「紅魔の里のガーディアンズ」 (Kouma no Sato no Gaadianzu)
“Guardians of the Crimson Demon Village”

Three episodes in and what else is there to say: it’s Konosuba alright. From the fun of Megumin doing Megumin things to, well, Megumin doing other Megumin things, everything you could’ve wanted from this side-story is present and proving thoroughly entertaining. And if you happen to want a break from the various Megumin-isms, never say Yunyun doesn’t know how to provide.

Compared to the original Konosuba, one of the things I’m really liking here is the occasional and almost sly reveals of hidden personality features. Megumin after all isn’t just a chuuni-addled explosion lover with a serious chest complex, oh no – she’s also a girl who cares a lot about her family and also the friends she makes along the way. Her love for Komekko and taking care of her is obvious for one (and a nice build on what the movie showcased regarding Megumin’s family life), but her quiet and oftentimes adorable regard for Yunyun really seals the deal. Pull away the always funny rivalry and the usual comedic relief and you get a good understanding that Megumin is as much in on the joke as she endeavours to suggest otherwise. It’s a nice bit of nuance to an otherwise parodic story, showing in part that Megumin isn’t a one-trick girl.

Mind you, regardless of cute and cuddly comedy is still very much the name of the game here as this week’s events highlighted. Bukkorori’s obsession with Soketta after all is basically a match made in hilarious heaven – quite literally once you pick up on what was meant by Soketta not being able to tell her own fortune – but this story runs the gamut from embarrassed teasing to ridiculous(ly funny) monsters and probably my favourite in Pucchin the teacher who not only makes his entraces dramatic, but also makes sure said entrances leave the door open slightly. Don’t ask me why, I always get a hearty chuckle out of that every time, alongside his own commitment to the rule of cool. This may not be the absolute top tier of comedy, but as a fun and comfy ride this Konosuba is doing everything right and keeping at least interesting in seeing just what comes next.

Considering we have yet to even touch on the kids practicing magic, what comes next is bound to be very interesting indeed.

  1. Bukkororii can be a creepy stalker, a NEET and looks like Keyaru, but…poor guy didn’t deserve to get his heart broken like that. (And to the sound of KonoSuba‘s sad music, to boot, which also made me remember Aqua’s own crying moments… wwwww)

Megumin: “Whatever the case, if I were to fall for someone, I’m sure he’d be a dashing, peerless hero!”
Me: “Are you sure about that?”

  2. I’m amused by the fact that Bukkororii admitted he was stalking unknowingly. The girls of Crimson Demons collectively decided Bukkororii needed to disappear. Though wish the girls would kill Bukkororii off with anything other than books.

Man, what a pal Megumin didn’t need to help Bukkororii out with getting closer to Soketto, and she did it anyways. Megumin could have just blown Bukkororii off and moved on with her day.

Plus, Soketto not being able to see Bukkororii’s future love interest in that crystal ball proves fortune telling isn’t real magic, nor does it come close to pseudo-science.
…Also, I think it’s a telltale sign why the ball doesn’t show the truth Bukkororii needs because his love is in front of him.

    1. I think you missed the twist: Soketto can’t see Bukkororii’s future love interest is because it would implicitly reveal Soketto’s future love interest by association, and fortune tellers can’t see their own futures.

    2. As tsirrus says, the big twist out in the open was Soketto stating she cannot read or appear in her own fortune. Since Bukkorori saw nothing, it implies that love interest is Soketto as she was the one reading said fortune. Hell Soketto even went as far to confirm it by saying the guy, while crazy, was interesting 😛
