「帰りましょう」 (Kaerimashou)
“Let’s Go Home”

Well that escalated quickly.

General Impressions

I’ve been dying to know what’s going on with Kyo and boy did this week’s episode deliver on that. Ignoring any previous knowledge from the original series (partially because I can’t remember all that much of it), who would have thought that Kyo’s rosary was the object that was keeping the cat spirit inside of him from popping out?

Anyways, I don’t think I was ready for this week’s episode. Looking back on it, Kyo has always been a rather hotheaded guy who was ready to knock you out at the drop of a hat. But underneath that tough exterior of his, there’s always been a glimmer of this simple guy who just wanted to be with others. Looking at Kyo’s past, it’s not hard to see why he behaves the way he does. Ostracized by the Somas, stuck in a vicious cycle of hate with Yuki with things outside of their control, and living with the knowledge that his mother was afraid to truly look at him, it’s actually more surprising that Kyo has even made it this far.

However, even with the universe constantly working against him, you have to love how he’s stuck to being himself and in turn managed to find hope and salvation within the arms of someone who truly understands what he needs. Because at the end of the day, what Kyo needed wasn’t love but rather someone who was willing to try and understand him and provide a different type of empathy that only comes from looking at fear straight in the eye BECAUSE of the love you have for them.

Man, what an episode. It’s been a long time coming and I absolutely loved how this week’s episode executed everything. From all the hints that were being dropped along the way to the darker conversations that were only heard because we got to see what was going on off screen, I don’t think we could have asked for a better episode. From this point though, I can’t wait to see how the dynamic at Shigure’s household changes. I personally hope for things will get livelier with Kyo opening up a bit more and maybe figuring out his differences with Yuki. In any case, see you guys next week!

  1. I actually just finished watching this episode and the waterworks… can’t stop them.
Just love this finale so, so much. What’s different is there’s no filler and that makes it so clear-cut with Kyo’s life story. The true meaning of unconditional love. Fruits Basket has done it again.

  2. It might sound crazy, but I literally watched this episode 5 times this weekend…each time telling myself “OK… this time you’re not going to cry.” The 5th time I finally managed to make it though without grabbing tissues. (These were all random times of the weekend…not one right after the other.) What a poignant, heartfelt episode. Tohru is such wonderful person. This World needs more people like her.

  3. I don’t’ know.. I though the episode was good but if you think about it, the episodes leading into this one did not really lead us into Kyo or Yuki. I felt the order of the episodes was unfair, because for a few episodes no Kyo or Yuki, and then suddenly this episode, and then SUDDENLY the story. I think the paces are off, no matter how beautiful this was. I dk, I did not feel it, maybe I should rewatch it..

  4. I love the ep, I really did, but imo the old series did it much better, though they also mixed in original ending with so screw it…

What it did better however was that it took Toru at least additional episode to build the courage to face Kyo after being consulted by her friends when she run to her mother’s grave,

Kyo’s monster form was handled better at the old anime since they leaved a lot to our mind (no.1 basic of horror is to leave stuff to our minds) by cover it with shadows or closeup angles most of the times, and leaved the transformation sequence out (which again, leave most people to think in paranoid way how he looks like in their minds),

At some point Yuki also join Toru and help her confront Kyo, there it was Yuki who got injured mostly over Toru which make Wayyyyy more sense, after they were able claim him down the anime went with the original ending route were Toru also have to face the head of the family (who in the old adaption also was the one who ordered Kyo’s teacher to take his rosary off in order to scared Toru, he also came personally to insult Toru when she was waiting few seconds next to the tree till dog guy (forgot his name) came out to stop him (Dog guy was really more comical and good guy in the old series, yeah))

All of these things made for a better finale for the first season imo, even if you take the original head family ending out, they just build it up there better.
