「霜の竜王」 (Shimo no Ryuuou)
“Frost Dragon Lord”
Honestly not that big an episode for Overlord this week. Oh sure, dragons were conquered and prairie dogs put in their place, but besides Ainz doing what Ainz does best? A question for the ages. Or in this case Demiurge, because oh boy does this guy have the best grasp on Ainz’s mindset. Even if Ainz himself cannot yet comprehend his own greatness.
One of the funny things for me this season is how hot and cold each week is turning out. Whereas one episode happens to check every box in the “why I love Overlord” field, the next seemingly breaks convention and falls back onto the usual adaptation shenanigans which affected prior seasons. This episode was effectively case in point, where in the span of half an hour we got the neighbourhood frost dragons turned into veritable pets, the Quagoa beaten into a bloody pulp, and Shalltear trying to go for the golden shower ending. Alright, Shalltear and that childlike focus on displaying satisfaction was pretty funny (I feel you Aura), but the speed of the developments here once again took away from the effect the they could’ve otherwise had. When it comes to Overlord and its world slow and steady very much wins the race.
The one positive for what we did get this time, however, is that the board is now pretty swept clean and ready for new fun and games to commence. Demiurge’s appearance for example heralds a return to the rivalry and scheming of both Re-Estize and Empire, and also a return to the subplot involving one princess and her pledged loyalty to Ainz and company. In short what’s up next will be one bony boy finally finding use for Jircniv’s submission and also properly putting Re-Estize in its place. After all, doubt too many have forgotten about Albedo’s courtship plights while playing ambassador, or even the scheming Demiurge has gotten up to while out of the spotlight.
And now with the dwarves suitably taken care of, there’s only target left before the next phase of world conquest by skeleton can properly kick off.
So Ains can just Grasp-Heart anyone? I’m guessing he couldn’t do that to Shaltear in Season 1 when they fought? I like Overlord fine, it’s fun to watch Ains do what he does. I guess I am curious if he’ll ever find opposition? Feels like at this rate he’s just going to succeed at taking over the world and have no challenge doing it. If that does happen it’s alright. I think eventually there needs to be some wrench in the gears because things have been going a little too well…
Grasp Heart only work on opponent that has no instant death resistance, which most high level players have. It didn’t work on undead too
It’s funny that Shaltear was spot on in saying that Ainz made a mistake in assuming that there were strong creatures due to her not being smart enough to overthink stuffs but got influenced otherwise by others.
It was a nice break watching Ainz completing a traditional RPG quest, something that he is extremely proficient at. Passing impassable obstacles, avoiding deadly traps in a maze, slaughtering thousands of minions, beating the bosses, and unlocking the treasure vault – he’s done this so many times back in YGGDRASIL that he really doesn’t have to think about it. Now back to his NPC and political worries.
