「悪役になってしまった…」 (Akuyaku ni Natte Shimatta…)
“I Turned Into a Villain…”

In the realm of isekai evil is never far – especially when Bakarina is on the scene. If first episode primers weren’t enough to highlight the shenanigans Hamefura X is going to get up to, this week should’ve sealed the deal. From the heights of harem humour to the depths of less savoury machinations, in this world it’s mental minion munchkins all the way down.

Although Hamefura isn’t particularly stupendous comedy-wise, I still have to give this series credit for always putting a smile on my face. The sheer comedy of errors Katarina gets into never fails to impress, whether that be memorization gone wrong (and doubling down on unintentional disaster via poor application of glue), tripping over communication, or utterly failing to catch the clear and obvious hints flying about. Oh and the villainess persona? Perfectly (and hilariously) on point as always – and doubly so when you even have everyone else cheering over Bakarina doing Bakarina things. Nevertheless though the dork must take second place in the victory standings this week because you won’t find better than the result of Sophia playing matchmaker. Might need to start investing some more effort if you want the yuri ending Mary, methinks you’re going to need it.

Tried and true school skits aside, however, the big thing this week was naturally the cliffhanger, because things obviously aren’t complete without a little suspense and tension to drive new developments. Anyone’s guess just why Katarina got the wrong side of chloroform here, but pretty easy to assume it’s due to the presence of all those older siblings and the real reason they have now appeared. Defeated doom flags or not, the world never remains still, and given Katarina’s own social position best be sure some consider her a useful tool to get what they want. And get us what we want too; don’t think for a second rescuing Katarina won’t turn into a competition over who can find her first and reap the rewards.

Well, unless the dork manages to extract herself of course. Sometimes all you need to get out of a sticky situation is a bit of adorable stupidity, and we all know how skilled Bakarina is when it comes to that.

  1. That ending animation was something else. If I didn’t already know what I was watching, I would’ve thought it was an opening for some storybook fantasy anime; just really well done.

    1. It really was, a lot of the character scenes in particular were based on tarot cards and some of the latter images were heavily influenced by early circus advertising. Not at all what I expected to see in a show like this.
