Fall 2016 Preview!

Autumn winds are coming, there’s a potentially life-changing election around the corner, and 2016 has proved itself to be a thoroughly bizarre year. But amidst the madness we still have a new season of anime to bring us together, so there’s something to celebrate about! The past few seasons have been varied in genre and source material, and this is much the same. We’ve got a bundle of anime originals, with the WWII-inspired Shuumatsu no Izetta sure to make a strong impression, Classicaloid is bringing Mozart and Beethoven together in a colourful comedy, Flip Flappers looks to be a magical girl show with a bundle of creative talent behind it, and the misleadingly titled Yuri!!! on Ice has a lot to live up to. The Hellsing author’s latest manga, Drifters, is getting an adaptation, and the Occultic;Nine light-novels by the Steins;Gate author are also coming to our screens. There’s also a selection of prestige and award-winning material getting TV anime, with the popular novel and live-action film building expectations for Fune wo Amu, 3-gatsu no Lion is getting adapted by none other than Shaft, and the beloved Natsume Yuujinchou is returning for it’s fifth season. Speaking of sequels, we’ve got plenty: the Brave Witches spin-off is sure to satisfy Strike Witches fans, Haikyuu!!’s third season is set to cover the most important match yet, Kyoto Animation are blessing us with the sound of Hibike! Euphonium 2, and we even got a surprise spin-off announcement in WWW.WORKING!!. It’s a large and varied season that’s sure to offer something for everybody. This is Random Curiosity’s Fall 2016 Preview!

Summer 2016 Preview!

Summer is in the air, and it’s a time of change. Or at least it is for some people. You know what’s not changing? Anime, and the previewing thereof. We’ve got some big-name shows returning with sequels, including the cooking battle mega-hit Shokugeki no Souma, the sword-and-horses warfare of Arslan Senki, and the by-now-traditional new season of Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya. Not to be left out, several popular properties are getting their first shot at adaptation, including the breathlessly awaited drama orange, a science trip back to high school with ReLife, the next big Key visual novel adaptation in Rewrite, and not one but two DANGANRONPA series. A few popular authors are getting anime for their newer works, including a healing/diving anime from the ARIA author, Amanchu!, and the next offering from One-Punch Man’s author in Mob Psycho 100. Sports anime fans will be especially pleased with Battery and DAYS on the docket, and though original series are thin on the ground this summer, at least the Prohibition-era thriller 91Days and the new era of school idols in Love Live! Sunshine!! are looking promising. No, that’s not sweat you’re dripping with, it’s anticipation for these new anime. This is Random Curiosity’s Summer 2016 Preview.

Spring 2016 Preview!

The heat of summer has mercifully given way to autumn here in the southern hemisphere, but in animeland, i.e. the only place that matters, it’s spring, which means another big season of anime is coming. We have sequels targeted at those seeking a blast from the past, including more Sailor Moon Crystal to continue an old franchise, and more Concrete Revolutio to deconstruct them all. Watching anime just for the robots? Both Gundam and Macross have an iteration this season. Of course, there are adaptations across the genres for your perusal: the popular manga Boku no Hero Academia brings us shounen action, the popular videogame series Gyakuten Saiban brings legal adventure, and Sakamoto of the titular Sakamoto Desu ga? is plain popular, and also hilarious. But perhaps most notable are the original series that are harder to pigeonhole, like the supernatural bus trip of Mayoiga or Kuromukuro’s story of a samurai in a school on a dam, both to counterpoint the uncannily familiar Koutetsujou no Kabaneri. Why just listen to me list shows, though? Our crack team of animethusiasts are on hand to be your Geiger counter for the entire season of anime. This is Random Curiosity’s Spring 2016 Preview.

Winter 2016 Preview!

Brace yourselves… winter is coming. And like tired-ass memes from creatively bankrupt bloggers, that means it’s time for another season preview. The world of sequels is still going strong, with a continuation of the wonderful medieval romance Akagami no Shirayukihime 2nd Season, the final installment of the new Durararas in Durarara!!x2 Ketsu, and a return of the ridiculous[ly awesome] octopus-flavored assassination story in Ansatsu Kyoushitsu 2nd Season. Not to be outdone, there are exciting new adaptations as well, such as the multiple award-winning josei drama Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu, the gritty sci-fi of Dimension W, and the latest cute-boys-doing-sports-things otome game adaptation in Prince of Stride Alternative. As for originals—there are a lot of originals. I don’t even know where to start as there are so many of them, but some to look out for are studio Sanzigen’s CGI action series Bubuki Buranki, the powersuit cop action of Active Raid: Kidou Kyoushuushitsu Dai Hakkei, and what might be a reprise of your favorite childhood game in Phantasy Star Online 2 The Animation. All in all, there’s a wide range to look forward to for anime fans of all types. Join us once again as we tell you which ones we think will be good—this is Random Curiosity’s Winter 2016 Preview.

Fall 2015 Preview!

The fall may be upon us, but with El Niño in full effect and warmer than normal temperatures expected to continue, we’ll be keeping the spirit of summer alive as we go into the new season. First up are a slew of sequels, including the newest chapter of K in Return of Kings, the much anticipated second season of Haikyuu!!, the return of Gochuumon wa Usagi Desu Ka??, the near final iteration of the Monogatari series in Owarimonogatari, and continuations of Hidan no Aria, Noragami, Owari no Seraph, and Shinmai Maou no Testament. Rounding out the mix are an assortment of light novel and manga adaptations, highlighted by Heavy Object (bought to you by the creator of Index/Railgun) and One-Punch Man, as well as the arrival of a new original Gundam series in Tekketsu no Orphans. Subete ga F ni Naru: The Perfect Insider also warrants mention for its award-winning source material, adding a much needed mystery series and showing off the assortment of genres the fall has to offer. Ultimately, it’s a great season for those who wanted sequels to the aforementioned series, but the lack of other offerings (especially original series) makes this a weaker than normal fall season, and the season’s enjoyment may boil down to whether the other series pan out. Either way, it’s that time of the year again, and I’m proud to present to you Random Curiosity’s Fall 2015 Preview.

Summer 2015 Preview!

Summer has returned, and like (slightly delayed) clockwork, it’s time for another season preview. There are some strong contenders for your anime watching hours this summer. There are plenty of exciting sequels, such as the perennially popular Durarara!!x2 Ten, the triumphant return (and conclusion) of the aptly named workplace comedy WORKING!!!, the slice-of-life countryside antics of Non Non Biyori Repeat, and the third summer in a row of the magical girl spin-off Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya Zwei Herz!. New adaptations include the Eastern European flavored GANGSTA, the JSDF invasion of a fantasy land in GATE: Jieitai Kanochi nite, Kaku Tatakeri, the ufotable video game adaptation of God Eater, and the apocalyptic emotional roller coaster Gakkou Gurashi!. There are even some great promising originals, such as the romantic comedy set on Mars, Classroom Crisis, and the likely Maeda Jun tear jerker in Charlotte. There’s even a very special guest in the long-awaited fantasy of a new Dragon Ball anime, Dragon Ball Super! Some say summer is no good, but if even a few of these pan out, it could be a great season. This is Random Curiosity’s Summer 2015 season preview.

Spring 2015 Preview!

I can’t believe a year has already passed since I last wrote a preview introduction. I love spring; not only because it brings us warmer weather, but it’s one of my favorite anime seasons, and it marks the anniversary for a handful of writers here at Random Curiosity. This April we welcome back a ton of sequels to everyone’s favorite series. We have newly announced sequels after last year’s successful prequels (Nisekoi:, Sidonia no Kishi: Dai-kyuu Wakusei Sen-eki), and some series with long-awaited sequels (Digimon Adventure tri., Yahari Ore no Seishun Rabukome wa Machigatteiru. Zoku). There’s also a good combination of new (Kekkai Sensen, Shokugeki no Souma) and old (Fate/stay night Unlimited Blade Works 2nd Season) adaptation favorites. And if none of that tickles your fancy, you still have completely original anime (Plastic Memories) to look forward to. Regardless of what your preferences are, I don’t doubt that you’ll find something that catches your eye this season. After a mediocre winter season, I’m so pumped for spring! Bring on all 46 shows!

Winter 2015 Preview!

Winter is here, and with it comes another season of anime. This is a light season, with only 31 new series airing. There are some familiar names, including another TV movie-style entry into the Monogatari series, Tsukimonogatari, the speedy return of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, the second half of the trainwreck fantastic spectacle ALDNOAH.ZERO, and more ghoul horror from Tokyo Ghoul. The wildly popular manga Ansatsu Kyoushitsu is also finally getting its anime, as is the perhaps even more popular ship girl video game, Kancolle. This season even features the long-awaited return of Durarara!! That’s just a taste, so read on for the full scoop.

Fall 2014 Preview!

Say good-bye to the hot summer temperatures with a refreshing fall breeze and a slew of new anime for your viewing pleasure. There are some big hitters making their triumphant return, like Fate/Stay Night diving into its Unlimited Blade Works route and Log Horizon starting its second season. Some crazy slice-of-lifes making their fall debut include the mermaid-related Ore no Furo Jijou and the Akiba based bookstore Denki-Gai no Honya-san. There’s also a bunch of your typical fare to fill in the cracks, like Kyoto Animation’s slackstick drama Amagi Brilliant Park, a Sunrise original called Cross Ange: Tenshi to Ryuu no Rondo, A-1 pictures’ part-medieval part-shounen Nanatsu no Taizai, a high school based fantasy known as Inou-Battle wa Nichijou-kei no Naka de from Studio Trigger, and Studio Ghibli’s first foray into television with Sanzoku no Musume Ronja. One’s taste in anime can be really subjective, but I think this season’s offerings provide enough for anyone to find something they’ll like. So what are you waiting for? Start scrolling!

Summer 2014 Preview!

Summer has returned, bringing with it a fresh batch of anime to give you excuses to escape from the heat. It’s an interesting batch we have this time. If I had to call this season anything, it would be the Summer of Sequels, with continuations of the KyoAni boys love swimming anime Free!, the alien-hunting stylings of SPACE☆DANDY, the second season of everybody’s favorite magical girl spin-off Fate/Kaleid Liner Prisma☆Illya Zwei!, another arc of Nisio Isin’s Monogatari series in Hanamonogatari, and the colossally popular (and equally polarizing) second season of Sword Art Online. But there are originals as well, including the P.A. Works’ summer romance Glasslip, XEBEC’s mecha series Shirogane no Ishi Argevollen, and another mecha series in the Urobutcher/Aoki Ei collaboration ALDNOAH.ZERO. There’s even a bit of a resurgence in the horror/thriller category, buoyed by the highly anticipated adaptation of Tokyo Ghoul and the original series Zankyou no Terror. Last year’s summer season was surprisingly strong. Can this year keep the trend going? There’s only one way to find out. This is Random Curiosity’s Summer 2014 season preview.
