「楽しそうだね」 (Tanoshisoudane)
“Looks Like You’re Having Fun”

This episode was one big giant oof.

General Impressions

Boy, it’s been a while since we’ve seen a big conflict in Fruits Basket. Thinking back, I think the biggest one was Tohru almost spending her first new years without her mom alone. A situation that, in the moment, caused two other important characters to do something that they’d eventually have to atone for. I’m sure we all figured that Yuki and Kyo would have to face Akito eventually, but who would have thought that he’d bring the showdown to them?

As far as first appearances go, boy does Akito understand how to be a giant asshat. The young head of the entire Soma household, there was something just disgusting with how big of a smile he was feigning in-front of Tohru. Add in how he actually loathes her and thinks she’s too stupid to “take” Yuki away from him and I wouldn’t blame you if your fist accidentally entered your monitor. That said, if you were to look at him as the main baddie of the story, he did a great job at living up to the title. His wickedly evil smile combined with the way he holds himself above Yuki could probably send shivers into the most confident of people.

Luckily, Tohru has something that you just don’t see in most people. Something that’s able to make your heart skip a beat while simultaneously making you want to take hold of the girl looking right at you. That something my friends, is the power of unconditional love that isn’t corrupted with any kind of ulterior motives or schemes. It’s tough for me to put it in words without sounding corny, but I’m sure you can refer to how Yuki and Haru were at the end of the episode to understand what I’m talking about.

At the end of the day, we didn’t really learn all that much except just how big of a dick Akito is and was to Yuki (and most likely a lot of other Somas). However, it looks like that whatever Shigure is concocting behind the scenes is slowly making progress and we’ll hopefully be able to see just whatever it is he has planned for the one person who’s standing in-between him and his dreams. That and here’s to the off chance we get to see someone express their true feelings for Tohru without getting caught up in some ridiculous anime trope.

In any case, I’ll catch you guys next week. See you then!

  1. I checked my watch and it turns out the comedic antics in the school lasted for like 12 minutes! :O No wonder it seemed like this episode went by in a flash!

    I wanna punch Akito.

  2. Absolutely loved this episode. Akito was terrifying and the comedic exchange beforehand was wonderful. I love Haru’s mindset for how people can and “should” dress, I love Fruits Basket acknowledging sex as a part of these teenage characters’ lives, and I was positively trembling with the terror Akito inflicted on every with presence alone.

The way Yuki reacted just broke my heart all over again and the pieces were in my throat when Tohru shoved Akito in a desperate attempt to protect him.

  3. Tohru shoving Akito was incredible. The girl’s unwavering mission to heal these poor battered bishies never fails to get me choked up. Also even this many years later Haru’s pubes gag still makes me die of laughter.
