「水の都のファナティック」 (Mizu no Miyako no Fanatikku)
“Fanatics of the Water City”

A relatively quiet week for the Megumin shenanigans, as the usual displays of explosive talent were replaced by more tempered preparation of the real beginnings of the quintessential Konosuba experience. Or, you know, just another day in the life of Megumin being Megumin while Yunyun suffers all the more for it. Yeah yeah, it might read like I’m growing bored of this show now, but I assure you that’s far from the case.

With how much was teased previously about major devious happenings in the land of Arcanreita, it could surprise some at the whole thing being a red herring – until it’s remembered this is Konosuba where bait and switch is just another Wednesday. For all I would’ve enjoyed the likes of Arnes playing water-based jokes for the sake of kidnapping rescuing Chomusuke, to have Zesta (or someone related to her) do the deed because love of the big and bouncy overcame memory of chores does lead to a hearty chuckle, especially when paired with Yunyun and Cicily both ending the arc on an emphatic note. As usual it’s nothing we haven’t seen before, but Konosuba still finds a way to keep it funny and a blast to see. At least if your name isn’t Arnes.

Speaking of poor demon girls, lo and behold her being the focus of this season’s final arc and the groundwork for Konosuba’s first season hijinks. While incredibly unlikely we’ll see major developments before all is said and done, between Arnes now basically being Konosuba’s Team Rocket experience and Megumin on the prowl for Wiz (because who else at this stage?) there are bound to be a few more ridiculous (read: hilarious) moments before the close. Yunyun after all has to go off to do her thing, Megumin has to prove to the local Axel adventurers what makes her exclusively worthy of joining Kazuma’s party, and the whole demon story involving Arnes and Chomusuke needs some measure of closure.

We may not get all the answers, but I seriously doubt this little side-story will leave off on a quiet note. Explosions demand it.

  1. Ah, Megumin… From being introduced to the often-pitiless world of working adults back in episode 6, to finding herself in Arcanretia involved with Axis Cult shenanigans these last two episodes (explaining why the Axis Cult was even more pushy than they already are in recruiting new members–and why Megumin reacted the way she did upon revisiting Arcanretia with Kazuma, Aqua, Darkness and Wiz in KonoSuba season 2), to embarrassingly being found by Yunyun (who happened to deliver a letter that gets the people of Arcanretia in an uproar).

Had a chuckle at Cecily (Ai Fairouz!) and the other Axis Cultists calling Megumin “lolicious”, though. (Well, Megumin is considered “cute and funny”… If you know the meme, you know.) That said, Cecily was fun to watch.

Also loved the foreshadowing with Wiz (previous episode), Hans (cameo at the end of this episode, plus a call-forward to the plot hijinks of KonoSuba season 2’s second half), and a flashback appearance by the voluptuous Sena. (Charisma break + Damegami-like crying face? Delicious.)

Poor Arnes though. (Reminded me of Sentouin, Hakenshimasu‘s Heine, too.)
