The first episode of a new sci-fi series means exposition, but Heavy Object manages to make the process painless, and even fun at times. Combined with big-ass war machines, some lovable rascals, and maybe even some flirting, it’s a solid start.

I find myself terribly conflicted about this series. I think I enjoyed it … but then why did I always have to force myself to watch the next episode? It could be that I liked the idea of Overlord more than the reality of it. For all its strengths and interesting ideas, there was always one thing missing: It wasn’t compelling.

GATCHAMAN Crowds Insight may be the smartest stupid anime this season. For the first half of the season I thought it was bonkers, though I didn’t hate it—until I realized that the themes it was playing with are vital to our modern world. Watching it may make you a more moral human being.
