「爆裂狂のプレリュード」 (Bakuretsu-kyou no Pureryuudo)
“Prelude to an Explosion of Madness”
At last it’s here. Explosion. And not just any ordinary explosion, oh no. Big explosion. Fiery explosion. The sort of explosion that Hollywood animation experts get all hot and bothered about. And the best part? It won’t be the last of the season. Considering we’re just under halfway through, expect quite a few more where this one came from.
With the star of this episode being, well, the veritable star born, there’s not much really to be said otherwise. As expected Komekko stumbled across the thing (read: was given as a present by big sister) which Megumin first helped unlock way back in the first episode, and in true little sister fashion, did it in the way only Megumin herself could. As for Megumin, well, much like last time it was more emotional and heartfelt than inherently comedic. Much as stated before I really like this side of the girl, and between her being willing to give up the explosive dream for the sake of Yunyun and Yunyun herself doing what was necessary to rescue Komekko and Megumin, no better way of continuing to flesh out said side. It may ultimately only be skin deep compared to more complex tales, but these moments help keep giving life to the larper supreme.
Given we still have half a season left to go though, the question naturally turns to what’s next, and in that this week also continued giving some prominent ideas. Komekko breaking free the village’s resident dark god for one is a biggie, as first: it’s an enemy which requires Megumin to indulge in her pyroclastic one and done routine; and second: gives a reason for the girl to venture beyond the village itself. With both her and Yunyun now officially graduated and no longer eligible for levelling freebies experience point earning becomes a major concern, and Soketto’s obvious fortune telling alone isn’t enough to push the pint-sized nuke thrower into finally meeting the rest of the Konosuba crew. Having an escaped god on the loose provides suitable impetus to move this story forward, not to mention keep the comedy flowing.
Well, cannot forget keeping Chomusuke out of the ravenous clutches of hungry imouto jaws, that’s also just a tad important.

“She did it! She did the thing!”
Random thoughts summarized as possible:
– I knew this was basically the full version of Megumin and Yunyun’s flashback moment in Legend of Crimson, but I honestly did not expect Megumin to completely go all-in on Explosion moments after Yunyun made the decision to learn intermediate spells to save Komekko. (Foregone conclusion and all, but still…)
– Komekko’s interactions with Host (the “not-a-goblin” demon) were hilarious. Affably evil chap, that Host… And also how she found Chomusuke. (Apparently after solving part of that puzzle?)
– Ah yes, pixellated censoring… Yes, I know that’s basically the main KonoSuba series in a nutshell, though pixellation reminds me of off-brand anime and live-action videos instead–if you know what I mean. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) (Soketto’s “Capable?”, though… wwwww)
– And Chomusuke is finally named, yay!
I have to say I can’t get enough Komekko. This consistently hungry little sister brings me joy when Komekko gets screen time. I was surprised that Komekko didn’t get scared seeing that big demon thingy.
Now we know why Comusuke tagged with Megumin in her adventures when Komekko found this cat. The subs I watched for Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Bakuen wo! said that Komekko could eat Chomusuke. I know a few Chinese people that will contest cat meat as being delicious, such people would also say the same about dog meat.
I am super happy we saw Megumin perform an explosion spell in the midseason and not at the end of the Anime.
