「教会雷撃」 (Kyoukai Raigeki)
“Storm the Church”

Well I’m sure this is one ending in progress few didn’t see coming. Delusions of grandeur? Big giant monsters? Diablo doing what he does best? All there and then some. Probably didn’t see pint sized goddesses make the most of bodily functions coming of course, but then again it just isn’t a proper conclusion without a surprise or three.

Although Diablo gets top marks this week for yet another plan which fails its way to success (someone forgot who the real god here is apparently), the real winner for me has to be Horn. I’m on record for loving this bunny girl, but damn, stop hitting me where it hurts. Seriously. Whether or not it’s down to Horn’s VA and that adorable tomboy-esque voice (and to be honest, it mostly is), her bubbly and ever so slightly naïve expressions and actions are a nice match for Rem’s pure tsundere-isms, Shera’s blatant vivaciousness, and Rose’s newly engrained sense of smug superiority. Whipping out the slave-lite collar at the first hint of failure might be a bit bothersome given what Babylon is capable of – what, cannot simply cut a finger and donate some proper blood to the sparkling gyaru goddess? – but we all know how Diablo will treat that in practice. Never underestimate the power of moxie, especially when surrounded by girls.

Speaking of moxie, no real shocker in how things have turned out. The church looking to usurp God by utilizing a more down to earth god? Just another day in fantasyland, albeit I had my bets on tamed dragon over eldritch monstrosity. At least Diablo makes up for such surprises with his improv theatrics which not only meet the weekly confidence building requirements (he’ll get over the embarrassment eventually), but also fill out the irony requirements courtesy of not filling in Lumachina on such matters beforehand. Yes, embracing the inner demon lord can help grease the gears, but Diablo will have to realize at some point that not all bluffs will work, especially when they require the participation of those without a twisted bone in their body. While Vishos might save on him making the hard decisions here, at some point Diablo will be confronted with a harsh dilemma and have to make a difficult choice no amount of demon lording will get him out of.

Won’t happen next week of course, but you never know what foreshadowing this season’s finale might bring.

  1. Whether or not it’s down to Horn’s VA …

    Yes!
This is why I never watch an English dub’d foreign media anything (if I can help it),
especially Japanese Anime. The VA makes all of the difference in the story, and these
    VA’s are no exception.

another plan which fails its way to success …

    Yup, that nails it!
Seems like the series is finding its stride — can’t wait for the last arc!

    1. Oh, sometimes there are also English VAs or other Language ones, that can also hit the Point with Emotions… It’s just hard to find them, yes. But they exists

    2. Do not compare the Light God of the Church here with the Real Life God of Catholics. They are not the same. The Proof was in the Treasure Chamber where the Holy Item healed our Head Priest from the Illness. It was an Bull Statue, and this is not the Catholic God. Because when Moses came down the Mountain after some Days, he saw his followers dancing around an Golden Bull, and this was their old God. In Anger of that, Moses smashed the ten Combatant on the ground… the rest is Old testament Biblical History

So, this Fantasy World have their own Light God.

  2. Agreed on Horn. I like all the characters in Diablo’s group, so it was nice to see some focus on horn this episode since I recall they skipped the holy grail scene and left it for this episode. Her VA, Uchimura Fumiko, really brought out that cute, tomboy personality she had in the LN. Seems Uchimura Fumiko is a relatively new seiyuu?

I am seeing red flags this episode though. Aside from skipping more great story telling points, which I can sort of tolerate, pulling the God of Destruction, Europa all of sudden makes no sense. It’s an event from a future arc that had nothing to do with the current arc… I hate it when studios pull future events and stupidly mix it with the storyline as it means it’s probably the last time we’re seeing the adaptation of Isekai Maou in anime form. If they did do more seasons and cover that future arc, it’s going to need serious retconning… Well, it was still fun to see a decent amount of the LN scenes animated. I just hope this season ends in a way that would allow future seasons…
