「失望の典災」 (Shitsubou no Tensai)
“Despair Genius”

Hear that? It’s raiding time. And not just any raiding time, hip and spry raiding. Or, you know, the inexperienced clusterf*ck variety. Yeah the kids finally got into the thick of things this week, and as expected it didn’t go entirely by plan. Got to leave something for the finale to capitalize on you know.

Probably no one’s surprise Log Horizon decided to indulge once again in the intricacies of MMORPG raids and their various quirks, albeit now with less focus on the details than the second season’s version. Regardless of how overbearing Log Horizon can feel at times with its homage to (and emphasis on) online RPGs, this fight is probably one of best it’s shown structure-wise: explanations were kept to a minimum, the raid party didn’t spend too long on working through fears and motivations, and there’s another nice twist in some serious memory loss to help a fire lit under everyone involved. Also hilariously answering what happened to all those Tetra-collected scales, beautiful. I might have my problems with Minori and the other kids, but credit where credit is due: these kids as shown are now able to stand on their own and are no longer in need of any hand holding.

Of course everything isn’t that peachy courtesy of that Genius-induced memory loss. While pretty obvious Minori and the rest will find a way to defeat this threat (not only because Akatsuki and her adorable attachment to role playing helps keep things from really breaking apart), the cost of victory is something wholly unknown. Just how expansive is that memory loss? Are they simply small fragments like during any “normal” Adventurer death, or are we now talking significant moments in the past? And is there the potential to recover said memories? It’s not a stretch to imagine the Genius memory seizure is different than Elder Tale’s system for example – and that their memory repository could be reclaimed. Plenty of interesting questions are raised thanks to this raid, but getting answers to them is definitely going to take some time.

After all, next week is finale week, and rather than another infodump, something tells me the time will be spent having this season go out with a bang.

  1. Thanks for this informative article. I would like to add that this anime is about the fictional computer game Elder tale. There are 12 classes, 10 subclasses and 35 role-playing subclasses in the Elder tale game. The 12 classes are divided into four groups according to their base class. Of these base classes, the ubiquitous Tank / Healer / DPS roles are commonly found in MMORPGs. The Elder tale DPS classes are divided into two groups of base classes that are responsible for physical and magical support, for example, Assassin and Wizard. Their main goal is mainly centered around DPS to defeat enemies as quickly as possible, while Bard and Wizard are both class oriented for low damage output and abilities. Each base class has three classes that belong to its group – and there are four base classes for all – together there are 12 classes. I was able to gather this information from educational videos in tik-tok, in which the authors share information about various anime. I found a lot of similar videos there and noticed that most of them had more than 56 thousand likes! I am sure this is because their authors used the services of https://viplikes.net/buy-tiktok-likes to quickly cheat their number.
