「夜の底」 (Yoru no Soko)
“End of the Night”

Episode at a Glance:
With Yoite and Miharu still fighting the Kouga student council, Yukimi and Raikou meet up with Kumohira and Kouichi, and attempt to look for the others. During this time, Shijima wounds Yoite, but Miharu manages to create a distraction with a bookcase so that the two of them can escape. Elsewhere in the basement, Raimei and Juuji run into Subaru and Catalina, who don’t listen to their explanations and simply knock the both of them out. Alone together, Yoite says he won’t die until Miharu fulfills his end of the promise, so he tells him to go to Yukimi, but Miharu refuses to leave, thinking that Yoite will be killed by the time he gets back. Miharu then explains that there’s a female “fairy” form of the Shinrabanshou inside him that he’s never told anyone about, who he feels can allow him to use the hijutsu’s powers. Shijima then appears above them and continues her attack, ending their conversation. While Yoite is able to hit her with his Kira, she seems unphased by it, and then proceeds to attack Miharu. With the Shinrabanshou host grasping for air, she tells Yoite how Miharu probably sees him and his request as a bother. This causes Yoite to save Miharu, but he gets stabbed in the back by Catalina in the process.

Now heavily wounded, Yoite uses his forbidden technique on the ceiling to get away again. Back above ground level, Yukimi and the others are trying to interrogate some students, but they easily manage to escape. Kannuki then appears, along with Kouichi held at gunpoint, and tells everyone to throw their weapons aside. Kouichi quickly figures that Kannuki is after Kouga’s forbidden technique, Daya, which the crazy teacher explains requires the sacrifices of many young ninjas in order to obtain (à la, Philosopher’s Stone in Full Metal Alchemist…?). As for the student council girls, Kannuki believes that they’re trying to acquire Daya in the same way, except they plan to use it to save the school director. Unbeknownst to him though, the girls are only trying to retrieve the forbidden scroll that Kannuki threatened out of the director.

On Miharu’s end of things, Yoite is bleeding to death and asks Miharu for help since he doesn’t want to die. This makes Miharu realize how little he knows about Yoite, including his reason for wanting to disappear, but wants to know now, so he pleads out loud for the Shinrabanshou’s help. However, Shijima then appears again and drugs Miharu, causing him to pass out. Back above, Yukimi creates a diversion for Kouichi using a ballpoint pen bomb (hey, I guess he found out where to buy pens after all), after which him and Raikou rush underground. Kouchi on the other hand, is beating up Kannuki with his bare hands, when Kumohira steps in to stop him. Amazed the he can be doing something like that at a time like this, Kouichi gets distracted and then shot in the back. Before Kouichi collapses though, he blames Kumohira and says he’ll kill Miharu too if he keeps this up.

Back underground, Miharu wakes up and is surrounded by a green aura and electricity, while his body becomes covered with Shinrabanshou text.

Impressions:
Wow Kumohira-sensei, you fail by saving the enemy and letting your student get killed. I bet Kouichi wishes he joined the Kairoushuu now, especially after Raikou invited him to do so at anytime. I mean, Kouichi didn’t even pull out a weapon yet and was just beating Kannuki with his fists, and Kumohira still stopped him. Anyway, while I’m not too surprised Yoite was defeated with it being three on one and him protecting Miharu at the same time, I’m a bit surprised that Raimei and Juuji were taken out so easily. I guess they weren’t trying to fight back, but if that were the case, you’d think they’d still try to dodge Subaru’s attacks better. I realize Nabari isn’t about the ridiculously overpowered ninjas and long dragged out fights, meaning that even the most skilled people can be defeated/killed in an instant, but I just expected a little more from Raimei and Juuji than that. Shijima on the other hand was like a little demonic monster, as she was just having her way with that claw of hers and smiling all the way. Kind of scary actually, especially seeing how petite she is.

In the most significant turn of events though, Miharu has finally unleashed his Shinrabanshou powers, which makes me wonder how grand the first display of them will be in the anime, seeing as Miharu hasn’t shown a single ninja technique yet. If you aren’t aware already, up to this point, the manga had already shown Miharu using some techniques (like vanishing), but the anime adaptation seems to have purposely made Miharu skill-less up until now. Because of this, I expect the first display of his hijutsu to be more significant, so I’m eagering anticipating how he’ll kick some ass and (probably) save Yoite and Kouichi. I don’t really foresee either of them dying at this point (especially Yoite), but I guess it is possible for Kouichi to be written off here to develop Kumohira’s character further. Finally, speaking of the manga, I did pick up all eight volumes of it while in Japan, but am holding off reading them for now. I only want to read what the anime has aired up to though, so that’s one of the reasons why I’m in no hurry to get to them (with time being the other).

Next time, Miharu turns super-saiyan Shinrabanshou and powers up! Kannuki is also holding the school director at gunpoint, so it looks like Kumohira didn’t even kill him after he shot Kouichi. Double fail.

  1. So Yoite gets his ass kicked and Miharu finally gets to wreak some havoc? I guess this arc is the most exciting so far- then again three, no wait four-sided conflicts tend to be that way. A shame they don’t happen too often in anime.

  5. It’s not intense yaoi or yaoi even. Although I do sense some weird brotherly love between them which somewhat makes me sick. The action is probably the only thing that keeps me there.

  6. I doubt Kouichi is gonna die since they haven’t even delved in his part of the story yet. And Kumohira is really starting to annoy me with his pacifistic (non-killing at least) self. You’re a ninja for crying out loud! Man up!

  7. Yet again, Kumohira proves how useless he is… I mean seriously, with that sense of good/bad he shouldn’t even be part of the world of Nabari… He’s a disgrace.

^The above message is in no way connected to my adoration for Aizawa. 😉

  8. Ridiculous episode. To think that Yoite and Miharu (and others for that matter) couldn’t wipe out this incredibly weak Student Council is maddeningly absurd. I feel this is yet another anime like Naruto & Bleach where the balance of powers established in previous episodes COMPLETELY fails to keep up throughout the next ones.

  9. bah, poor Raimei, pwned again T_T

@Dima: I get the impression Yoite doesn’t have much lifeforce left to power the Kira, so wasn’t fighting at his full potential.

  11. while most of people get scared for yaoi Nabari no Ou has such a tint of seewt Shounen-ai that doesn’t scare non-yaoi people off
I do believe they can stand the tiny weeny bit of SA (if there is) for the amazing and intriguing story that Nabari no Ou is plus even if there is SA is short is weak and there is more heteron in there than any other thing….

  12. I personally think Miharu and Yoite would be cute together XD no really..

it’s sort of obvious that gau has feelings for Reikou, although I doubt it’s both ways.

A lot of people who comment on the show have a problem with the characters: Reikou, Gau, Miharu (dont diss Miharu! he’s awsome), and Yoite. Well I have a simple solution for that… don’t watch the show. honestly, if you’re so homophobic that you can’t even stand two fictional male characters caring about each other or getting the least bit close.. then you should just lock yourself up in an empty room for the rest of your life.
