「ヤベー女がきた」 (Yabē Onna ga Kita)
“A Dangerous Woman Arrives”

Reeling from the shock of losing his balls, which are then lost by Turbo Granny, Okarun and Momo embark on a fruitless treasure hunt. Which initially goes full on disaster mode when Turbo Granny sneaks into school in Okarun’s backpack. There’s an added urgency to finding the golden relics when they learn that picking them up can imbue the finder with spiritual powers.

Add to that drama the messiness of high school life, and the perfect storm for our teenaged main characters continues. While Okarun’s powers are mostly in check, they appear to be triggered by emotions, particularly, anger. His powers get fired up at school in defense of Momo’s honor being sullied by nasty school rumors that she’s loose. I suppose his powers striking fear into the class idiots isn’t such a bad thing, they were disrespecting him and Momo an awful lot. But it would be bad if his secret gets out. Also- how do you explain that to a teacher?? I am curious if his classmates saw the spooky transformation on him, or lacking spiritual abilities, they only felt the strength.

Okarun’s family jewels don’t stray too far from home, picked up by Aira. Spiritual powers in the hands of a delusional teenager is a dangerous thing indeed. Drunk on her newfound abilities and giant-sized ego, Aira takes it upon herself to exorcise the evil in Momo and Momo’s “familiar”. Which is really just gussied up bullying.

In contrast to some of the cool things we’ve seen with Momo’s spirit powers, such abilities aren’t at all rosy, as seeing them means they can see you and attach themselves to you. As Aira learns the hard way. Aira considers something like the red dress lady a familiar? I’m no expert, but even I get main spook vibes from that one. Chick’s got a loooot to learn- red dress lady is more like the main attraction.

The red dress lady is Acrobatic Silky, according to Turbo Granny’s research on a stolen phone (lol). So named, because of her silky locks and acrobatic moves. She considers herself a mother, attaching herself to Aira for years after a childhood encounter with the creature.

That’s not the only thing Aira’s dense in- she must really be not too sharp, to not have realized the cross was a lighter. But also, quite hilarious. It turns out for the best in the end- a lighter is way more useful than an “authentic” crucifix here. Especially when you have a lucky cat make the probable possible in Acrobatic Silky swallowing her hair, creating the perfect kindling.

Acrobatic Silky was such a bizarre character in the manga, I was really curious how they would bring her to life in anime form. Really, her character is best suited for anime, with colors and movement to really capture her essence. Well, that, and being defined by wearing a red dress, which admittedly, you can’t see in the black and white manga pages.

There is an interesting trend with the spooks, each of them possessing some sort of tremendous, yet whacky physical power. We had the sumo wrestling Flatwoods Monster, the high speed Turbo Granny, and now a gymnastics star wannabe, Acrobatic Silky. Such physical anomalies only add to the breakneck speed craziness of this series, one which I can’t (and don’t want to) look away from.

  1. At first, I didn’t know what to think about Aira. Her character is automatically unlikeable due to her terrible personality, and she is too young to understand how she has treated Kenwronglyg. Then I found out Ayane Sakura voices Aira, and now I believe in her!

When Aira confronts Momo in that abandoned factory and tries to exercise what Aira assumes to be a demon, the scene portrays Aira differently than when she bumped into Ken. So, I need clarification on who Aira is as a character. Is Aira a kind character who protects people by bringing down demons, or an ignorant child who has no idea she is disingenuous with people she bumps into? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think it’s possible to be both, like the phrase “killing with kindness” would suggest.

Didn’t we see the Silky yokai in Otherside Picnic too?
