「張り巡らされた罠」 (Harimegurasaseta Wana)
“Well-prepared Traps”

Well, did promise things were going to get interesting and Overlord certainly delivered on that front. From the start of putting bony boot (or is that a robe?) on the face of upstart mortals to dropping some seriously enlarged tidbits on future developments, we got it all and then some this time. And the best part is the fight for Re-Estize’s capital hasn’t even begun.

Much as alluded to over the past couple of episodes, Azuth happens to be both the first true threat to Ainz and company as well as being, well, not that big a threat overall. Albedo shows the true extent of his abilities here, as the powers provided by his suit do well enough against Ainz Ooal Gown’s various mobs, but run into serious trouble the moment a Floor Guardian enters the picture. Honestly makes sense given how Overlord has gone to date – i.e. skeleton does power fantasy – though leaves me a tad disappointed four seasons has only yielded a threat to this degree. Somehow you’d imagine someone would’ve come across a similar weapon before now capable of doing the same.

Of course the above is slightly disingenuous in Azuth isn’t alone in his powers courtesy of Tsa, himself arguably the dragon Ainz was originally curious in obtaining – rather than, you know, the dragons found instead (*insert we have dragons at home meme here*). While Tsa has been shown off before in an earlier season, the commentary here should be enough indication of what to expect: other beings besides Ainz are aware of player existence, Ainz is very likely not the only player currently active, and others have the capability of actually holding their own against Ainz and friends. Sure, this was technically a fight with Pandora’s Actor (in all its hilarity), but one shouldn’t ignore the implications, especially if it sees Tsa and others like him try pressuring Ainz more given the chuckle-worthy idea he’s the NPC to Albedo’s player character. When it comes to this franchise things are always teased well in advance, and this is certainly the first moment hinting towards significant things coming down the pipeline.

It’s only a question of what thing happens first following Re-Estize’s demise, and whether one poor innocent Riku Aganeia gets found and thoroughly tortured by the bony boy before it happens.

  1. I never noticed in my initial viewing is the absence of the red orb on Pandora Ainz; the red orb Ainz has usually perched on his abdomen. The absence of the orb is quite important to the plot where Pandora Ainz was not able to leave the world isolation barrier and Albedo being able to, giving reason for the dragon to mistake Albedo for being the Player and Ainz the NPC. Kudos to the studio for including this detail.

  2. This season feels so lifeless, so rushed. After today, I dont really know how I feel about overlord. I really like the premise, the characters and the story itself but when every episode skips quite a bit of story i dont know how we can still care for it?

    1. Have to remember the anime is basically glorified marketing for the light novels so it shouldn’t be too surprising we get chopping and rushing galore. You’re not wrong about the indifference though; I’ve been swinging between enjoyment and near boredom almost biweekly, entirely because certain moments were better adapted than others.

Really is weird (and disappointing) how a series this popular got the shaft in terms of funding from season two onward.

  3. Felt kinda silly I didn’t notice it was Pandora’s Actor early on. Albedo’s tone before engaging should’ve been the biggest hint of all. None of the guardians talk that way to Ainz.

That said, real happy seeing Albedo in full armour again. One of the hottest fully covered design I’ve seen. Slightly disappointed she wasn’t allowed to maim that dragon’s armour.

  4. Too true the anime is a blatant advert for the LightNovels. At least a lot of details are left in the LN that anyone buying and reading them will get a whole lot of info and side story and hints and things to figure out. Rewatching the anime would become even more intriguing after a full read of the LNs.
