「 冬の終わりと出発の日」 (Fuyu no Owari to Shuppatsu no Hi)
“Winter’s End and the Day of Departure”

This week’s Yuru Camp gives us another preparation arc for the girls as they get ready for a trip to Izu for their first major trip as Spring begins to rear its head. But while other preparation episodes focused on how particular girls are gathering resources, this episode sets the stage for the girls to make their preparations with the help of their family members.

Even though loose lips sink ships with Nadeshiko’s mom and sister letting it slip that Rin followed Nadeshiko and was a worrywart about it all, her family is still eager to help her get back in the saddle with camping. This time around, her dad ends up offering the most help as he gives her the idea to prep up a dried fish recipe when she gets to the campgrounds considering how dried fish is one of Izu’s niches.

Of course, her dad also expects something in return as a large sum of his allowance money for the trip will be going into bringing home some treats for the family. But all in all, it’s nice to see their dad be somewhat involved with her travels.

But if you want to talk about familiarity, Rin’s family has a particular history with traveling to Izu that makes them easy to rely on for the trip. This was a wonderful episode for giving Rin some time to bond with the men of her family with her dad helping her set up a USB charger on her moped and her grandfather talking about their mutual interests as he gives her an important gift for the road ahead.

It was also funny to see Rin’s mom get flustered as Rin learns that she got a lot of mileage out of traveling and enjoyed going out and about with Rin’s dad and grandfather. Overall, it was a pleasant surprise to see that much of their trust in Rin traveling by herself and with friends came with their own experiences venturing out and traveling together.

On a final note, the episode also gave us a glimpse at the home lives of some of the other characters. One of the conditions of the Izu trip is to let Aoi’s little sister come along to get a glimpse of the Capybara bathing. It was also more than welcome to get a glimpse of Toba-sensei’s private life with her sister being all too aware of her ability to hold her liquor. She might have had to stay sober as a promise to Chiaki to encourage her to study, but at the very least, she’s honoring the conditions of their deal and is waiting til the right time to open up the beers in her fridge.

  1. I was wondering why there was birthday cake in the intro so it was for Nadeshiko and Aoi’s birthday same day too? also nice seeing Rin spending time with her grandfather but thanks to her dad now I want to know what her mom was like?

  2. It was great seeing Rin’s family bonding over her travel preparations. The part between her and her grandfather was especially moving. Even though we’ve seen their interactions before, this one was rather special. Get the feeling Rin felt that way too.

On another note, I think this is the most normal grandfather-grandchild interaction I’ve seen in anime. Really like it too. Maybe because it’s easier to empathise?
