Sword Art Online: Alicization – 03

「果ての山脈」 (Hate no Samyaku)
“Endless Mountain”

Even as slow as this episode was, I was still double checking the timestamp frequently in fear that the episode was going to end.

General Impressions

Boy, am I excited for things next week. However this week isn’t next week so let’s continue to talk about all the setup that this week’s episode did.

Based on everything that we’ve seen and all that we’ve heard from Eugeo as he’s explained the Underworld to Kirito, I’m surprised that there are still so many questions that both I (and presumably Kirito) still have. As a virtual world that has both game elements and hyper-advanced artificial arclight intelligence deeply integrated into it, we still have absolutely no idea why it exists the way it does. What we do know is that it’s a new type of technology that has connections to Kirito’s governmental contact — which would make you question what purpose arclight technology has to some of the most powerful people in the country. Toss in that artificial arclight intelligence has an obvious “governor” built into it to prevent it from breaking the rules and it all sounds like that the Underworld might be a place to create, test, and reiterate on this new form of artificial intelligence. If I were to use a real life example to compare it to, it sounds a lot like how the neural networks we use right now work. Which, if that were the case, means the possibility of anomalies is totally possible.

I bring up anomalies since there’s absolutely no reason the first episode would have put so much emphasis on Eugeo’s eye when he tried breaking protocol. Akin to another anime that has its characters in a similar world, I’m really hoping that we get a proper arc for Eugeo that dives into him becoming a truly unique character in a world full of advanced artificial intelligence that are bound to a particular set of rules.

Anyways, after all that’s said and done, it looks like next week is going to be a fantastic one. With a big climax on the way, I can’t wait to see just what happens during Kirito and Eugeo’s first real battle. Hopefully, and I mean this in the best way possible, we’ll get to see both of them kick ass and look cool while doing it.

See you guys next week!

They should just kiss and make up.

Goblins seem to be getting a lot of screen time this season…

Yes, it seems so. If you include Overlord from last season, the current score is good goblins 2, bad goblins 2.

Overlord doesn’t really affect scores as it has two types of Goblins: Enri’s Goblins (created by that item Ainz gave her) which are nice and chill guys, and the native New World Goblins that are stereotypically evil.

Eh I wouldn’t say that. In Overlord even the native Goblins are clearly shown to be capable of peaceful coexistence. Remember Agu and the survivors of his tribe? Heck even random Ogres were made civilized with the right leadership. They are more like another sentient species etc. In Goblin Slayers the Goblins are literally parasites upon mankind and diametrically opposed to them. Unlike the Goblins in say Overlord, they have base instincts that pull them to do terrible things.

    It’s fluctlight by the way.

This show is trash. From the little girl nonsense from last season to this slow paced garbage, sword art has really lost what made it so engaging. Its very sad

As far as there is no Asuna it is good.

      • October 22, 2018 at 11:00 amyoloalchemist

Mother’s Rosario felt good to me, honestly.

If you dislike Asuna, you’re going to hate the second half of this adaptation LOL.

It’s too soon to know how this season will turn out. Personally I enjoy all SAO & GGO also Mother’s Rosario wasn’t nonsense. Just because certain arcs of the greater story didn’t appeal to every audience doesn’t mean it’s nonsense.

I actually quite like this series because I play the SAOIF game and seeing Eugeo and Alice for the first time in full technicolor compared to the manga is quite an upgrade plus how the art style was formed looks amazing.

So then, did the durability of that stupid tree go down significantly? I couldn’t notice.
And speaking of anomalies, Eugeo’s hesitation feels unnatural. Is it an anomaly, or is it something that was put upon him as a curse (read: programmed)?

    • October 22, 2018 at 1:21 pmBob

It went down by 1 in one hit instead of in hundreds of hits like it usually takes. The Blue Rose Sword is strong.

    • October 22, 2018 at 1:22 pmBob

As for Eugeo that should be revealed soon.

“which would make you question what purpose arclight technology has to some of the most powerful people in the country.”

It didn’t make me wonder that… governments fund plenty of things that don’t benefit politicians. (Grants are like that.) But now I’m certainly wondering about it.

More like a bug in his programming. Something that Kirito is determined to fix.

  • October 22, 2018 at 1:23 pmBob

Looks like Kirito, Eugeo, and Selka are in trouble. If only there was some sort of hero they could call on; someone with the proper armor and arms to deal with this horde of goblins. Some sort of… Goblin Exterminator or something.

    • October 22, 2018 at 2:41 pmRenaSayers

One that is battle hardened with memories of a dead older sister.

    • October 23, 2018 at 4:57 pmRictek

maybe a dedicated slayer of that kind of monsters

    • October 24, 2018 at 3:43 amMikasa

      Levi can do the job.

  • October 24, 2018 at 11:52 amExukvera

Watching this season of SAO makes me cry for all the other series with good plot and characters that were butchered due to time constraints and banished to oblivion.
