Legend:

Now that every show has had a few episodes to make its case—some of them for the second time—it’s time to tell you what we’ll be blogging this season. This is Random Curiosity’s Summer 2020 blogging schedule.

As always, this is a tentative overview of our plans for the new season . . . is what we used to say, but with bunches of episodes under our belts, we’re pretty confident in our picks. Will some of them fall flat in the home stretch? Probably. This is what we’re going with for now.

As far as coverage goes, this is obviously a light schedule. Part of that has to do with the relative lack of strength in this season’s anime crop, as we had writers who were looking for shows not able to find anything they wanted to blog. (Sometimes the mismatch between what can use coverage and who has extra capacity/their anime taste just be like that.) The other part is, of course, Corona-chan, as the same societal headwinds that many are experiencing right now (including in the anime industry) are impacting our writers as well. I don’t want to be a downer, that’s just how it is. Times are tough, in anime and elsewhere.

So once again, I’ll use this space to encourage everyone to stay home (as much as you can), stay safe, stay healthy, and wear a mask. On these, at least, we’re better suited to do the right thing compared to our non-nerd counterparts. Stay home (and catch up on our anime backlog)? We’ve been training for this our whole lives. Wear masks (like we’ve been seeing anime characters wear for years)? Nothing weird about wearing a mask. This is all easy stuff for us! And hopefully, the more everyone does their part, the sooner the range of anime we’re treated to each season will be back to its old size and quality, and the more time our staff will have to actually write about them.

That’s it for this time. Thank you as always, and if anything changes, we’ll be sure to update this post. Cheers!

  1. Looks like a good line-up, although I would like Deca-Dence to get blogged, since it’s first two episodes were pretty great, especially the plot twist in ep.2.

Also not surprised GoH isn’t being blogged. Although I’ve seen the hype, the series hasn’t captivated me at all. Up untill this point it seems like a pretty generic battle shounen, without interesting characters.

    1. I’ll second the feelings around Deca-Dence. Of those that didn’t make the cut, it’s the most interesting to me. I have no clue what’s gonna happen next but I’m looking forward to it.

    1. They could also have real world commitments, which they have no obligation to reveal on a public website which may take their time away from blogging. I wouldn’t read much into a staff member taking a break from a particular season.

      1. As Lyfe says a lot of our coverage choices are down to other commitments. Stuff like GoH and likely Deca-Dence aren’t being covered for this reason no matter how much some of us are interested in them.

  2. Coronavirus forced the likes of Haikyu, Danmachi Season 3, Mahouka, Higurashi, and a few shows no one really cares about from July to the Fall season.

Would have transformed the Summer season entirely had these shows aired as normal.

  3. Did I see this correctly? That Kanokari would just be dropped after the 3rd episode? You’d be doing a great disservice to Kanokari fans if your coverage stopped then and there, somebody must still cover that.

    1. Committing to it is rattling around in my mind, but unless I get lucky with my weekend obligations in the next week or so I don’t know if I’ll have the time to cover both Railgun and Kanokari. Unfortunately just another case of only being able to choose one.

      1. In that case, should the worst happen, please allow me to cover it as I want to see this through to the end (in fairness, my email is there). Another option would be to ask any of the other contributors.

  4. I pretty much agree with every choice shown here, except that I do wish someone was covering Fruits Basket. I know there are some discussions elsewhere, but I always enjoyed the RC spin on this when you were covering it. FWIW…

  5. Sorry to say, but the fact that most of the show covered are practical the usual suspects, while new and interesting shows (like Deca-Dence) are not blogged is pushing me away from the site. Unfortunately Random Curiosity has been declining for a long time and right now it feels like a recap of mainstream things that everyone already watch or knows. You really need to put something new in the coverage, otherwise the site will continue the downward spiral.

    1. Hence this is the prime reason why I want to push forward my application as a writer contributor: to give due voice to the series that tends to get the short end of this cherrypicking. I hope the writers themselves see this sad reality by now.

  6. Covered shows:
Maou Gakuin no Futekigousha – This was an unexpected pick for coverage considering the show’s textbook plot elements/tropes already seen before. But the mystery of who erased Anoth’s name from history (and whether that person is still alive and pulling the strings) is still a pretty good hook to continue with the series. And that fourth episode…

Enen no Shouboutai: Ni no Shou – I’m just glad that I still (more or less) remember what happened to the show’s previous season. Just raring to see where the story goes from there.

Re:Zero season 2 – LOL, after just one scene in episode 3, Echidna’s already considered “best girl” material–to the point where she already has her own rapidly growing subreddit, “r/CultOfEchidna”. (Denied/Comatose Best Girl: “AAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!”) And I haven’t been attracted to a character voiced by Maaya Sakamoto since Gundam SEED DESTINY‘s Lunamaria Hawke and Bakemonogatari‘s Shinobu.

Uzaki-chan wa Asobitai! – It’s nice to have a slice-of-life rom-com that actually has more laughs than cringe. And the “gravitational pull” of Uzaki herself is not something to be underestimated.

Also looking forward to settling in and watching:
    Railgun T (covered)
    OreGairu Kan (covered)
No Guns Life season 2 (not covered)
Gundam Build Divers Re:Rise (not covered)
Shokugeki no Souma: Gou no Sara (not covered)

    Not covered:
Monster Musume no Oisha-san – I’m finding that the worldbuilding in this series is just as good as (if not better than) Ishuzoku Reviewers. And I gotta love how nonchalant and professional Dr. Litbeit is while administering treatment to the “monstergirl of the week” (even with the monstergirls’ suggestive moans), as well as the fact that said monstergirls become recurring characters in their own right.

Kanojo, Okarishimasu – A bit sad that this is going the way of DomeKano in terms of weekly coverage. Might as well bring some popcorn and watch the trainwreck unfold (even though the cringy moments do get unbearable). Also found out that shy girl Sumi has her own spinoff manga, Kanojo, Hitomishirimasu.

Dokyuu Hentai HxEros – Would still take this (or Shokugeki no Souma: Gou no Sara) over SAO, TBH. But… you do you. (Also see next entry below.)

Peter Grill to Kenja no Jikan – Looks like “naughty tentacles” are back on the menu, boys! Also, full-frontal “Barbie doll anatomy” from a haughty loli-looking elf… Yeesh, I’m pretty sure that’s an ecchi anime sin.

  7. If you are partial to Specialty Furniture and love to decorate your home with beautiful and elegant furniture items,
then recliner chairs may be the right selection for you. They just
help you feel comfortable within your home, which you were hoping to find an extended time.
If necessary, you may have to work with a very soap with tepid to warm water
on a soft clean cloth to take out any traces with the stain from
    the leather recliner chair.
