「和泉マサムネと年下の先輩」 (Izumi Masamune to Toshishita no Senpai)
“Izumi Masamune and The Younger Senpai”

While I love Emily, Hana looks amazing in a swimsuit.

General Impressions

With this week’s episode obviously focusing on Hana-chan, I must say that it was nice to see her finally in the limelight with all of her emotions on display. Compared to the first time we met Hana as she was viciously trying to rip Masamune a new one, this Hana-centric episode finally let us see just who Umezono “Muramsa-sensei” Hana really is. And sure, while this episode may not have been enough to kick the Emily fans over to team Hana, I think it did a good job at removing a lot of the things that weighed down Hana’s character — especially when it came to the story unrelentingly calling her out on all of her little quirks. Instead of this quiet girl who seems to have a glare that could slice through steel, we finally got to meet Hana, the light novel author who is head over heels for a certain author and has a heart that even a fair maiden would be jealous of.

That said, I don’t think there’s any denying that Hana got the short end of the stick when it comes to her confession feeling a little light in terms of substance. Between being introduced much later than Emily and having the story give her character a misleading first impression, I think from an objective standpoint there was no way in hell that she’d be able to move the hearts of both the viewers and Masamune. Something that I feel is really unfortunate since there’s nothing worse than a tiny harem where one girl is obviously underdeveloped but the story still forces things to happen. If you don’t remember, Hana-chan has already tried to ask Masamune out and was essentially rejected. Something that I thought felt strange at the time and still think could have been handled better. Plus, now that this episode exists, why did that even need to happen if Hana was going to get an even better opportunity to reveal her feelings?

Gripes aside, I’m glad to see that Eromanga Sensei seems to be back in full form. With all of our major characters getting a whole episode devoted to them, the story has been doing a good job at filling in the little gaps while sprinkling the seeds of some messy romantic moments to appear in the future. That said, I have this strange feeling anyone on Team Emily or Team Hana is going to be in for a rude awakening next week since it looks like it’s finally Sagiri’s chance to strut some of her stuff.

In any case, I’ll catch you guys next week. See you then!

P.S. My heart almost exploded when Masamune called out to Emily and she turned into a trembling mess. God, so good.

  1. It also doesn’t help that, even though this was a Hana-focused episode, Emily did sort of steal a number of scenes with her own cuteness.

It’s also a shame that, despite the overall development Emily and Hana have now had with Masamune, we all know that Sagiri is just going to “win by default” simply because she’s the title girl. Unless the last couple episodes REALLY pull out the stops for Sagiri’s development (at least it seems like we’ll finally learn just how Sagiri ended up the way she is), it will be hard to really support such a “win”.

  2. You can really see that this anime is indeed written by the oreimo author… Looking at the characters, you can see that Sagiri = Kirino (both are sibling of the male MC though masamune is not related by blood to sagiri and are basically want to be pampered by the aniki and is of course the main route) Emily = Kuroneko (that chuuni factor plus being the first people who got involved frequently with the siblings, basically the second best route) and now Muramasa = Ayase (they are the same in the a way that their love is only one sided aka unrequited love, plus Muramasa has that yan or tsun dere dere tendencies for sure) you could also compare that school mate of Sagiri as Kanako of oreimo and that librarian friend of masamune as that megane friend of Kirino in Oreimo.

      1. We can expect a 2nd season for sure since source material is still on going. But as to 2nd cour nope… Well my basis on this is Oreimo that got a number of OVAs and a 2nd season

Anyway, the way the Boy run to catch his sister. the frames had the right timing, the right flow. Very good animation
