「なでしこナビと湯けむりの夜」 (Nadeshiko Navi to Yukemuri no Yoru)
“A Night of Navigator Nadeshiko and Hot Spring Steam”
In Episode 09 of Yuru Camp, Nadeshiko takes on the role of Oracle as she tries to give Rin coordinates for hot spots around the Southern Alps of Kamiina to make up for her illness putting their local bonding trip on-hold. But Rin finds out that navigating around the Alps is tougher than it looks with road-blocks that restrict vehicles to protect the environment, the amount of tourist attractions in the area, and the warning signs about bears surrounding the mountains.
As Chiaki moves in to hijack Nadeshiko’s transmission, she’s directed to multiple places between Ina and Komagane from the Mushroom Kingdom to Senjoujiki Curl. Rin eventually settles with the Kouzenji doggy temple that celebrates the legend of Hayatarou through statues and expensive gifts. It was nice how Rin was interested in incorporating Nadeshiko into her solo trip by welcoming her guidance since it marks a change of pace for Rin’s general interest in discovering places on her own.
The episode also gave ample time for Chiaki to get some room for growth as she “helps” Nadeshiko while she recovers. Her inclusion in the chat does open things up for Rin to be in the company of campers outside of Nadeshiko, but Chiaki’s greatest accomplishment was attempting to cook for Nadeshiko’s entire family. It was the first time we saw her dad and mom, the latter of which looks similar to Nadeshiko’s sister Sakura. However, the possibility of wowing everyone by cooking Houtou, a regional dish from Chiaki’s hometown of Yamanashi, could only come from the help of a professional chef’s video demonstration.
Despite it being someone else’s recipe, it offers up the possibility of Chiaki getting more into cooking, especially with her new cookware and her interest in campfire cooking through Rin’s grandfather’s skillet steak. Although Nadeshiko’s recommendation for Rin to get Komagane Sauce Katsudon won out over the Ina specialty Lo Mein, you still did great, Chiaki.
It wasn’t just them that got some decent exposure though as the other side characters were able to get some time for themselves. Although Aoi wasn’t able to make it to Nadeshiko’s place, we got to see her small twin sister, and have the promise of seeing more of her soon enough. The most significant development comes from Ena, who officially decided to join everyone on a Christmas camping trip. She also gets a cute section at the end of the episode where she takes the opportunity to fashion Rin’s hair yet again into a funny shape; this time, as a pagoda. It’ll be exciting to look forward to the Christmas vacation now that it might just be the first time everyone is all together at once.
Unfair! What happened to Rin?! If they don’t explain it in the next episode I’m going to really be bent out of shape. Lions and Tigers and Bears oh my! Well, just bears and maybe a boar or even a doggy. LoL. Not even clear how far she was from the campground.

I like how the show portray rin as a lovable and hilarious introverted character, there’s not many show that can show introverted part of characters without making them as a cold, arrogant and weird emo person.
Someone get this chick a Microsoft Surface like Rin.

LOL, I don’t think that would have helped Chiaki. It seemed that she was trying to keep it low key so that Nadeshiko’s family wouldn’t find out that she didn’t know how to make authentic houtou. Her smartphone was enough to guide her through the process without being found out!

Luckily, everyone loved it.
Not bad, Chiaki. Not bad at all.

Love this. I looked up the story on Wikipedia, though I had to look up “Shippeitaro” as there was no mention of Hayatarou (even though the name Hayatarou is clearly marked on the grave that Rin visits).
Still, there are so many variants to the story: one seemed to have demon cats as the evil spirits that Shippeitaro must vanquish, others mentioned monkeys, tanuki, and even wolves. Some stories didn’t even have a dog as a central part of the story! Kozenji Temple is mentioned however.
Strange…

Being the only sane guy in the family of weirdos means she’s the weirdo in the family.
Fully expected the omake at the end to be Sakura asking viewers/Chiaki what kind of faces they would make after living some 20 years with 3 Nadeshikos
Nadeshiko has her mother’s eyes. Her sister’s hair match her father’s eye color, I think.
In a comprehensive and insightful post, someone took the liberty of explaining how simple genetics accounts for the colourful phenotypes seen in the Kagamihara family, and also worked out some of the precise locations that Rin visited while being guided by Nadeshiko and Chiaki. Curious to know why thundabreaka hasn’t visited this blog yet to correct their author, though, considering their expertise in all things.
Ep 10:
– the mix is all good again, they put the merchandising a bit down, and now the soup is okay
– i can not wait for the Christmas camping.
– the dog is kawaii, too. I hope she do not forget to bring the bed for the dog with her.. or she take him into her sleep bag (reduced weight)
