「使い魔の活用法」 (Tsukaima no Katsuyouhou)
“How To Use Your Familiar”
After about a month of Flying Witch, I’ve come to realize that you can find charm everywhere in this show so long as you keep an eye out.
Chinatsu’s Adventures
With half of the episode revolving around Chinatsu and her efforts to keep up with the ever agile Chito the cat, you’d think that watching something like this would be awfully boring. And at first glance, I wouldn’t fault you for thinking that way. But if you take a second and try to place yourself in Chinatsu’s shoes, you’ll soon find that you’ve been transported off into a whole different world – a world that may seem familiar if you went outside a lot during your childhood. From hearing stories from people older than you to discovering things you may or may not have been supposed to find, there were a lot of things to really find enjoyment from. And honestly, I’m still surprised with just how much I liked Chinatsu’s half of the episode.
Chito, Nao, and Makoto
On the other hand, the other half of the episode felt like our more typical fare. With Chito acting as Makoto’s tour guide (since without someone guiding her, there’s a good chance Makoto might end up in America), we got to see the same places from a slightly different angle. And you know what? There was actually some charm in seeing things from a slightly older perspective. While it wasn’t as “magical”, there was still enough to keep your attention focused on all the little things that Chito found on his walk around the neighborhood.
Looking Ahead
If you couldn’t tell, not much really happened this week. But that doesn’t mean that the episode itself was boring – if anything it was actually quite relaxing! Relaxing in a way that makes this the perfect episode to turn on, kick back, and relax as Makoto and the gang go through their daily lives.
Catch you guys next week!
This episode was interesting. If you’re an anime-only viewer, you probably couldn’t tell: the first half of the episode was anime-original. The second half was from an early chapter, although they expanded it a bit. That, by the way, is probably the reason Akane spent the entire time sleeping, and Kenny was nowhere to be seen: they weren’t actually around yet in this chapter.
Despite the original content (or because of it? Including it.) this episode felt like another good episode of Flying Witch. Not a lot happened, not a lot needed to happen. Chinatsu got to see her hometown from a perspective that she’d never had before, we discover that “Mom, I don’t know where I’m going, but it’ll probably be somewhere awesome!” is all the explanation needed for a 9-10 year-old to go out on her own in that town, Makoto and Nao got to spend more time together, Nao met Chito and learned that he thinks she’s cute, Makoto met someone else who knew about witches, and good times were had by all.
I’m a little disappointed, because we didn’t get the episode that would have followed the previous one according to manga order, but the disappointment is only because I was expecting something specific (one of my favorite chapters) and didn’t get it. People who have just been watching the anime should be able to enjoy this episode just fine.
my thought why Big Sister sleeps a lot, she use her “mana” very often and her body need an rest for a while. to recharge her battery.
Very interesting to know the first half was anime-original, since it certainly didn’t feel like it with how naturally the second half rolled from the first. Though curiously enough, I did feel like Chinatsu was written slightly differently from before, so I guess that’s were the feeling came from. (Very slightly, not enough to warrant a complaint or call it out of character. The difference was comparable to how someone would act a bit different if they were little bit tipsy or something)
I was wondering about Akane basically sleeping through the episode assuming that there was a ‘deep’ reason. Looks like that is not going to be the case. I have not read the manga and so don’t have expectations for what is going to happen. I still think that Chinatsu is going to turn out to be a witch too. She interacts so well with the ones she has already met. BTW, if you know please don’t spoil it only way or the another, I’m happy waiting to find out from the series. Haven’t entirely decided, but atm this is my favorite anime of this season.
it was mentioned in the episode where she pulled out this horrible Scream Guy as an present.. Only specific persons could her this scream….

For me, this was the funniest moment of the episode with Chito saying that Akane was also cute.
I also liked the small detail of how Kei and Chinatsu’s Mom gave their Dad 2 croquettes(?) for lunch since he didn’t get to eat one during breakfast.
Dad actually got 2 pieces of meat for lunch to compensate what Akane took from him earlier. It’s the little things we often miss.
This Anime show us what most of City peoples forgotten about, this peoples have Time, enough time in her life. Where the time flows slower then for the City ones, where time is money…
My favorite this season, really!
Sadly I believe this pacing means we won’t be seeing BEST BUNNY.
I really hope not, lets just hope they’re ending it with the best bunny ever!!
I just wanna see them animate chapters 17 and 18, my favorite chapters so far!
Truly the Iyashikei of the season.
From Chito’s perspective that was an interesting tour of the town. It’s just not the same as what a human would necessarily think of as interesting. Now a dog’s tour of interesting places would be very different and mostly things that we couldn’t even smell!
Flying Witch: my weekly healing. Love this show.
