「新たなるドラゴン、エルマ!(やっと出てきましたか)」 (Aratanaru Doragon, Eruma! (Yatto Detekimashitaka))
“New Dragon, Elma! (She’s Finally Appearing, Huh?) “

This week’s episode did a great job at showing us all the things that make Maid Dragon a good show. Between giving us some perfect Kanna shots to really highlighting just how close Kobayashi and Tooru have become, I don’t think we could have really asked for more.

Friendly Competition

After watching last week’s preview, I was really curious just what triggered Kobayashi to get into a fight with Tooru. Seeing how the former is typically ready to take a nap at a moments notice and has to actively tell everyone else to take it down a notch (or ten), it was actually really fun to see Kobayashi finally leap into action this week! Drawing from her knowledge of everyday life in Japan, it was definitely a bit of a shocker to see her hold her own against the powerhouse known as Tooru. But as surprising as that was, I think what may have even been more surprising was either the way Kobayashi stood her ground against Fafnir or possibly just how much softer Fafnir’s opinions of humans have become.

A New Face!

While it wasn’t the exact character I was hoping we’d meet, it’s nice to finally meet a dragon that seems to be a bit more on Kobayashi’s level when it comes to living in the human world. And even if Elma required a little bit of training to get up-to-speed with things, it’s comforting to know that she’s able to fend for her own unlike some other older dragons out there.

But, even if you disregard everything I just said, another huge selling point about Elma is it looks like we may finally have a worth competitor for Kanna when it comes to being disgustingly cute. And while she may not have that extra edge when it comes to being tiny and adorable, there’s definitely some charm in seeing a slightly older and taller dragon doing cute things.

Some Housekeeping and Looking Ahead

Man, can this show do no wrong? At this point I don’t really have much to say except I hope we keep getting this kind of quality content until the end of the season. And with every indicator pointing in the right direction, I doubt there’s anything to really be concerned about.

Also, I just wanted to take a second to apologize for the slightly later posts. I’ve been getting used to the transition to a new area because of work but I’m going to try my best to get posts out at their usual times.

In any case, I’ll catch you guys next week. See you!

  1. I loved how KyoAni totally ratcheted up Elma’s kawaii factor by 3x. Cute dragons doing cute things (CDDCT)? I’m in.

In any case, this was again another solid episode. I just hope that the chapters that were skipped eventually get animated either as OVAs or best case, another season.

  2. kanna looks so cute sitting there and charging through the electric outlet
i can’t wait to see how expensive kobayashi’s electric bill will be rofl
as for tooru’s tail meat sandwich, i love to eat it everyday

It’s also interesting to see the A Silent Voice tag team of Naoko Yamada and Futoshi Nishiya at it again with this episode.

On an unrelated note, I’ve caught up with the manga and…

  4. I just realized the author is the same as Danna ga Nani wo Itteiru ka Wakaranai Ken and komori-san. and then i kind of love some of his other work but then i saw his other stuff and i was like…really?

      1. I don’t think we can safely assume that. Most of their recent shows that received sequels or films were based on light novels that they distributed and published (i.e. own). Kobayashi-san chi no Maid Dragon, like Hyouka, Nichijou and Amagi Brilliant Park, is not owned by Kyoto Animation. Granted, Hibike! Euphonium did get a sequel and a summary film, but it really depends on sales and the decisions made by the production committee.

It feels like the anime is covering most of what is already released from the manga, so there probably will not be enough material for there to be a sequel immediately. They’ve already covered 26 of the 48 available chapters include next week’s episode, and they adapt chapters from 1-4 chapters per episode. They did adapt K-On! with majority of the animated content being anime original (movie inclusive), but with Maid Dragon, it’s largely faithful to the manga, save for the alterations to the sequences of events presented to the viewer/reader.
