“Nightfall” 「はじめての嫉妬」 (Hajimete no Shitto)
“First Fit of Jealousy”
Ugh-not another character who’s weirdly obsessed with one of the MCs. Fiona Frost (Sakura Ayane) and Yuri are two birds of the same feather and goodness knows (for me at least) even one character like that is one too many. It goes without saying that Loid and Yor are a good fit for each other, balancing each other out and providing a loving home for Anya. Previous episodes have already well established the home dynamics between these two- Yor’s dedication to the Forgers and her domestic insecurities. Loid’s acceptance of Yor for as she is (or at least the part of her that he can see-the spy thing is obviously a whole other matter that gets danced around).
At this point, it’s just plain silly (and irritating) to introduce an attempt at a love triangle. I didn’t get the point of this chapter in the manga and certainly not in the anime. I suppose filler material was needed to fill in a stop gap while the main story is a work in progress. But, considering it’s a series that publishes bi-monthly, not weekly, it’s a bit much. I suppose they needed to introduce Madam Frost, but surely they could have left out all of the annoying homewrecking “I love you Loid” theatrics. I suppose if she and Yuri ever meet, they would get along just fine (their undercover jobs aside), both working towards the same goal of homewrecking the happy Forgers.
The ending was overly sappy, repeating pretty much what we already know-Yor, Loid, and Anya need each other-nothing new added here, just running the mileage down on the same theme. The B part with jealous Bond wasn’t much better-more sentimentalism. It frustrates me that Spy x Family will have a good episode like last week, only to be followed by a sub-par one like this week. Following that pattern, hopefully next week will be improved (and if Frost’s screen time is small, that would be ideal).
