“Nadeshiko’s Solo Camp Planning”
On this week’s Yuru Camp, it’s finally time for Nadeshiko to venture out on her first solo camping trip. As she makes it to Fujinomiya, however, Rin and Nadeshiko’s sister Sakura have their own fair share of trouble trying to see if she’ll be able to make it alone. Luckily, things turn out as fine as expected to round up another pleasant episode that takes full advantage of this season’s more thorough approach towards visiting attractions that surround the campsite.
One interesting pair-up I didn’t expect was Sakura and Rin stumbling across each other around hot springs near Akasawa-shuku. While Rin was visiting to enjoy barley tea, mamemochi, and amazake nearby the region’s temples and cedarwood, Sakura wanted to visit the hot springs after seeing it and many other attractions from travel shows. It was nice to see that they were able to hit it off very quickly and carry a conversation as soon as they bonded over their mutual interest in Moped’s Journey.
But Rin’s anxiety about how Nadeshiko will fare during her first solo trip has her wanting to see just how well she’ll do on her own. Even though she gave Nadeshiko tips on how to not die during a camping trip, she kept checking her phone to see how her friend is doing. Similarly, Sakura’s anxiety from begrudgingly approving of Nadeshiko’s trip has her on-edge about whether it was the right decision for her to avoid danger.
Even though the episode was predominantly about planning, thankfully we got to see quite a bit of Nadeshiko’s trip to Fujinomiya. The art was noticeably impressive this time around with the scenery of Fujinomiya being sketched out in all of its glory. The views of Mt. Fuji from many parts of town add a peaceful atmosphere to the town that I can only imagine would get way better once Nadeshiko starts camping out.
The food especially looks gorgeous in this episode with the town’s regional specialty, Yakisoba, getting its time in the sun. Although she couldn’t wait in the long lines to buy some from the more popular yakisoba vendors in town, she got her fix in an even more delightful way in Okonomiyaki form. Gomoku Shigure, or Shigure-Yaki, is a fine example of taking two great food items and combining them to create an astounding dish. And it looks beautiful with the animation taking much joy in capturing the dish’s construction from top to bottom in all of its glory. The scenery and backgrounds are breathtaking in Yuru Camp, but this episode also solidifies its ability to make food look even more delicious.
Some people have commented that this episode is important in setting the precedence for how different people do solo activities differently. We see that Nadeshiko’s solo experiences has a different style to them compared to Rin’s, which is a nice touch to show how people will only really get something when they try it out for themselves.
I really appreciate that perspective. Compared to the episodes where Rin spends her off-time trying to map out different key sights to touch base on before moving towards the campsite, Nadeshiko mainly focused on finding a place to enjoy yakisoba and enjoys the sights as she goes along.
They both have that “In Rome” sense of trying to get the most out of the town, but Nadeshiko’s approach emphasizes soaking everything in as she freely explores while Rin tries to get the most out of her surroundings knowing that there are scenic parts of a town with a wonderful view or delicacies.

aside form that, camping is definitely one of those things where planning and preparation is crucial
Yeah, I was definitely craving okonomiyaki after this. I know a place farther away that has it, but I need to gather the ingredients to whip some up one day.
It is interesting to watch shows or movies during the pandemic that treat the world as if everything is still in 2019. It’s kind of a pleasant reminder of what to look forward to once we’re all able to get healthy and travel out without worrying about illness.
Yeah, word of wise to anyone traveling would be to plan everything out in advance, from expenses to locations that would be high priority to reserve or take into consideration.
