It’s time to put away the tinsel and shrug off those New Years hangovers, because the new season of anime is just about to start. This is Random Curiosity’s Winter 2014 blogging schedule.

As always, this is a tentative overview of our plans for the new season. We’ll also be doing introductory posts on many of the shows we’re not covering, so if something catches our eyes, things will be shifted around to accommodate. The schedule will be updated to reflect any changes.

A few quick things on our holdovers from fall. First, Zanibas is going to be handing Golden Time to another writer. Though an enjoyable show, it pokes Zani in one of his biggest pet peeves, making it not very fun to blog, and with other writers who would enjoy writing about it more in the wings he decided it was better to pass it along. We’re still not 100% sure who will be taking over though, so it will remain under Zanibas’ name until we figure that out.

Next, Zephyr will be dropping Kill la Kill after Episode 13. Normally we wouldn’t put a carryover we’re not continuing on the schedule, but I didn’t want you to think it had been forgotten. Zephyr is going to do one more post so he can explain why he’s dropping it, so I’ll defer to him on that. Following a good start to the second half, Zephyr has decided to continue coverage of Kill la Kill for the time being.

In writer news, Asobi will officially be going on hiatus as of this season. His RL obligations have gotten too onerous for him to continue blogging reliably (job searching is a bitch), but we wish him luck and thank him for finishing out his last season the right way. Was that too corporate PR-ish? Seriously, we love ya man. Be amazing.

As for the shows we’re picking up from the new season, don’t panic. I know it looks a little thin right now, but a number of us are eyeing other series we’re thinking about picking up, there just wasn’t as much intersection between our blogging picks as there usually is this time, so we decided to give a bunch of shows a test ride rather than jumping in sight unseen. We’re still full ahead on most of the highly anticipated winter series, and I for one am pumped for all the intro posts that will be coming at you during the next few weeks.

Other than that, I uncharacteristically don’t have a lot to say this time. Remember to follow the official RandomC Twitter @RandomC_Blog for up-to-the-minute coverage updates, and check this post as the season progresses for additional pick ups. Now it’s time for another year of anime with Random Curiosity. I hope you’re looking forward to it, because I know I am.

1/16: Two! Two anime! Takaii likes his jokes dirty and/or random, which is why he’s picking up both Seitokai Yakuindomo* and Tonari no Seki-kun.
1/17: Sorry Golden Time fans, but no writers were interested in picking up the show. It has been dropped.
1/17: Stilts couldn’t resist the yuri – Sakura Trick has been picked up. B-But I’m not the ecchi writer, I swear!
1/24: It’s ecchi, it’s silly, and it’s funny as hell – Zanibas is officially blogging Nourin. Let the baka comedy continue!
1/30: I really tried not to, I really don’t have the time…but nope, I must. Stilts has picked up Mikakunin de Shinkoukei!

  1. None of the links to the winter shows (any of the new stuff) seem to be working.

This is indeed looking kind of blank right now. I’ll have to hold you to your vague statement about folks potentially grabbing a few more shows, Stilts. Unless something catches someone’s eye, I’m going to be stuck with just the two shows I’m currently watching that carried over from last season. :\

    Wanderer
  2. If I had the right to vote, my votes would go for you guys to pick up Buddy Complex, Nisekoi and Mikakunin.

But the more important thing is that the links are not working, they lead to this article, not the full preview.

    1. Like I said with Kill la Kill, we don’t usually list shows on the schedule from previous seasons unless we’re blogging them, since they’re not relevant to our schedule. I only did it for Kill la Kill because it was being dropped and I wanted to reference that.

      Stilts
    1. I don’t disagree that the season looks pretty blasé on paper, but nevertheless as Stilts-chama says, there will be some shows picked up after a test drive. I think that overall lack of standouts on the schedule is one reason why there are fewer early commitments than normal.

    2. What Enzo said. Usually there are a handful of shows that a lot of us are interested in covering, but there wasn’t as much overlap in our blogging picks this time, so we just said screw it, might as well take it a bit slow and try more shows out before committing this time.

      Stilts
      1. I personally think this is a much better way to approach blogging each season because it will make it easier for you guys to organize your workload. Haha im actually surprised you guys didn’t do this sooner.

        sonicsenryaku
      2. agree with Sonic. I’ve said pretty much the same thing somewhere in one of my comments in this post.
plus, I think some sort of shows have nothing to offer in covering them on weekly basis. sometimes a first impression and final impression can do the job (you know what?even 3-5 posts instead of 12, assuming 1cour season of course). even if it’s a great anime. and in some blogs I know it’s a common standard.

        p.s

        What Enzo said

        Enzo said: “Stilts-chama”.
then follow the rules of logic..you’re Stilts-chama XD (it fits ever since you changed that avatar image LOL)

  3. Although there are still a number of shows being blogged, I kinda hope a couple more get picked up! If RL schedules permits, that is.

Looking forward to reading the posts for Nobunaga the Fool, Noragami, Space Dandy, To Aru Hikuushi e no Koiuta, and Gin no Saji.

Crossing my fingers for Nisekoi, Buddy Complex, Mahou Sensou, Pupa, Neppuu Kairiku Bushi Road, and Hamatora get picked up. At least under snapshots?

    Jel
  4. I was kind of hoping someone was looking forward to Wizard Barristers. The premise seemed odd enough to warrant attnetion. Well, I’ll have to hope for the episode 1 snapshot to be favorable enough to warrant further reviews.

    Wanderer
    1. I usually don’t watch the 5 minute or whatever 4 koma anime either, but Namiuchigiwa no Muromi-san was awesome for the 12 minutes of epicness it gave me with each episode!

      Magoiichi
      1. Honestly, I haven’t been caught up on Kill la Kill since the first episode aired. It just hasn’t tickled my interest that strongly yet, so something else always feels like it would be more fun to watch. Very unlikely that’ll change in time for me to pick it up, if at all.

        Stilts
      1. I know the UTW subtitle team intends to work on Student Council Staff Members*, so perhaps they have a preference for such shows.

They also wish to sub Chuunibyo Season 2, BUT only if it is NOT simulcast.

        zztop
  5. Really surprised to see samurai Flamenco still getting coverage from Cherrie. That show had gone completely nuts and practically self-destructed in the latest episode. Even if she’s been pretty positive on her posts so far, there’s a fear that she might go nuts on the way as well.

    Amiluhur
    1. LOL! Thanks guys… >_>

Yes, the show has gone in a completely different direction than I anticipated… but I never like dropping shows and I have this thing with finishing whatever I start =X (guess that makes me quite an M? o_O) I don’t think it’s normal to be dropping shows left, right and center and I have no real reason to if people are still following as well. If it turns out to be complete shit later… well then, you’ll hear a review about that at the end =)

      1. Here here! That’s my mentality aswell, I follow the 3 episode-drop-rule myself and so far haven’t dropped anything, bu the thing that pisses me off the most is when people drop an anime only after the first episode and people that drop things left and right >.>

Personally I’m still enjoying SF, it’s all over the place and those villains look like they will be fun fights 😀

    1. Seitokai Yakuindomo. Please Takaii, for the love that is holy…

…Well to be honest, dialogue-driven show with wacky characters seems like your thing, just like Monogatari series

      Amiluhur
  6. well, it does seem a little thin right now in terms of covers. and I do wanted to see some more covers for some shows I highly looking forward to. but knowing you guys (mostly Stilts and Zephy), you are M! so I guess some other shows will be picked up later after first impression post.
but, I do must say I am surprised that Stilts isn’t going to continue with Chuuni..

anyway, looking forward reading your covers of the current season. keep doing your best as you guys always do. I believe we’ll have good year for anime. and this season will be a good one too.

    thedarktower
    1. I have 2 important pieces of information to tell you:
      (1)this:

don’t panic…other series we’re thinking about picking up

(2)you got to understand it’s hard to pick up something to blog on weekly basis based only about synopsis and a teaser video. and it applies not only to Nisekoi but for everything else. sometimes, you got just to try an anime and knowing if it’s worth to blog and work hard for it weekly (the fact that it’s progressing on weekly basis is affecting, trust me).you might find out that it is good or it is not. but deciding only by synopsis and teaser in most cases isn’t satisfying enough.
and it doesn’t matter if it’s hyped because of the material or studio or I don’t know why.
we saw it in Kyokai no Kanata. it was so hyped, but in the end…we all know the result (not totally bad, but partly a feeling of disappointment).

so, as a someone who read Nisekoi, I know that the material is good, but let’s see how is the adaptation (don’t forget, most RCs aren’t familiar with the manga).
I do believe Nisekoi is one of the shows they are targeting even if not listed in blogging on weekly basis. and I am sure our dear RCs will watch and give Nisekoi (and the rest) a chance. plus, let’s not forget that Nisekoi is also have carry some expectations since it’s WSJ manga being adapted by shaft (believe me, it’s like a new record in the anime world, even if Nisekoi isn’t the regular shonen HaHa).

      thedarktower
      1. And… you’re ok with it? Because he’s actually kinda making a fuss by not telling us why he’s quitting and saying goodbye.

I don’t care how busy he might be. I would think that it would be common practice for writers to introduce themselves when they come in and post a farewell entry when they’re quitting. It’s called “loyalty” and “respect”. Come on now…

Beside, you mean to tell me that he cannot afford even 1 hour to write his Farewell post? Dude, there’s “being busy” and then there’s “being overloaded”.

You said goodbye (kinda), Omni said goodbye and so did Divine, Verdant, Moomba, Bakamochi, Stereoman, Unlisted and others, why can’t Seishun do it? If he somehow managed to blog shows, then surely, he can provide one last post…

…unless you guys told him to quit and he was actually fired from RC…

        JiCi
      2. He was not fired, I assure you. He went over why he was going to be quitting on his final FAIRY TAIL manga post. And Sei-chan isn’t the only writer who chose to leave quietly. Both Mochi and just this season Asobi decided to do the same. Whichever way they decide to do it is fine with me as long as they’re classy about their departure, and Seishun was. Whether he makes a big deal out of it was his choice, and I stand by it.

        Stilts
    1. nope. not cancelled.don’t worry. continue as usual on Mondays (this week there wasn’t an episode because of holidays break or something).
they didn’t put it in the table. same as magi 2nd season, Daiya no Ace, Hajime no ippo, Kuroko basket, kingdom and more.
in fact, I think they just didn’t put all “leftovers” that aren’t being blogged by them.

      thedarktower
  7. Looking at the comments, don’t people read the post before commenting? 0_0
Besides, it’s been written byt Stilts. It’s almost a blasphemy not to read something written by Stilts.

Obligatory “hoping to see at least one post on Inari konkon, koi iroha” post

    Anonymosity
    1. ^ This. I know, right? To your first point, though I very much thank you for the compliment on the latter : )

And we’re currently planning to give Inari an intro, so unless something unexpected happens, look forward to it!

      Stilts
  8. @Stilts

I’m assuming the reason you only have Log Horizon listed is because you’ll be taking a wait and see approach on certain shows with the potential of having depth behind them before falling back on shows like Saki or Sakura Trick (Not saying the shows are bad… it’s just that they don’t really have a ton of things that need to be said about them on an episode to episode basis in comparison to a plot driven show).

Plus… you know… you’re not the ecchi writer! keep telling yourself that 😛

    Kuntzy
      1. I’ve been reading RandomC for almost 2 years now, and I swear that the first thing I noticed about this place is that you Stilts are the “ecchi” writer. Stop trying to get rid of the tag; embrace it and in the end you will find… inner peace…!

        Tassadar
      2. I swear, Takkun is the one who blogs about Arararagi, but I’m the one with his reputation. Slander! Though I will respond to oni no onii-chan, and will accept a couple of fire sisters if offered. But still, slander!!

        Stilts
      3. I don’t think I’d be able to respond to oni no onii-chan at all…

I’d most likely be ascending to the gates of Heaven after hearing Hayamin call me Onii-chan in any variation.

        Onii-sama works too.

        Kuntzy
  9. Aww. No more Kill la Kill? Sad, I’m still enjoying it at least. 🙁 But to each their own, as I say.

So just wondering, but besides the shows that you guys have already tagged as what you’re planning on blogging, what other shows are you all interested in looking at or hopeful about possibly covering? 🙂

(And yeah, I can totally see why trying to cover SYD* weekly would be HARD. XD)

    platinum
  10. Each season fewer and fewer shows get blogged, but I guess you bloggers are only human with RL obligations. Pretty soon the only reason to come here will be at the beginning of each season to see what is coming out.

    rh75
    1. “As for the shows we’re picking up from the new season, don’t panic. 2. Some people have wondered why we didn’t do what we did this time (wait and sample some shows before saying we’ll blog something), and this is why. Please read. There hasn’t been a season for a year or more that I can remember where we didn’t end up picking up more shows than we started with. We’re not psychic, we don’t know what’s going to be amazing, so we’re waiting to see. Stick with us a little longer please.

      Stilts
    3. You know, I still remember when I start reading Random Curiosity back in… ye gods… 2006, when it was being run entirely by a single blogger known as Omni. Without meaning any offense to him, it was a relatively small-time blogging site back then, simply because a single blogger can only handle so many shows at a time. After some years he brought in Divine and one or two other people to assist, and the site slowly grew. In 2010 Omni left, Divine took over and transferred the site to the current domain. In the process a bunch of new writers came on board, and everything here has blossomed.

This place is MUCH bigger than it ever used to be, in terms of shows being covered, number of bloggers covering those shows, and the community of readers who come here in response to those things. Things change over time, bloggers come and go, and sometimes it seems like more go than come, but I have faith that the team we have here isn’t going to simply leave us with nothing after all this time. Sure, I would like it if Moomba and Asobi and Seishun and Steroman and some of the other former bloggers were still here to keep giving us more reviews, but they can’t and that’s that. I will trust our team to cover what’s good, and if they truly recognize that they really are falling short despite their best efforts, I will also trust them to know that, and to seek out new bloggers who are capable and willing to blog to Random Curiosity’s standards.

RC is the largest, most active anime blog I am currently aware of. More regular, more bloggers, and (based on the numbers of comments) certainly more readers than any other anime review blog I’ve run across. It’s come a long way to get to that point, and I think the people who are running it deserve some trust from us.

      Wanderer
      1. I couldn’t have said it better myself. Thanks for that Wanderer =) You make (past and present) writers feel appreciated for all the time that we’ve spent on this site.

A lot of readers come and go but for the ones that have stuck as long as “back in the Omni days”, you’ll notice that there have been a lot of changes to RC. It’s no longer just a “single person’s blog” but more like a community of people that like to discuss anime. Omni and Div both had different expectations for the site, but since Div took over, he saw some real potential to grow it. He hired new writers, he kept legacies from “the Omni days” and he even gave new writers the autonomy to add new categories and features. A lot of people complain that we don’t blog enough or “why don’t you do _____?”… but for the older readers that saw the drastic changes we’ve done in the past 2 years, you’ll notice that we’ve actually done a significant amount already. RC has practically turned into my part-time baby in the past 2 years. What time that we take away from blogging more shows might be put into doing podcasts, or previews or creating stuff like a rotating banner. Sometimes people take that for granted, but those are small things that we continuously work on to make the site worthwhile for visitors.

Anyway, that’s my little reminiscent piece for the day. Thanks Wanderer for that sweet comment =) It made my day.

      2. still miss Divine. 🙁
the guy could make me reconsider my initial choices on which anime would I watch, had a very diverse tastes that made him relatable to anyone who even had an inclination of watching an anime, and also blogged several animes per season AHEAD of most other bloggers since he watches it on its schedule and understands japanese.

RC though is still my primary anime blog go-to site, even if I dont follow it much without Divine. most others I know have begun a descent with fewer shows or very late reviews, while others also have revealed their flawed reasonings that I dont bother there anymore. RC may not be in its former glory days with Divine, its still pretty much one of the better blogs out there.

        amado
  11. So many animes but not enough coverage! Any plans to enlist some more bloggers? I know there is probably many people willing to blog even 1 show per season which would satisfy a lot of viewers.

    Stannix
    1. We have no plans to enlist other bloggers. We’re very happy with the writers we have now, and I know for the fact that each of the 1-show bloggers have multiple shows they’ve got their eyes on (myself included), so we’re not likely to stay with only one. We’ve also got some other plans for this coming season which I think you’ll enjoy.

      Stilts
  12. I AM PANICKING AND MAKING LOUD NOISES XBDASJKDBAQDJQWUDQW

Whew, got that out of the way.

Though I gotta say, I’m surprised no one chose Buddy Complex, Nisekoi or Seitokai Yakuindomo off the bat.

    Interesting picks this time around.

I understand no one picking up Tonari no Seki-kun though. All posts would simply say “He trolled, and it was hilarious.”

    EmD
  13. Oh noes, no one covering Robot Girls Z ??!!!?

Kidding apart, I think that the RC writers are doing the RIGHT thing, NOT picking shows ahead of the first episodes airing. Why should they commit themselves to something that may be boring, uninteresting or just plainly bad ?

Stilts, Zani, everyone, I also appreciate that you aren’t afraid to drop shows gone wrong, expecially if you can switch on something else that was unexpectedly good, yet uncovered. I know that it may feel “unprofessional” not seeing the end of what you start, but that’s invalid for things that aren’t beneficial. Keep anime blogging an enjoyable activity for you first, so that it can be a great pleasure for us too.

Let’s the key word be “fun” for everyone in this new year! See you around in the next animes’ comment sections 😉

P.S.: Robot Girls Z doesn’t need any covering for sure, but it may be way funnier than you thought, go watch ep0 eheh

      1. LiA(Lost in America) – Enzo’s blog. kinda known here..also provided as a link in the right sidebar here at RC.
LOL I was certain that the reason for your thought about Enzo’s blogging DnA was because you visited there or something…but maybe it’s just because Enzo did first impression post here on RC.
but as I said, he keeps blogging this in LiA (:

  15. This season for me, give me many ups and downs in expectations. The mecha animes have potential, despite the points I get many doubts. The romantic comedies and life stories abound and there are all types.

The animes that I find interesting are:
    – Seitokai Yakuindomo \(^o^)/
    – Demo Koi ga Shitai Chuunibyou 2 😀
    – Tonari no Seki-kun
    – Buddy complex
    – Witch Craft Works
    – Neppuu Kairiku Bushi Road

And I will continue watching “Golden Time”, “Kill la kill”, “Nagi no Asukara”, “Log Horizon” and “Samurai Flamenco”.

I will watch for other premieres, but I will not give them more than 3 or 1 episode. Nisekoi, “Inari, Konkon, Koi Iroha” and D-frag give me a good feeling, I hope.

Thank you very much to the writers of RandomC for their work and hope to continue together for another year.

I hope for the return of the other writers that be absent, and I hope God bless you all in this new year.

    Shadow74
    1. I forgot to include Tokyo Ravens as one of the anime I watch since fall.

Funny how the end of last year there was much anime that I love and in the beginning of the new year there are many doubts about the current adaptations.

For me it is not so bad, if it not good I can focus on past animes. And above all else, completely solve some important issues in real life.

I wish you all the best for this year \(^o^)/

      Shadow74
  16. great extra picks for Stilts and Takaii. I knew you guys would pick more.

I still hope for 1 or 2 more anime covers. but whatever you feel.
Inari konkon, Nisekoi, wizards barristers seems good picks.
buddy complex, witch craft works, Nourin, Hamatora and Nobunagun and probably others that seem legit picks too.

BTW, any plans about wake up girls?from movie(50 minutes long) and first 2 eps, I think it has great potential and TBH this is quite good for now. definitely worthy for at least first impression on here.

    p.s

Takaii likes his jokes dirty and/or random

    says the ecchi-writer…? 😛

    thedarktower
  17. Nisekoi started off good. And really good. But as the chapter progress it ended up as “watered down” like those long running series in WSJ. I’m fairly disappointed in it. It was really good read after all.
