“Goodbye Girl (Yamada)”
Another Yamada Episode!:
Another Yamada episode? Yes please. Honestly, I’m feeling spoiled right now. As a fan, I’m over the moon with the direction and focus of this final season of WORKING!!!, but then I also remember that the reason why I’m loving all these loose ends getting tied up is because the end is coming. We’re just over half way through the season until there’s no more WORKING!!! left, and that depresses me. But thankfully, just like last wee,k we got plenty of Yamada-focus which makes me very, very happy.
We have plenty of funny moments here, from Yamada living with the Takanashi family, to her workmates pushing her out the door, to her idiotic brother. But for all the moments of comedy, there were also hints of a darker, more serious backstory. When Yamada started telling her story, you could feel the atmosphere change, as we learned about her dad passing away and her mother forcing her to study a mountain of textbooks. Yamada is a good storyteller it that regard, because right up until the ‘reason’ for her running away, I was sold on this rather tragic backstory (much like Souta and Nazuna). But once we find out she left because her brother ate her natto, I couldn’t help but laugh. It was made even funniest that Souta and Nazuna still felt for despite her shoddy reasons. One thing is for sure, however: she makes a good house pet, Yamada does.
As far the other serious moments go, the reunion of mother and daughter was a pretty big one. Souta’s attempts at holding a conversation kept it light enough, but it was all building up to a lovely motherly hug. The fact that she actually has a manual to operate/understand her was another hilarious insert, and I definitely want to see more of that in the next few episodes. And just like that, with Yamada and her mother being reunited, we also have Otoo and his wife. Honestly, I expected an entire episode dedicated to them two, but they were tagged on here at the very end. I would have liked more focus on them before they were together again, but perhaps next episode will shed some light on that. As a whole, this was another strong Yamada-centric episode, and sadly, it’s likely to be the last. I just don’t want her to leave altogether! Let her keep the job, no matter how terrible she is at it… please!
Overview – What’s Next?:
It’s been a while since WORKING!!! has got this serious. As I’ve said before, this season is much more intent on resolving the long-standing plot threads that have been teased over the past two seasons. It’s great to have these resolutions and character arcs feeling complete, even in a situational comedy like WORKING!!! I really liked this episode, but if it’s the beginning of the end of Yamada’s screen time, I’m afraid I’ll be rather disappointed. But I’ll remain hopefully for now, because this season has continued to impress me with each passing episode, and I can’t see that changing now.
