysteries. Clamp really changed after xxxHolic and Tsubasa. In the manga somehow Sakura sees the spirit of her mother, but not in the anime.

Rectification: “This series now has a high load of mysteries.”
