“Marika Does Her First Job”

Ah Marika, such a loveable high school space pirate captain. The way she gets strung along and gives it her all — even when it comes to plastic Bentenmaru models — is just too endearing. Best of all, she’s modest about her abilities as she’s more surprised than anyone else at how quickly she’s thrown into the space pirate thick of things.

“Marika Makes a Decision”

“Electronic Warfare, Start!“ Last week’s episode title led me to believe I’d get to see Odette II’s battle against their unknown enemy Lightning 11, only to hold off after some more strategic build-up, so my anticipation for this episode was a bit higher than usual.

“The Decisive Battle is Late at Night”

The episode title sure is deceiving, as the leisurely exposition continues in the fourth episode of Mouretsu Pirates.

「オデット二世、出航！」 (Odetto Nisei, Shukkou!)
“Odette II, Sets Sail!”

Depending on who you ask, this third episode of Mouretsu Pirates can range anywhere from the most boring and uneventful showing of all time to the most fascinating and immersive one to grace anime in a while.

「私の力、海賊の力」 (Watashi no Chikara, Kaizoku no Chikara)
“My Power, A Pirate’s Power”

Mouretsu Pirates is still very well in the worldbuilding process, taking things slowly and not rushing Marika into the captaincy role that we all know she’ll eventually take on, and I continue to find myself swept up in its mellow pacing — in a good way.

「海賊、罷り通る」 (Kaizoku, Makaritooru)
“Pirates, Coming Through”

There were no real surprises from the premiere of “Bodacious Space Pirates”, but the slightly slower pace indicative of a 26-episode adaptation worked well in establishing the galactic setting and slowly introducing the massive cast of characters.
