“No-reel Fishing”

This week’s Houkago Teibou Nisshi puts a new spin on fishing for horse mackerel as Hina tries her hand at fishing without using a reel. While she discovers new things about fishing, there are still some hurdles that can be difficult to leap over.

It was nice to get a better glimpse at Yuuki acting as a mentor for Hina. We’ve only got it in bits and pieces since the first episode, but this time around, Yuuki steers her towards trying to catch fish using the method of using a fishing pole without a reel. While she only catches an array of smaller fish in the morning and afternoon, Yuuki is persistent as it was part of her plan to get Hina comfortable and happy enough with not needing a reel to hook in a mackerel.
At the same time, she hasn’t quite gotten the fish-gutting part down. No matter how many times she tries to use the knitted fish she created to get her used to the idea, she was completely out-of-her-depth on handling having to butcher a larger fish like a horse mackerel. It was funny to see how much of a burden it was when she accidentally pulled most of the fish’s head off and how insanely bloody it got.

But all’s well that ends well since Sayaka came through with the smoker. It’s interesting to know that she is enough of an enthusiast that she is familiar with using it to smoke meats and cheeses. But it was a fun factoid to learn about smoking food in a fishing anime, especially since it’s a friendly reminder that smoked fish is pretty great.
