Here is it – your erotic fantasies come true. Starting with a bathroom scene that is bound to induce waves of nosebleeds, the second episode of Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Bride was pretty much wire-to-wire hilarity from beginning to end. For the first three minutes, the show featured nothing but a bounty of nude females, taking part in what I presumed to be normal bathing activities – splashing, rubbing, jiggling and hugging. Hyakka Ryouran is many things, but subtle has never been one of them. There’s something to be said about fanservice that is so unapologetic and more so than ever, this episode doesn’t pretend to be anything else but that. Everything seems like an excuse to put the fanservice on steroids, and no question, it was ridiculous, oversexed and above all, fun.

The episode was filled with great gags and pretty much everyone gets their time in the spotlight. It all started when a Happosai-like pantsu thief appears out of nowhere and sends the samurai girls on a quest to hunt down the pervert. As usual, Muneakira was dragged into his harem’s absurdities and the non-stop bickering that ensued between Sen Hime and Yukimura had me laughing out loud. There are several jokes that manage to draw a chuckle of two out of me, but two gags in particular stood out. The first one – Yukimura engaging in a preposterous fantasy about Muneakira lusting over her mature figure (you wish!) – succeeded in leaving a silly grin on my face, but it was the second one – the sight of Matabe sniffing Yukimura’s crotch to trace the scent of the thief – that inspired fits of laughter in me. I knew from the preview a brand new Master Samurai might appear, but I was nowhere close to figuring out her identity. It turns out she’s Sasuke (Akasaki Chinatsu) and yes, she is indeed a monkey. An accidental lip lock cemented her status as the monkey-girl Master Samurai, Sarutobi Sasuke and not only did she fill the animal girl stereotype, she also became the star attraction of their meido kissa. Everything about our furry friend is a blast, starting with the fact that she takes great joy in making fun of Kanetsugu and no doubt, Sasuke has proven to be a great addition to Muneakira’s ever-growing harem.

It’s safe to say Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Bride has delivered on every level. Everything I love about the show is in tip-top condition, and some have even shifted to a higher gear this week. The character development, verbal banter and the sight gags were spot-on, but the profuse fanservice definitely takes the cake as the most memorable part of this episode. Now that we have Sasuke on board, things are certainly heating up in every way and I can’t wait to see what kind of madness she brings to the table, aside from the obvious tendency to steal pantsu.

I like this fanservice due to the fact that it doesn’t portray the girls as sluts as certain other shows *ahem* Highschool DxD…seriously, their fanservice is sleezy *ahem* But I think the biggest twist with Sasuke is that everyone who saw her in the PV thought she was a cat girl…well she’s a monkey girl. Plus she’s a good addition to the team because she’ll apparently make up for the lack of superspeed the team has, as she’s hinted to go up against that one Dark Samurai who states she’s faster than Senhime

      I can’t remember when was the last time I saw a monkey girl. Cat girls and fox girls are pretty common in anime these days.

  18. Borderline, man, borderline.

    I get a little uncomfortable when nudity starts flying in fast and hard, but thankfully the humor is entertaining enough for me to regain some of the comfort I had when watching the first season.

    Comparisons aside, what seems a potentially nonsensical episode was actually pretty fun. You would think a monkey who steals underwear would actually be a male, but turns out to be a female (and a cute one to boot). Good job on breaking that illusion there.

    When will the Warrior of Love ever get her day? XD

  19. LOL – just when you thought the first episode’s fan service was abundant…wow. One of the most ecchi/fanservice episodes I’ve seen in quite a while – and I watched Hagura Yuusha, Dakara Boku wa H ga Dekinai along with HS DxD, Hyakka’s 1st season, etc.

    Perhaps alone on this, but I wasn’t a fan of the monkey -> master samurai transformation. Seems to me like a pretty forced way to get an XXX-mimi character into the show. Why stop there? Might as well have a couple of nekomimi and inumimi master samurais and you can just overwhelm the “dark” samurai’s with numbers.

    Overall, I thought it was a decent episode with some funny moments driven by the ecchi theme (ex. Matabe). As I posted previously, I’d rather an ecchi show stay true to it’s genre than be somewhat half-hearted about it (e.g. Senran). However, with the ecchi theme so predominant in this episode (borderline IMO as well), I’m starting to wonder whether that will be the trend for the rest of the season with the plot/story pushed into the background. JMO, but I’d like some better balance and focus.
