「Judgment 蘇る白銀!」 (Judgment. Yomigaeru Shirogane!)
“Judgment. The Resurrected Silver!”

Episode at a Glance:
Despite falling into a spiked pit, Weiser is able to survive somehow, unlike the others before him. Meanwhile, Pokota is clashing with Ducuris in the Zanaffar research room, with Lina and her group about to do the same down in the coliseum. Upon questioning Ducuris why he’s doing this instead of saving Taforashia, Pokota is reminded of how their city fell ill to the epidemic, how Rezo the Red Priest came along and offered to place everyone into an icy slumber until a cure is found, and how Ducuris and his consciousness were transferred into their current temporary bodies so that they can revive everyone one day. Back in the present, Ducuris is still bent on revenge because Taforashia received no help, but Weiser suddenly falls through the ceiling and informs them both about the relief supplies that were gathered but never made it to their city. Down in the coliseum, the respective fights continue, with Gioconda commending Gourry on his sword skills and saying he’s fit to be her fifth husband. Zuuma later releases his black fog and attacks Amelia and Zelgadis while Lina is left in the dark and unable to cast spells. However, she uses her Ragna Blade, a darkness spell not nullified by the fog, and charges at Zuuma, only to end up impaling Ozel when she jumps in front to protect him.

With the fog dispersed, Lina finds herself in a bind, so Gourry throws his stone sword at Zuuma, leaving himself defenseless. Pokota shows up though and gives him the Sword of Light to use. Ducuris arrives shortly after and tells Gioconda that he has things to ask her. With Gourry unable to land a blow on Zuuma, he picks up the remnants of the stone sword and dual wields in a frenzy. Seeing the pace at which they’re fighting, Lina is unable to attack without risking hitting Gourry, so she casts a dark mist to blind Zuuma. Switching hands in mid-air, Gourry is able to fool Zuuma and cut off his claw with the Sword of Light, after which Lina lands another Flare Arrow, forcing him to retreat. With Gioconda surrounded, she admits to being involved with the relief supplies, which she claims wouldn’t have helped anyway. Angered, Ducuris wants to kill her, but Amelia and Weiser try to stop him by saying they should put her through a proper trial. Claiming that would do nothing for Taforashia’s suffering, he slashes her anyway, revealing the Zanaffar armor she’s been wearing underneath. Ducuris tells Gioconda that he’s going to give her a fate worse than death, after which Xellos warns everyone to be careful since that’s a completed Zanaffar armor she’s wearing. With the Sword of Light reacting to it, Gioconda’s armor begins to break down, before finally disappearing in a flash of light along with her, leaving the Evil Beast Zanaffar in their place.

Impressions:
Well, Weiser survived as expected, but surprisingly proved to be the reason why Ducuris came to his senses. The fights this episode were a treat to watch since Xellos watched idly from sidelines (with popcorn in hand). Aside from Ozel pulling some magical girl Sailor Moon-like Windy Shield, the highlights were definitely Lina’s Ragna Blade and Gourry with a Sword of Light again. There’s just something that sends chills down your spine when you hear Lina scream, “RAGNA BLADE!”, and similarly when Gourry screams, “HIKARI WO!” Given how Xellos is always scheming things, it comes as no surprise that he didn’t bother helping Gioconda when everyone had her surrounded. In fact, it seems like he was quite happy about Ducuris cutting through the completed Zanaffar armor she’s been wearing all this time, and releasing the Evil Beast Zanaffar. The preview shows Ducuris talking to it though, so I’m a bit curious about what’s happening there.

On a separate note, I find this commercial break shot a bit ecchi.

  1. I know what you mean, Divine. There’s…I guess a real sense of emergency in Lina’s voice when she uses the Ragna Blade/Giga Slave that gives it a very different feel compared to her Dragu Slave incantations.

    Well, the complete Zanafa Armor was where Gioconda got her ridiculous sense of confidence. I always felt it was rather odd for her to be wielding such a large sword and appear so bloodthirsty for battle without appearing to be particularly formidable (like Prince Phil), but this explains it.

    Nothing makes Xellos quite happy like uproar. :O The real Zanafa Armor that is always a threat to the Mazoku’s survival is destroyed, it releases the beast Zanafar within which will surely create destruction and madness = two birds with one stone. ^^;

    The previews suggest Ducuris being able to somehow control Zanafar which I thought wasn’t possible, so this is interesting.

  2. Oh, I really enjoyed Gourry’s fighting. His dual wielding was amazing and I kinda lament the fact he doesn’t do that more often. :)It was also interesting to see Zelgadis in such a pinch too since he’s usually not affected greatly by people’s attacks. Not that I want him to suffer mind you, but it is a nice change of pace.

  3. Hearing Gourry say, “I’m not stupid.” after Zuuma exclaims that he switched swords made me laugh out loud. Though its probably true – Gourry’s just an idiot when it comes to everything else but sword fighting.

  4. But the sad thing is, well. IMO, the whole Laguna Blade is something you use to kill something VERY POWERFUL or destroy an annoying barrier/wall/forcefield. Using against a human like Zuuma… kinda anti-dramatic. (Not to mention, it missed Zuuma and it didn’t even kill the doll that it hit…) I mean, she used this move against Mazoku like Kanzel/Gaav/etc. Seriously, this move nukes Mazoku but now can’t even kill a doll?

    And Gourry actually got HIT while fighting a woman?! (well, the armor protected him) And he needs something OTHER then Sword of Light to again, fight a human? Man, these guys slacked off a bit too much after 10 years of non, “save the world crisis” battles.

    Then again, the whole villain cast of this season is so sub-par is powerlevels compared to NEXT/TRY that it can’t be helped I guess.

    Hmm, they didn’t show what happened to Ozel afterward, but I’m assuming she was killed by the Ragna Blade.

    Gourry wasn’t technically hit, since Gioconda just held him at sword-point and ridiculed him for a bit. Gourry did let his guard down when he threw his sword at Zuuma though, so if Gioconda wanted to, she could’ve hit him.

    As for slacking off, maybe they ate too much while doing nothing. =)

  6. Finally, some Slayers-style brawl! Zuuma’s revelation of Lina being his reason to be an assassin is interesting. Need to remember about his identity in the novels, or they might just come up with something surprising for this adaptation. Nice going with Zannafer’s appearance being closer to what it had in the novels.

    @dzero7:
    I too have noticed that the accuracy on power levels vary in this series as opposed to the older ones, but to use too weak or too strong a spell on certain enemies, thus creating some “WTF moments” is not unheard of even in the older anime. Zuuma though, is quite a formidable opponent in the novels, although the use of a Ragna Blade was rather overkill for his incantation in this anime. Maybe it was used as other spells, even strong ones such as Dragon Slave are not casteable. Show Spoiler ▼

  7. hey, to all those who said that Lina and crew have gotten sloppy or weak when they fought Zumma/Zooma, I think you should read this website: http://kanzaka.wikia.com/wiki/Seigram. I’m not saying it’s absolutely the truth for the series, but you never know, Seigram may have been able to somehow save himself or teleport just when he got hit, and now he wants his revenge. I mean, we were all SO SO sure up until now that Rezo was completely gone…you never know.;)

  8. Also, one other thing, especially for chimasternmay, but for everybody else too. This series WILL NOT end in just 13 episodes! The guy on Wikipedia got it wrong, and here’s why:
    http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2008-09-06/new-slayers-tv-anime-series-officially-confirmed
    Now notice where it says in this news report that Hajime Kanzaka said the story will continue for half a year. well…I have been watching this anime series now for the past 2 and a half months on Japanese TV, and by the end of September, which is when episode 13 will come out on Japanese TV, the series will only have been going on for 3 MONTHS! That’s right, folks, they’re probably going to take a break (when it says in the news link “with a break in between”) for maybe a month, which means there might not be any new episodes coming out for us to watch in October :(, but then they will probably continue releasing the second half in November. So don’t worry about a thing, chimasternmay! or any of you for that matter!
