「呉越同舟」 (Goetsu Doushuu)
“Strange Bedfellows”

Am I the only person who still can’t remember most from the first season? Then again, I think the most important thing is that I remember who Shiro was since he was the best badass.

We’re in Kyoto! THAT MEANS KANSAI-BEN!

Taking a break from the action, this week’s episode toned things down a bit with its focus on the story and throwing a bright spotlight on Ryuuji’s childhood. With scenes of him admiring his father and subsequently getting into fights with him, there’s a lot of room for conjecture left there since the story left the whole thing so open-ended. If anything is clear though, it looks like that Ryuuji’s old man is actively trying to avoid him because of whatever’s happened in the past and he doesn’t seem like that bad of a person — and I say second part with a decent amount of confidence since it’d just be too obvious for him to be the guy trying to take the Impure King’s eye with the way the story transposed his story on top of all this thievery business.

Pulling things back to the more positive side, wasn’t it great to see a different cast of characters than what we’re used to? Instead of the likes of Mephisto and a ton of important people clad in the Order of the True Cross’s uniform, seeing a punch of priests and priestesses all clad in their traditional garb felt nice and refreshing.

Fatherly Love

I don’t know what direction Ryuuji’s story is going to go in relationship with his old man, but when it comes to Rin I hope we get a lot more flashbacks as the series progresses. I can’t remember how many we got during the first season, but boy does it bring some bittersweet vibes whenever Shiro appears on screen. Now, if only the rest of Rin’s classmates would go and show him even a fraction of that love. Because at the rate we’re going, it looks like most of them aren’t going to be talking to each other until the start of season three.

Looking Ahead

With only a itty bitty bit right at the end of the episode being used to progress the story I really hope things kick into gear by next week. There’s a lot of storylines running about right now and the biggest one definitely feels like the most underdeveloped. That said, it feels like everything is working its way to becoming a gigantic cluster of Ao no Exorcist goodness, so I’m excited for whatever payoff is waiting for us by the end. See you later!

  1. One of the things I really enjoyed about this series is how it takes its time to really develop all of the exwires. It’s nice to see in a “typical shounen action” series of this kind. I look forward to each episode. I love this world and its characters.

  2. … well talk about a ton of information bombs in 24 minutes! I should’ve known Bon would be one of the main characters in this arc due to how prominently he was featured in the poster and the opening. I don’t know if that’s an indication that I’ll hate this arc, because I personally don’t like Bon. Then again, I suppose this was coming because Bon has been one of Rin’s most out-spoken foils even when he first met him in Season 1, and they butted heads consistently (the different religions may also have something to do with that). It may also indicate that this season is 1-cour, due to the rapid pace of everything.

Speaking of, I might need to have some background of the history of Kyoto due to all the cultural designs and motifs here. Why do the 3 sisters have the same make-up?

Really, Rin?? You thought people from Kyoto would be refined?? 😀 You need to watch more amine.

Hey, the Kyoto Tower mascot made an appearance last week! I forgot to mention that.

  3. Enjoyed this one. As starss noted above, there was a lot of information to take in. Having read the manga recently, it all made sense to me, but if you read the manga or watched S1 long ago, I can see how things might be a bit fuzzy. Recommend that those who want/need a refresher course read up through chapter 16 or 17 of the manga(17 gets into S2 Ep. 01). Doesn’t take too much time and gives you everything you need going into S2.

Pacing was quick, but not quite to the point I’d say too fast. There were some material cuts though, particularly from Ch 18 (Ep. 2 covered ch. 18 & 19). Nothing critical, but would have been nice if able to keep it (e.g. scene with Izumo & Shiemi). Tying into what sosbrigade1991 wrote (which I agree with), the multiple character background & development is an aspect of the series which I think elevates it compared to other “typical” shounen series. Anime can’t keep everything, but on the other hand, keeping as much as it can when it comes to such things is beneficial. The multi-character focus is something that I think makes the series world seem more “real”, more substantial.

    Bring on Ep. 03.

  4. Can I just say I love the art style, in the midst of so many show with wide sparkly eyes characters and overflowing colorful hair, this show still maintain it’s somewhat real and simple character design. I really like their faces, they’re drawn so round and cute.

This may be a bit spoiler, but I really hope AoE will get to have another season after this ss is over. While exciting, Kyoto arc at most is just a setup for bigger thing to come, and they really need to animate the arc after this arc, that’s where the squad truly get their time to shine and important secrets revealed, and that’s where my baby get to be badass T^T. Let’s cross our finger for another season.
