Everything stays light and funny as we get our first taste of combat.
Think Positive
One of the things that differentiates this show from so many others – and it’s also one of the reasons I enjoy it so much – is that the characters don’t take everything too seriously. Things can get serious from time to time – such as when Rin, Illya, and Ruby were bracing for Rider’s attack – but in general, even when things are going badly the characters don’t despair. They think positively and keep it lighthearted! In a world with so many “serious”, emo-laden stories, this is a nice and refreshing change of pace.
Not that thinking positively always works out for them. Probably my favorite gag of the episode was when Illya found the love letter in her shoe box, and she and Ruby started freaking out–only for it to turn out to be from Rin, hah! Say what you will about Ruby’s trolling – and she’s good at it, hng~ – Rin got a good one in there. Illya’s hopes and dreams, crushed. Zetsuboushita!
Comedy In Combat
This episode we got our first real taste of combat in Prisma Illya with the battle against the Rider card. (Medusa version, not the Iskander one. Good thing too, or this anime would have ended on the second episode as everyone lost in the manliest way possible.) I have always called it very Nanoha-like, and now you see why – nukes, nukes, and more nukes! Real magical girls don’t screw around, they blast the @%(& out of their enemies.
Better than that though was the comedy in combat. It’s like I said before – they keep it lighthearted and funny most of the time, and only get serious after they’ve had plenty of fun. But they did get serious – despite the jokes, Rider’s attack would have been very dangerous, especially to Rin, since she doesn’t have Ruby’s hax abilities anymore. Luckily, Rider didn’t get the chance. That’s what you get for the long casting time, card!
Looking Ahead – A Wild Miyu Appears!
We only got a taste of our deuteragonist Miyu (Nazuka Kaori) this time, but next week we’ll get to know her better. More Miyu, Luvia, & Sapphire in our lives? Nothing could be better!

Random thoughts:
- Kadowaki Mai is talking about the tarot cards here too? I hope this doesn’t become her thing. Unless it means more Prisma Illya, in which case I’m all for it, woo!
- Y-You used your weapon correctly Illya-chan, now stop before my heart gives–hurk! *dies of moe*
- I wonder what’s more dangerous, a young girl going out at midnight in a short skirt, or one going to see Rin? Definitely the latter.
- Is that some older Waver? You need to go outside and eat more, son. What would Broskander say if he saw you looking so fragile and weak?
- Embarrassed magical girl Illya is so moe~
- This is just an aside, but this show is like creative crack to me. Just the Nanoha-style action alone makes me want to go write 10,000 words right now. Hmmm, perhaps I shall…

And I’m amazed that they actually got the original VA for Rider to do a few grunts and yells here and there. Silver Link is really going all out for this show eh?
Most likely if Broskander could take one look at him and said: Waver today we begin your trainig! You need some muscle and resistance to help your king conquer the world!. Yeah, I can defenitely see him saying that with a huge grim on his face, god I miss that guy.

How could he sound familiar with a different seiyuu and a total different personality?
It’s actually the same voice actor, Namikawa Daisuke, doing his best “evil magician” impression. About the personality… Well, there’s a good chance this Lord El-Melloi II never met Rider, and who knows how he would’ve turned out without him?
He goes by the name Lord El-Melloi II now.
And to think we were watching him fight together with Broskander last year. They grow up so fast.
If there’s one thing Japanese anime is really good at, it’s the ability to retain the same VA for a certain role for many years without having to worry about contractual problems due to said actor’s ego, unlike TV Series in the west. (It may or may not have something to do with VAs allegedly getting underpaid there, but that’s another debate altogether. )
The only time a character ever switches voice would be due to the VA retiring due mostly to old age and death. That’s why you’ll still get Asakawa Yuu as Rider after all these years, and Namikawa Daisuke gets to play a badass grown-up Waver.
I kinda thought it was like a Lone Ranger thing;

Waver has no time for training, he’s too busy playing Rider’s favorite videogames in his pastime.
So Stilts, basically Illya-chan is moe no matter what she does, right?.

With the “magic” she was taught, her moe is on an insanely high level.
I..must resist cuteness. GOD, I WANT TO HUG HER SO BADLY.
On the side note, is it is kind of sad that Ilya went to the toilet to transform, we didn’t get to see more of her cuteness.

A little bit of nitpicking, but if I remember correctly in the manga when Rider was about to use her noble phantasm, Rin yelled at Illya to run because there’s no way they could block Rider’s noble phantasm . But overall yet another ‘hnng!’ episode. At this rate I think I’ll collapse from Illya’s moeness

That said, Ilya still retained a certain sense of decency to realize she was doing something extreme silly and embarrassing. So good work Ruby, you have trolled her well.
Oh, and who have ever seen a Mahou Shoujo so embarrassed with transforming that she had to go do it in the bathroom? XD

BTW, anyone notice those little red “eyes” on Ruby’s sides resembled QB’s eyes a lot? Magical trolling sidekicks do have some things in common after all.

I loved it when Illya disappeared into the toilet to do her transformation. Complete with sfx and music coming from the window.
I wonder what would have been if we put this Ilya in-place of the 20+ year old Ilya in the original FSN? Instead of a vengeful soul, we get a diminutive childish magician who is looking for her rumored step brother.
And she transforms like in this series.

Off traveling, off course. Illya explained that her parents were often away doing Very Important Things™ that they don’t tell her about.
I dont wanna say, that this “alternative” Storyline and so, are bad. But i just wonder if there are more then this “heavy sugar” Moe

They really are going to make Illya the trollchew-toy! I was worried they might tone it down in comparison to the manga, but nope. They aren’t! Mwahahahaha~! This is awesome!
Woah woah woah… Stilts, maybe not so many spoilers about servants/cards identities? We don’t even find out about rider until 4/5ths of the way through the entire Fate/Stay Night VN. And that one was a pretty surprising one too.
I think if you’re not familiar enough about Fate/stay night or Fate/Zero to know the identities of the servants, you’re liable to get spoiled. There’s a statute of limitation on those kinds of things. Though usually saying their true names won’t be necessary, so maybe you’ll be okay?
Or, just go watch (or play) Fate/stay night. Consider that your homework.
Completely agree! Everyone should read the Fate/Stay Night visual novel… But with Ufotable remaking Fate/Stay Night around the corner, I think that we should just be a little more careful.
We still don’t know whether it’s a remake or new series?
No word except people going to see the Kara no Kyoukai release. They said that it looked like the preview contained scenes that could be in all the three routes.
