「おねえちゃんとあそぼう」 (Oneechyan to Asobou)
“Come Play With Your Big Sister”

They say you can’t have your cake and eat it but up until today it always felt like Isami was living the high life. A professional model with a stylish body and the horrible cooking skills to back it up — what more could you ask for? Which is why I really enjoyed this week’s look at another side of her.

Older Sister Blues

I don’t think we ever got a clear explanation behind what really was bothering Isami but boy was it fun to finally see her prominently highlighted for half of the episode. Usually appearing for a few minutes at most, getting to see her outside of the house and in normal clothing was a nice surprise. What threw me for a loop though was seeing just how much of a sis-con she really was! Maybe I’m being a bit heavy handed with the term but I don’t think anyone can deny that Shinobu’s almost-fail is what knocked some liveliness back into Asami. Maybe it’s just the sisterly bond the two share? In any case, it was nice that the group was able to get Asami out of her funk and back into her normal self.

Kuzehashi-Sensei

Ever since that one episode a few weeks ago where Kuzuhashi-sensei managed to somewhat overcome that cold exterior of hers, I’ve been afraid that we’d see less and less of her. And while that may have become somewhat true, I can also appreciate that she now brings something unique to the table every time the show throws her into the fray. From showing off more and more of her closet deredere to revealing what she looks like out of school, the show is constantly shaving more and more layers off of her with each passing episode. At the rate we’re going, I wouldn’t be surprised if we got an episode where she came to teach looking like Karasuma-sensei!

The Tale of The Straw Millionaire

Living over in the states, we don’t typically get stories of building your wealth off of trading goods. Instead being taught that a combination of hard work, effort, and a bit of luck will eventually lead you to your dreams, it’s an ideal that somewhat contrasts with the Straw Millionaire story. Sure you could argue that he’s working hard by creating value out of nothing for a stranger and as enticing as building a fortune from nothing sounds, going about it in that fashion just doesn’t jive well with me. At the end of the day though, so long as everyone gets something that’s of equal or more value to the item they’re trading, everyone comes out a winner right? Right?

Looking Ahead

This episode ended up being a lot more interesting that I thought it’d be. From giving Isami a proper episode to finally giving us a proper introduction to Honoka, it felt like the show managed to squeeze a lot out of a mere twenty or so odd minutes. Luckily, it looks like Kuzehashi-sensei is going to get thrown back into the ring next week which should mean at the very least we’ll get to see a bunch of Karen messing around with her! Until then, make sure to stay safe out there \o\

  1. Alice, I don’t think becoming a millionaire by just working your way up works anymore. … ooooh I see you can’t use cash! NOW the tale sounds interesting.

It’s great seeing a show like this for once where friends are open about their feelings.

  2. I can’t stop but think there is something more cynical behind the Tale. I beg to differ and I see no problem in speculative wealth creation. What is of value is hugely subjective – and that is why there are concepts such as consumer surplus and deadweight loss in the first place.
