“Running for Someone That’s the Kind of Soccer I Want to Play”

This week, DAYS delivered with a functional episode. It didn’t provide any particularly profound revelations, but it also wasn’t really broken in any way. This is not to say a few great themes were touched upon. The idea was that Tsukamoto really needed to gain some confidence if he was to ascend to a greater level of skill and earn the respect of his teammates. A message like this was refreshing in that it demanded that Tsukamoto actually undergo a change in mentality, as opposed to trucking along as his hard-working self.

However, the theme is so heavily diluted that it barely comes across, and doesn’t hit with the narrative resonance I don’t think the show even cared to provide. Instead of solely pinning the agency on Tsukamoto to change and adapt in the face of Kimishita-senpai, it was the senpai who underwent the change. Tsukamoto didn’t undergo any sort of mental or physical transformation—someone else did. And that’s perhaps DAYS biggest problem. It seems more occupied with developing those surrounding Tsukamoto than Tsukamoto himself. Every character arc involves another individual being affected by Tsukamoto in some substantial way. That’s fine and dandy, but Tsukamoto is our protagonist—not them. And for the most part, he has remained a static character. I can’t recall any really significant way he has developed in the course of the past six episodes. DAYS really needs to shift the focus towards its main character—something which shows shouldn’t really have an issue doing.

Furthermore, the only real lessons that these other characters are learning are just slight variations of “hard work is cool” and that thus that “Tsukamoto is awesome”(the latter of which is becoming increasingly harder believe the less he’s fleshed out). At least spice it up a bit, come on.

Overall an inoffensive if troubling installment of DAYS this week. While the episode itself wasn’t fundamentally flawed in what it was trying to accomplish, its goals are systematic of the show’s deepest problems. Even though DAYS is still a pleasant series with genuinely humorous moments and likable characters, the show continues to be disappointingly unambitious and insufficiently focused on developing its characters—primarily its protagonist. Plus where are my cool exciting soccer matches. I want my cool exciting soccer matches. Please.

  1. Seriously? Now he is so “Dumb” not hitting the ball anymore? Did he forgot it? Yeah, they are progressing the others and let the MC untouched and make him even dumb

Are they mocking the football fans? aka, do not even try as an “poor” player to join the “Pros”, stay away you drag the team down?…

so if this is true, then this here is Trash

  2. Days shows why good sports anime are so rare when they focus on kids. They tend to overdo it, by making the protagonist a complete blank slate who can barely put one foot in front of the other. And unlike say Eyeshield 21 which had the same problem Days doesn’t have the comedic elements which make the series truly enjoyable.

    1. well atleast Eyeshield 21 had something that made him special and could work on. This protagonist can’t do shit and somehow the write him off as the new incarnation of messi.

Eyeshield 21 anime sucked compared the manga. but so does allot of sports manga translations
seeing the whole movement of the players animated instead of imagining them while reading just screws up the entire sport concepts

    2. I disagree. Sports Anime like Big Windup & Major had interesting MC with detailed backstories.
Other anime like Yowamushi Pedal, Kuroko’s Basketball, Baby Steps, Ace of Diamonds all have MC that are talented or have serious potential as well

  3. Why the hell does everyone in this show act like the MC is the God of Soccer who has descended upon the Earth? The guy is USELESS. He can’t even kick a ball right. Nobody in their right mind would take him on the team just because of “potential”. This show is really poorly written.

    1. Sure he is useless but that’s not what is show is about. This is a sports anime about believing in yourself and always trying your best. And MC is the physical embodiment of that.
